The music of Big Maybelle bridges great African American female singers from the early days of the recording industry to the giants who dominated the entire pop industry after her contributions like Aretha Franklin. She, along with Ruth Brown, Big Mama Thornton, and Lavern Baker recorded some of the most incredible, witty, soulfull passionate music but were largely unnoticed by the big audience since black singers were relegated to low powered stations that played "race" records.
There is so much to enjoy here not simply because she set the stage for artists who followed, but this is really cool music. This compilation is especially interesting capturing her recordings for the Okeh label, her work from 1952-1955, a time period when the music of the majority culture was stagnating in the doldrums leading right up to the dawn of rock n' roll and also the beginning of R&B starting to gather a broader audience. At a time when white female singers were singing sugary fluff like "How Much is That Doggy in the Business," Big Maybelle was providing fun, passionate, and soulful singing. Take "Gabbin' Blues (Don't Run My Business)" as an example, could mainstream pop ever present something so brutally honest that goes right for the throat? "My Country Man" sounds a lot like early rock n' roll only it's rougher and louder than what would be allowed in the mainstream until the mid 60's. "Way Back Home" is much closer to showing music that hooks up directly with the style of music that delighted millions when Aretha Franklin recorded songs like "Chain of Fools."
One of the most interesting songs on the album is "I'm Gettin' Long Alright" which presents a style of music that could be cleaned up and given pretty lyrics to gentler voices like Nancy Wilson, but it's hard to image such rough lyrics anywhere today outside of the blues. "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" harkens back to the early days of Ray Charles, but what a shame a wonderful song like this is largely burried in a historic context. It also boasts a sassy saxophone screaching to be heard.
While its historical role might draw listeners in, it's the gusty powerful music that will make this a most enjoyable album with loads of passionate, blues, joy!

I was only 3 years old when Maybelle was "singing for her supper"as a recording artist. I didn't start listening to music until I was 10 when my parents bought their first record player. Black American Blues was not on the menu. I started listening to the blues in the early 70's and have been educating myself ever since. Heard Big Maybelle for the 1st time here in Oz about 6 months ago while tuned in to pay tv/radio. Blew me away when I heard 4 the 1st time "Ginny Mule". Had to get one of her cds and fortunately clicked on her Okeh Sessions.
For those who are into the blues and want to own a bit of special history....not to mention an amazing "down and dirty", earthy "out there", honest artist putting it out there for the punters, buy
this offering. Billie Holliday eat your heart out. BM is better.

One of Big Maybelle's best complilations. If this is the 1st Big Maybelle cd you get, I am sure you will become a Big Maybelle fan and You most likely will want to keep collecting more. "The best of the Rojac Years" is also an excellent place to start. What a voice. One of the Greatest Blues Singers. No Doubt about it. Big Maybelle's early stuff is the best.

An almost forgotten singer from the era and genre of the better known Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. Also an insight into the roots of what would later become Rock and Roll in the hands of Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and Buddy Holly.

Maybelle was a great blues singer who always wanted to do pop ballads. I just wish this CD had included Candy. But the old blues took me back to high school days.

Big Maybelle could stand and shake the building with the growl in her voice, or she could sing light and charming and jumping hot. Not so rough as Big Mama Thornton, and a little less quirky than LaVern Baker. I love all these vocalists but Big Maybelle will live in history as the best. This album proves it.

Very good voice and good lyrics. I have a bias for the hard core blues singing women with tragic lives, such as Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thorton, Gertrude...

Great R&B From A Singer Whose Name And Work Are Not Very Well Known, But Should Be
Reviewed in Canada on December 9, 2014
I wasn't familiar with the name Big Maybelle or with her recordings until I came across her name while doing some music research.
I took a chance and ordered this CD as a relatively low cost introduction to Big Maybelle.
Great stuff. Big Maybelle had a great voice and Okeh Records gave her some first rate material to record, including a version of Whole Lot Of Shakin' Goin' On, which she recorded two years before Jerry Lee Lewis released his far better known cover on Sun Records in 1957.
This CD has 26 tracks, clocking in at just under 75 minutes total playing time, and the sound is good.
If you like classic R&B and you don't know about Big Maybelle, buy this and check her out. If you like classic R&B, you'll like this CD. I have no problem recommending this one.
After hearing this one, I'll be buying the Big Maybelle Complete Savoy Sessions CD, which covers her 1955-59 recordings.

Really great R&B music. The best starting point to get to know her. She's got a heck of a huge voice. She was huge. She desserves to be better known.
