I totally didn't jump! All I said was "what was that" which is a totally normal reaction to hearing a super creepy noise in a super creepy basement.
~ Sam to Josh.
I've seen what's down there... and I'd give anything to unsee it.
~ Sam explaining her traumatic experience to the reporters.

Samantha "Sam" Giddings is one of the eight main protagonists and the overall main protagonist of Supermassive Games' Until Dawn, an interactive drama and horror video game that was released in 2015.

She is the best friend of Mike, Josh, Emily, Ashley, Chris, Matt, Jessica, Hannah, and Beth. She is described as warm and nature-loving, and wants to put the past behind her and reunite with her friends at the Washington lodge.

Sam is voiced and motion-captured by Hayden Panettiere, who also portrays Claire Bennet in Heroes, Channing Walsh in Racing Stripes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville and voices Dot in A Bug's Life, Fairy Princess Willow in Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King, Red Puckett in Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Suri in Dinosaur.

Personality[]

Out of every character in the game, Sam seems to be the most sympathetic as she often displays empathy towards her friends and is the only one who willingly didn't take part in the prank on Hannah. Her dream job is to be a conservationist given her love of animals, as seen in chapter 1 where she feeds an acorn to a squirrel. Sam is easily the friendliest person in the group and is rarely the course of drama, though her personality becomes a bit more hardened and stoic as the night goes on seen as she acts slightly aggressive towards the reporters and calls Mike blowing the asylum a "smooth move"

Background[]

Samantha "Sam" Giddings was high school friends with Chris Hartley, Ashley Brown, Emily Davis, Mike Munroe, Jessica Riley, Matt Taylor, and Josh, Hannah, and Beth Washington. She was known as being nature-loving and warm, and was best friends with both Hannah and Beth.

Until Dawn[]

Prologue (One Year Ago): The Prank[]

One year at the Washington lodge, Sam discourages Jessica, Emily, Ashley, Matt, and Mike into pranking Hannah, and heads upstairs to not be a part of it. It's possible that she attempted to warn Hannah, but reached her too late as Hannah runs into the woods without listening. As Beth runs to get her sister, Sam tells Mike to not pursue them because of the prank, stating that he would be the last person she wants to see. Sam's reaction to Hannah and Beth's disappearance is unknown, but it's assumed that she was upset about the incident, causing a rift within the group.

Chapter 1: Friendship / Memento Mori[]

After the incident at the Washington Lodge, Josh invited his friends (including Sam) to spend the weekend with him at the lodge. When Sam arrives, she discovers that the gate isn't working. After climbing over the gate and reaching the cable car station, she discovers Chris' phone. Depending on the player's choices, Sam can either invade Chris's privacy and see what the message Ashley left for him, resulting in a relationship decrease with Chris, or she can respect his privacy, resulting in a relationship increase with Chris.

While Chris is practicing at the shooting range, a squirrel makes an appearance. If Chris chooses to shoot the squirrel, Sam reacts in horror (because of her love of animals) resulting in both a relationship decrease and a bird scratching at Sam's face. Otherwise, if he doesn't shoot the squirrel, Sam's relationship with Chris increases. Afterwards, Chris tells Sam how he and Josh met during primary school in the cable car ride up the mountain.

After Chris steal's Jessica's letter from Mike, Chris could mention Sam doing something similar if she chose to snoop on Chris' privacy earlier in the chapter. If Jess chooses to tell the truth regarding how Mike and Emily broke up, Jess' relationship with Sam decreases but increases with Chris. If Jess insists on getting her letter back, Jess' relationship with Sam increases but decreases with Chris.

Chapter 2: Darkness / Jealousy[]

Sam spends the first quarter of chapter two outside of the Lodge Estate with Ashley waiting for Chris to find something to unlock the frozen door. When Chris talks to Sam before he enters the Washington Lodge, she's shown to be aware of Chris' crush on Ashley.

Later in the chapter, when Sam is taking a bath, she realizes that there isn't any hot water in the tub. Josh takes Sam down to the basement so that he they can turn the hot water on. He also mentions that he gave Chris and Ashley a mission alone and Sam can mention say that Chris and Ashley are sweet together or that Chris needs to make a move on Ashley already.

