- Moosa Lane review – loving cinematic bridge between two countries and culturesby Phuong Le on 27. maj 2024 at 12:00
Shot over 15 years between Denmark and Pakistan, the film-maker captures day-to-day life in Karachi, and explores how freedom and human rights are not doled out equallyShot over the course of 15 years, Anita Mathal Hopland’s documentary provides a cinematic bridge between two countries. Born in Denmark to a Norwegian mother and a Pakistani father, the director lived in Copenhagen yet found herself unmoored between cultures. Camera in hand, Hopland makes several trips to Moosa Lane, the street in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, where 25 members of her father’s family share a single dwelling. Through her lens, she lovingly documents the colourful day-to-day lives of her relatives. In the face of diasporic longing, the act of filming embodies a desire to connect and set roots in a world divided by borders.Focusing on three of her family members, Hopland’s film also observes changing cultural attitudes among Pakistani youths. Readying herself for an arranged marriage, Hopland’s niece Saima is content to follow tradition. Meanwhile, Alishba, who was only two years old when shooting started, has grown into a spirited teen who dreams of pursuing financial and professional independence. A ball of energy, Alishba approaches the dangerous streets and the beautiful open beaches with the same zest for adventure. As Hopland’s camera zigzags between Karachi and Denmark, the montage articulates how the idea of free movement is reserved only for the privileged. Her journeys to Pakistan had always been one-sided, as it was nearly impossible for her relatives to travel to Europe, for economic and visa reasons. Continue reading…

- The Denmark secret: how it became the world’s most trusting country – and why that mattersby Zoe Williams on 22. maj 2024 at 9:00
There are real benefits to a society where people feel safe enough to leave their babies and bikes on the street. How have the Danes achieved this level of faith in their fellow citizens?Over the years, Denmark has emerged as the good faith capital of the world. Nearly 74% of Danes believe “most people can be trusted” – more than any other nationality. On wider metrics, such as social trust (trusting a stranger) and civic trust (trusting authority), Denmark also scores highest in the world, with the other Nordic countries close behind. The political scientist Gert Tinggaard Svendsen argues that trust accounts for 25% of Denmark’s otherwise inexplicable wealth. By his reckoning, a quarter of that wealth comes from physical capital (means of production and infrastructure), half comes from human capital (the population’s level of education and innovation), and the unexplained final quarter is trust: they don’t sue one another, they don’t waste money on burglar alarms, businesses often make binding verbal agreements without sweating the contract. People who hold power in Danish institutions – the government, police, judiciary, health services – are trusted to be acting in society’s best interests, and there is very little corruption. - The Girl With the Needle review – horrific drama based on Denmark’s 1921 baby-killer caseby Peter Bradshaw on 16. maj 2024 at 10:10
Cannes film festival Loosely based on fact, Magnus van Horn’s fictionalised true crime nightmare leaves you with a shiver of pure fearJust in case you were thinking that this is an upbeat story of a sweet young seamstress winning BBC TV’s The Great British Sewing Bee, the needle in question is in fact a knitting needle for giving yourself an abortion in a public bath-house in post-first world war Copenhagen. This film from Poland-based Swedish director Magnus van Horn – making his Cannes competition debut – is a macabre and hypnotic horror, a fictionalised true crime nightmare based on Denmark’s baby-killer case from 1921, shot in high-contrast expressionist monochrome and kept at an almost unbearable pitch of anxiety by Frederikke Hoffmeier’s nerve-abrading musical score.I was unconvinced by Van Horn’s previous film, the social media satire Sweat, but this new one is horribly effective grand guignol, made with enormous technical flair, like Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd without the bleak humour – there are touches of Lynch, Von Trier or even Tod Browning here. It is about a world in which women’s lives are disposable and in which the authorities are disapproving of and disgusted by their suffering – and set at a time in which the first world war had normalised the idea of mass murder. I actually found myself thinking of something further back to the Malthusian suicides in Hardy’s Jude the Obscure: “Done because we are too many.” Continue reading…
- Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever review – Danish morgue sequel returns from the deadby Leslie Felperin on 14. maj 2024 at 12:00
