The extraordinary story of the rise and fall and rise again of Tyson Fury...

THE GYPSY KING.

A Manchester lad from Irish Traveller stock, born three months premature and weighing just a pound at birth, Tyson (named after his father's boxing hero) grew up to become one of the most unlikely heavyweight champions in history. This 'dream come true' soon turned to nightmare, however, as alcohol and cocaine abuse took hold and Tyson was stripped of his titles. What followed was the darkest moment of his life - detailed in this book for the first time - in which he came within seconds of ending everything.

THE PEOPLE'S CHAMPION.

Like all the greatest stories, though, there is redemption and Tyson defies all the odds and literally drags himself to his feet. 10 million people around the globe watched Fury fight Wilder in the biggest fight of the boxing calendar. Speaking candidly about his struggles with mental health, this is Tyson Fury as you have never seen him before.

A BRITISH ICON.

About the Author

Tyson Fury is the undefeated lineal heavyweight champion of the world. Born and raised in Manchester, Fury weighed just 1lb at birth after being born three months premature. His father John named him after Mike Tyson.

From Irish traveller heritage, the "Gypsy King" is undefeated in 28 professional fights, winning 27 with 19 knockouts, and drawing once. His most famous victory came in 2015, when he stunned longtime champion Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles. He was forced to vacate the belts because of issues with drugs, alcohol and his mental health, and did not fight again for more than two years. Most thought he was done with boxing forever. Until an amazing comeback fight with Deontay Wilder in December 2018. It was an instant classic, ending in a split decision tie.Tyson was victorious in the second fight against Deontay Wilder in February 2020, defeating his opponent by seventh-round technical knockout. In October 2021, Tyson concluded the trilogy with victory against Deontay Wilder by an emphatic eleventh-round technical knockout.

Outside of the ring, Tyson Fury is a mental health ambassador.

Excellent, moving and inspiring book. This shows great courage to openly talk about his struggles and gives hope to others.

No, Tyson Fury isn't a great writer, but he is a thoughtful, intelligent and complex man who is not afraid to bare his soul to the whole world. And he bares his soul clearly not to make money (he has a shed load from boxing), but to help people.
Before reading the book I didn't much care for Tyson Fury as a fighter or as a man. I saw him as the loud mouthed arrogant fat gypsy who somehow managed to beat fighters who looked in better condition and had better pedigrees. Boy, was I wrong. Not only is he a superb technical boxer (I've since re-watched many of his fights), he is also a great ambassador for the sport but also a champion for mental health issues.
His battle with anxiety and depression is the thread that ties his story together. It interweaves his whole life and will remain with him until the day he dies; he acknowledges that many times. It has shaped him and at one point nearly killed him. By the end of the story I began to see Tyson Fury as a humble, complex, driven human being, a great family man who believed so deeply in his destiny to become the world heavyweight champion of the world, that nothing (not even depression) was going to stand in his way.
Don't believe the hype; don't listen to the trolls and the ignorant; don't judge him for what you think you might know; hear it from the man himself, the Gypsy King.

This is an excellent read and insight into the life of a boxer and so so who suffered from mental health issues which is not something that was obvious when Fury was boxing

At truly great book. I always make how good an autobiography is if I feel I become a bigger fan of the person after I finished the book, than I was when I started the book. In the case of this book I was that was done by the time I finished the introduction.

Tyson Fury is a great boxer and a even greater person. When reading an autobiography it becomes obvious very quickly if the book has been ghost written or the author is being less than honest. Tyson is honest about all his faults and successes. His highs and lows.

Whether you like him or not you will have heard of Tyson Fury. This book is about the obstacles he has faced in the ring, backroom politics and much more importantly in life. Tyson's openness about his mental health issues and his overcoming them is inspiration, but what he tries to tell everyone is there is no magic cure it is an ongoing daily struggle. He does not come across as some to a admired from a far on his much he has accomplished, but someone leading the way for others.

The goes onto Tyson's family life, his beliefs, his failures, his successes and his will to keep in fighting. The best and most use manifestation of this is his seeming return from the dead raise in the 12th round against arguably the hardest hitter currently in the heavyweight division.

This is a great story with hopefully much more to come. Tyson Fury has a great ability to reach people and inspire them. There is plenty about boxing, but what a lot of people do not realise the mental discipline needed to become a success as well as not to become a victim of the success as well. Tyson has many oars in the water currently. 2020 looks like a big year for him whichever direction he decides to go. If you want the story so far get this book.

Suffering with mental health issues myself, Fury hits the nail on the head with how he describes it. That sensation of not feeling good enough for anyone or anything, not motivated to do anything, feeling constantly down for no reason, self medicating with alcohol and drugs to escape reality. And even the slightest things can make these negatige thoughts worse.

By chance, you manage to come to the realisation that things must change. You go at war with yourself; it's mentally exhausting. You feel it would be easier to sleep and never wake up. You don't care about yourself and it hurts your family, and that just makes you feel worse as you feel helpless.

So how do you escape this rut? This is how Fury does it: Stick to a routine each day; stick to a physical training routine; keep your mind occupied; talk to someone as soon as you start to feel down; appreciate all the time you spend with your family; cut out negative influences or triggers; don't take life too seriously; give yourself a sense purpose; be kind to yourself and celebrate even the smallest achievements. Obviously this is easier said then done, a lot more work needs to be done regarding supporting those with mental health, Fury is a pioneer in this, supporting men the world over by showing that it is ok to have these sorts of discussions.

I've recently graduated in Psychology. From Fury's description, it's clear he condition is serious, and I mean SERIOUS. He's doing well now, but he could regress at anytime. It's clear he is constantly running away and hiding from his demons. It never goes away completely.

Looking forward to his fight with Joshuha, two great champs in the ring. Fury is on a whole different level tho.

100% the people champ!

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring life journey of 'The Gypsy King'
Reviewed in India on 13 February 2022
Inspite of Tyson Fury (do read the book to know why he is called the Gypsy King) being such a big figure in the boxing world, I came across him recently when I was looking for videos on people who have overcame depression. There he was interviewing with Joe Rogan and for some reason, his story touched a chord and I had to know the whole story. The book was totally what i thought it would be, the story of a champion and his battle in the ring and outside the ring( with his own mind). It gives a sneak peak into the man behind the mask which Tyson adorned for the entertainment of the public and which he had started believing in leading to his depression.

Named after the legendary Mike Tyson, Tyson Fury's story is inspiring and worth a read for anyone going through a difficult phase in life. If someone like him who was at the top of his game can go through depression, it can happen to anyone. But its also important to see from Tyson's story that there is always a way out of depression. Just seek professional help!
