What are your thoughts on Into the Badlands?

I do not see a lot of talk about this show here, or anywhere else. But to me it was one of the coolest shows to watch. I loved the setting, the costumes, the wire-fu, the story. It was very interesting and satisfying to watch.

It got canceled as pretty much anything does these days, but ever since I have been searching for something to fill the need for that kind of a show.

What are your thoughts on this show? Did you like it? Was it canceled justly?

Really good first season.

It kinda fell apart after that.

It felt like they were just winging it from Season 2.

And the writers have a pet favorite character. This character was ok in Season 1 but starting from season 2 the writers were using every possible opportunity to show everyone what a badass they were and this annoyed me so much.

Also, it's a shame what they did to MK. One of the worst cases of character assassination ever.

I hated MK’s acting so so so much.

Good thing i stopped when whatshisname was captured or whatever. I really started hating on the vibe

We never got to see Sonny go Super Saiyan and it still bothers me.

Martial arts were fantastic. Worldbuilding was fantastic. Use of color for the show was fantastic. The ideas in the show were unique. Unfortunately, the acting outside of a handful of the adult actors was OK at best and the overall plot/writing was not all that great (except the first season). it did propel Daniel Wu forward in Hollywood, which I was super happy with. he's great.

Man the writing and acting may have not been super great but I highly enjoyed the storyline with Pilgrim. I think they did a fine job with the overall direction but felt like Sonny should have had an ultimate arc in the story with him changing over to defeat Pilgrim but then ultimately being taken down by MK in a plead to end his life. The show is a guilty pleasure of mine. I will rewatch it one day.

It starts fantastic and trails off. I don't think it was supported as it deserved, after a terrific season 1. The story was cool, the action was exciting and it had a unique look. Definitely worth watching.

Was a fan of the first season, they did really great with the story and characters. If you liked this show check out Warrior on HBO

Sonny's bike was a thing of beauty. Was one of my favorites as far as addicting shows and I'm an old school kung-fu movie fan so it was right up my alley.

Amazing first season. The baron was such a terrific villain... Who absolutely should not have returned.

Even though the second and third season sucked the choreography was still top notch. Just a shame they didn't really seem to have a vision beyond season 1.

I remember liking it. I think it just got overshadowed and underfunded when AMC decided to go all in on TWD.

I enjoy it, something fun to watch that does not take itself too seriously, interesting world, Marton Csokas always brings it, Emily Beecham is great as the Widow, plus all the over-the-top martial arts, it's a little bit silly but also entertaining.

Great series....

Too many folks don't take it for what it is.....entertainment.

Wife and I have watched entire series twice.....

Great late night entertainment.....

Its now 2023.....nothing anywhere on network or cable even close....

Throw away the cork sniffer persona's and let yourself be entertained....

I loved it and was sad that it got canceled. It went a little off the rails in season three, but overall it was consistently interesting and well done. I wish there were more shows like it.

I love this show. Constant rewatches. I am all about The Widow and how kickass she is. Sunny was so cool to watch. Special badass shout-out to the dude with the metal hand. Nick Frost was effing hilarious. Who knew Lorraine Toussaint could fight? It was great all around. Hate they canceled it, but on Pluto they play it pretty much daily.

Minerva is the best character, she's so good I don't hate the name Minerva anymore, which I did for as long as I could remember.

I called it "The Bloody Blade Ballet" - it was very much my introduction to wuxia. Some of the setting stretched credibility at times, but there were some great characters.

Emily Beecham, who played the Widow, is now in 1899 on Netflix.

Emily Beecham 😍

One my all time favorite shows. Best fight scenes I've ever seen on a TV show. Fantastic show that never got pushed by AMC because there were no zombies in it.

Lewis Tan was a great addition late in the game.

Southern gothic-kung fu-dieselpunk-fantasy; It's one of the greatest ideas anyone has ever had, at least for two seasons.

They killed off Quinn, then brought him back, but he was so damn good it was worth it, then when he was gone, they took the surprisingly sympathetic Minerva and made her the villain, which was, IMO, a huge mistake.

I thought Sunny and MK were the worst actors, sidelining their stories in season 2 was a great idea. I'm happy to see MK got a little better at acting in Ms Marvel. BHAJI! Nick Frost being a kung-fu master makes me insanely happy.

They had a really cool mobile game, too, but I hit the wall where they expect you to start paying to progress and I backed off.

Don't SKULK in the SHAdows. If yer here to kill me have the decency to show your faces.

-Quinn. The best delivery of any line ever.

If you want a recommendation for something equally weird, Try Dean F Wilson's Coilhunter Chronicles and Great Iron War audiobooks, read by RC Bray, and CD Espeseth's Visions, read by Rhys David. The narrations of both are amazing, and they are fun, weird genre mashups.

Emily Beecham played my favourite character. She absolutely shone in the role of The Widow, the physicality, the attitude, the fashion!

I will now watch anything she's in, including 1899.

The first season was amazing. It became one of my favorite shows immediately. I was super excited to learn that that the second and subsequent seasons would have higher production, better fight scenes, etc. However, the rest of the seasons after the first were terrible. I kept trying, and when they added Nick Frost, it just got worse. So much worse

So much wasted potential.

u/abbzug avatar

Just couldn't get into it. It seemed too silly.

I heard endless praise for its fight scenes and choreography, so I very excitedly picked it up. Never quite understood that hype, as it just seemed to be largely fast cuts and camera tricks? Maybe I didn't get far enough in, because "TV series with excellent martial arts choreography" is generally number one on my wish list at any given time.

The setting was pretty cool though.

I enjoyed it for many of the same reasons you've pointed out. It had a unique look, and the action was exciting. I think that the story got too convoluted towards the end of the third season.

u/entropy413 avatar

I also liked it. It had totally bats#*t energy and I was here for it! I would say His Dark Materials gives me similar vibes but minus the wire-fu.

u/fdbryant3 avatar

I loved it and really wish it got season to properly close things out.

u/VentusHermetis avatar

I gave up on it when the easy assassination of that black leader was fucked up.

I thought the premise was interesting and was enjoying what I saw. But, they sandwiched it between Walking and Talking Dead, so when that franchise took a severe nose dive, I basically stayed off of AMC, so never really saw beyond the first season.

Phenomenal all around, never read the source. I also didn't think it was cancelled, just ended?

u/CleverZerg avatar

If the writing and some of the acting was half as good as the action that show would've been truly great.

I like the premise more than the show itself. A lot of cool ideas and visuals but it was just kind of...mediocre? I feel the same about a lot of AMC shows - Into the Badlands, Hell on Wheels, Dark Winds. All had/have potential but there's something corny about them that I don't really enjoy.

It would've been a really good show if it had good to great acting. Season 1 was cool but then MK's terrible acting became unbearable in season 2 and I had to stop.

It was enjoyable but forgettable

u/riverboats avatar

It's in my mind every time I see a 100s of million dollar budget movies do fight scenes with shaky cam, quick cuts, pitch dark and high zoom to hide the zero work they put into the scene.

I always think Badlands did it weekly with much less budget and time. Love to see a revisit of that world.

The show is betrayal, backstab, betrayal, plot twist, backstab, betrayal, betrayal, betrayal, backstab, plot twist. It’s exhausting to follow, the writing sucks, and the choreography made laugh multiple times. Like when Bajie does some random flat ground flip in the middle of fighting.

Just finished it. Truly hope we get a 4th season someday.

u/SofiaC_123 avatar

Loved season one, but by season three I lost interest. Its a shame it got canceled. Despite its flaws I was really looking forward to the next season.