During their search in the basement, Sam can find a baseball bat which she learns from Josh that the bat has some history with his family. When there's a noise in the basement after the hot water turns on, Sam can either check it out alone or can search together with Josh. They discover an unknown mask man who chases them out of the basement. It turns out Chris wanted to play a prank on them. After the shenanigans that took place, Sam goes off to take her bath while Ashley, Chris, and Josh play with the ouija board.

Chapter 5: Dread / Prey[]

While Sam is spending time in the bath, "The Psycho" is spying on her. Hearing a noise, Sam follows the balloons into the amphitheatre where "the psycho" plays a video of Josh's death.

The remainder of Chapter 5 is a chase where Sam has to escape the killer. How well Sam hides at the end of the chase will determine whether Chris and Ashley find her unconscious at the end of the Chapter 6. If Sam showed Josh the baseball bat in Chapter 2, she can use it to defend against 'the psycho" if he finds her. If Chris shoots at the squirrel on the shooting range in Chapter 1 resulting in Sam getting attacked by a bird, "the psycho" follows the blood trail resulting in Sam's capture no matter if she hides under the elevator or runs towards the hallway.

Chapter 6: Psychosis / Vengeance[]

After Sam's disappearance, Chris and Ashley search the Washington Lodge for her. Depending on how well Sam hid from "the psycho" determines whether Chris and Ashley find her. If Sam got caught, Chris and Ashley find her lying unconscious captured by "the psycho". If Sam managed to evade "the psycho", Chris and Ashley will instead find a dummy wearing Sam's clothes. Depending on what you choose in your therapy sessions with Dr. Hill, the dummy will either be a clown, scarecrow or zombie.

Chapter 7: Loss / Violence[]

The start of chapter 7 depends on whether Sam was captured or not. If Sam was captured, Mike rescues her by using either a lighter or the machete he found in the sanatorium. If Sam avoided capture, she investigates the "psycho's" lair discovery a few more clues about who he is before she finds Mike. When they enter the "psycho's" torture chamber, the "psycho" reveals that he was Josh the entire time. Josh explains to the group how he planned the entire weekend. If Sam found the clues in Josh's workshop, she'll explain how it's obvious as to why he was doing this and that it was a cry for help. If Sam didn't find the clues, Chris explains that Josh is off his meds.

Chapter 8: Animus / Revelation[]

If Emily ends up surviving the her encounter with the Wendigos, Sam and Ashley are both seen comforting her. Later on, if Ashley discovers the bite mark on Emily's shoulder, Sam is the only one in the safe room who defends Emily. After Mike leaves to find Josh, Ashley reads through the book learning that the Wendigo bites aren't infectious. Sam defends Ashley when Emily confronts her saying that she was scared. If Emily didn't die in the mines or if Mike didn't shoot Emily. Sam then leads everyone in the safe room to find Mike realizing that he's still in danger. If Mike does shoot Emily Sam's relationship with him will reduced to zero but upon hearing how dangerous the Wendigos are from The Strangers book Sam convinces the others they need to go after him.

Chapter 9: Despair / Karma[]

Sam leads the group down into the mine shaft to find Mike. Upon reaching a steep climb, Sam tells the others to return to the lodge. Depending whether Ashley opened the trapdoor or not and whether Chris and Emily are still alive, they will comment about this. If Mike blew up the Sanatorium earlier in the chapter, Sam rescues Mike by defeating the Wendigo using either a shovel or a pipe in the mines. If Mike didn't blow up the Sanatorium, Sam follows the path to the Sanatorium and regroups with Mike where she saves him by using a shovel or a pipe. He then proceeds to blow up the Sanatorium. The two of them resume their search for Josh.

Chapter 10: Repentance / Resolution[]

Sam and Mike continue their search for Josh. If Sam ends up finding Hannah's diary, she'll inform Josh that Hannah ended up surviving. This information determines whether Josh gets captured by Hannah or whether Josh ends up dying. After climbing out of the mines, Sam rushes back to the Washington Lodge. Because the sanatorium got destroyed in Chapter 9, the Wendigos managed to get into the lodge. Taking control of Sam, the quick time event determines who lives and who dies, Sam included. If Sam rushes to the light switch way too early, she ends up killing both Mike and anyone else still in the Washington Lodge. If Sam moves two, a Wendigo impales her in the stomach before Mike sets the Washington Lodge on fire. If Sam rescued Mike, hid from the Wendigos, and didn't move when told not to, Sam, Mike, and whoever is still alive manage to escape the lodge.