Ole Bornedal follows up his 90s suspense thriller Nightwatch and goes back to the same creepy buildingThirty years ago, just before the Dogme 95 movement raised the profile of Danish film-making, Ole Bornedal’s suspense thriller Nightwatch was what success for the country’s cinema looked like. Basically a modest but moderately clever genre exercise, it starred a young chiselled-cheeked Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, later cast as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, as a student called Martin who gets a job as a nightwatchman at a municipal building that contains a morgue. Partly because of a dare by his reckless buddy Jens (Kim Bodnia, of Pusher and later Killing Eve fame), Martin ends up becoming a suspect in that most 1990s of cinematic plot devices, a string of murders of sex workers by a serial killer. The last act is all WTF-twists, blue-hued lighting and stabby strings on the soundtrack, but the cast, which also includes the always-great Sofie Grabol as Martin’s girlfriend Kalinka, makes it very watchable.Bornedal went on to make a forgettable US remake starring Ewan McGregor but is now back with this sequel for a new generation, appropriately starring a new crop of good-looking Danish actors including the director’s own daughter Fanny Leander Bornedal. She plays Emma, the medical-student daughter of Martin and Kalinka from the first film; sadly, Grabol only appears in a photograph as her character has been killed off before the action begins. With single-dad Martin still a bit of a post-traumatic mess after the events in the first film, Emma decides to take a part-time job as a nightwatch worker in precisely the same creepy building. And wouldn’t you know it, someone is killing women and scalping them just like the murderer (Ulf Pilgaard) did back in the day – only it can’t be him because he’s blind now and locked up in an asylum for the criminally insane. In between shifts, and occasional hook-ups with her sort-of boyfriend Frederik (Alex Høgh Andersen), Emma takes to investigating who might be committing the murders, with incorrect conclusions obviously leading to near-fatal consequences. - Appetising, delicious food served up to prisoners? It works for the Nordic countries | Lucy Vincentby Lucy Vincent on 7. maj 2024 at 11:00
Inmates cook together, eat together – and sometimes even forage together. It puts Britain’s rat-infested facilities to shameI spent three weeks visiting prisons across Scandinavia to find out how they feed their prisoners. You may ask why any of us should be concerned with what people in prison eat. But research suggests that good nutrition not only improves wellbeing, security and safety in prisons, it may have an effect on rehabilitation and keep people from returning to prison. So does a region with one of the lowest reoffending rates in the world – only about 30% of Nordic prisoners end up back inside within two years – and a humane approach to incarceration treat prison food differently from countries with higher recidivism and a more punitive culture? - The chilling policy to cut Greenland’s high birth rate – podcastby Presented by Helen Pidd, with Celine Klint and Bula Larsen; produced by Courtney Yusuf and Solomon King; executive producer Homa Khaleeli on 19. april 2024 at 2:00
In the 1960s the birthrate in Greenland was one of the highest in the world. Then it plunged. Decades later, women have finally begun speaking out about what happenedBula Larsen was 14 when one day she and her friends were told to go to the hospital. Bula lived in Greenland and was Inuit like most of the population of the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. At the hospital she and her friends lined up, and one-by-one were told to enter a room. Bula recalls how she was asked to sit on a bed with ‘cold metal stirrups’ where, to her shock, she was fitted with an IUD, a contraceptive coil she had never asked for or agreed to have.Today, more than 100 women are suing the Danish government for a policy of forced contraception. Payman Maadi brings a fierce intelligence to his portrayal of a refugee seeking a secure new home for his family in SwedenBennett Miller’s Foxcatcher from 2015 and Sean Durkin’s recent The Iron Claw show the sport of wrestling as deeply dysfunctional; wrestling fans might wonder if their favourite pastime is ever going to be depicted in the movies as vital and dramatic, like football, or even tragically noble and masculine, like boxing. Well … not in this film.Motståndaran, or Opponent, is a tense, complex drama from Iranian-born and Denmark-based director Milad Alami, drawing on some of his own experiences as a refugee in northern Sweden. Payman Maadi (from Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation) plays Imam, a grizzled Iranian wrestling champ seeking asylum in Sweden with his pregnant wife Maryam (Marall Nasiri) and their two young daughters.
