'Free Agents' Cancelled, Other TV Shows at Risk
NEW YORK (
) -- We called it.
Free Agents
has become the second NBC series to be cancelled this week.
The network pulled the plug on the remake of the British comedy of the same name, just days after it gave the axe to
The Playboy Club
.
Neither of the cancellations should come as a surprise, with
The Playboy Club
seeing just 3.8 million viewers in its second week, a 19% drop from its premiere, and
Free Agents
drawing just 3.1 million viewers last week for a 1.0 rating.
The star of
Free Agents
, Hank Azaria, practically begged people via Twitter to watch the show on Wednesday night. He tweeted: "Okay, it's do or die time for my show Free Agents -- we need eyeballs tonight at 8:30 on NBC!! Watch tonight or we may go away."
This makes
Comcast's
(CMCSA)
NBC the first network to pull the plug on a new series. The network has been in fourth place so far this fall, a spot it has held for the past six seasons. And it doesn't look like
The Playboy Club
is the only new show from NBC on death row, with at least three other series at risk of being cancelled.
But at the very least, NBC has an ace up its sleeve with the mid-season premiere of
Smash
, the musical drama starring
American Idol
alum Katharine McPhee and Debra Messing.
NBC also gave two other comedies,
Whitney
and
Up All Night
full seasons.
Typically, networks are hesitant to pull shows this early in the season, as it sets bad precedent and often results in more mediocre material that doesn't boost ratings. But now that NBC has made the first move, the gate is now open for other networks.
ABC's
Charlie's Angels
and CBS'
How to be a Gentleman
also appear to be on death watch.
