Banyan tree is my go to place for travel to unfamiliar places. Beautiful scenery, excellent service, foreigner friendly (though a command in Chinese will help here).

Place is extremely beautiful grounds with crisp mountain air, lush greenery. Cute mini farm with goats, ducks, cute piglets. The spa is Banyan Tree standard - I went for a 90 minute custom therapy with Miki and she’s really good. Props also to the staff at the travel desk who gave excellent advice and Mingyue restaurant for packing our meals when we went out for trips; and took the railway back. Thanks for taking care of my elderly parents

On the note of senior friendliness, the property is built on undulating terrain so not all the places are wheelchair accessible. I ended up ordering room service which was just as good full menu

The heated pool is breathtaking too! And not cold when you get out.

Strongly recommend this place one of my faves so far

This base to explore this stunning location is impossible to beat. From the warm welcome to the great service, the team excelled and the range of facilities are excellent. Recommend visiting outside peak season and Chinese national holidays.

We are very happy with our decision to stay at Banyan Tree instead of the mountain top. The hotel is clean, well maintained and quiet, a great getaway from the crowds.

Breakfast spread is excellent and the food quality is consistently good throughout our stay. Would definitely choose Banyan Tree again if we ever revisit Huangshan.

We stayed here for 2 nights (end of Sept 2015) in the Lucun Suite, Mountain View - one night prior to our ascent of Mt Huangshan, upon which we stayed a night, and then one night having returned back from Mt Huangshan - and found both nights a fantastic experience. Whilst we were somewhat concerned about the previous reviews left in August mentioning teething issues, we were pleasantly surprised and noted there seems to be a definite improvement!

Location to/from key points:
Tunxi – main entry and exit point for travellers - 60 mins by taxi; ~Y200
Huangshan North – only station where you can catch the bullet train – 60-90 mins by taxi; ~Y200
Tangkyou – base of Mt Huangshan where you start - 45-60 mins by taxi; ~Y150-200
Hongcun (village) - 10-20 minute taxi ride – the UNESCO listed site where parts of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was filmed.
Xidi - 20-30 mins by taxi – the other UNESCO listed site.
Lucun (village) – a 5 minute walk. On a side note, of all three villages which we visited, if you were to do one village we’d recommend Lucun. It’s worth noting that the Hotel offers free entry and a free tour (this would probably otherwise set you back only a few Yen; Xidi and Hongcun were Y80-100 each, per person)

Room interior: The room was clean and the décor was absolutely fantastic. Very authentic detail from the design, sliding doors, to bathroom tub and bath robes! Walking in and being met by the waft of the Banyan scented oil was absolutely sensational! All the little details were looked after, and within the minibar there was an unusually, but pleasantly wide selection of complimentary soft drinks!

View: we enjoyed the fantastic view of the Lucun Mountains from the incredibly spacious balcony we had. If it hadn’t been raining, we’d certainly have been spending a lot more time taking in the incredible view!

Facilities: at the time of our stay the hotel facilities such as the gym/spa/sauna were yet to be opened, this was of little bother to me and my friend as we were shattered after Mt Huangshan, but clearly a point to note for the fitness freaks. As expected, the hotel will arrange any taxis for you, which you almost certainly will need to go anywhere given the remote location. There’s also a hotel buggy that will take you to/from places within the ‘resort’ whenever required.

Food: breakfast was a buffet with a wide choice ranging from freshly made omelettes/noodle, to the more continental options of bread/cheese/cereal/baked beans. Dinner was ok on the first night, as we struggled with the language barrier (no English speaking staff was present), and me being a vegetarian undoubtedly only increased the problem! On the second night however, we had a staff member who was able to understand our English and relay our somewhat custom choice - the result being an excellent meal!

Staff: as explained above, there is some difficulty with some staff members understanding and speaking English, HOWEVER the duty managers Brian, Castille and Jenny ensured we were well serviced. Whilst they didn't necessarily speak perfect English, we were always able to successfully communicate our requirements/instructions. They were all incredibly helpful, going out of their way to exchange money and book train tickets for us – this required them going into town to arrange. Our outward journey started at 6am, so Castille kindly organised a packed lunch which was a very nice touch aswell!

In summary, we had an incredible experience at Mt Huangshan, and the Banyan Tree’s remote location and authentic decor simply added to that! Special thanks go to Jenny, Castille Guo and Brian Guo, there was one other chap (wearing glasses) who helped translate our order when ordering dinner, I can’t for the life of me remember, but special thanks to him aswell for ensuring we had a fantastic stay!

Well no doubt, the property is absolutely stunning with gorgeous views of the mountains and superb accommodation. We stayed at the 2 Bedroom Lucun Villa and it had breathtaking views, amazing bathrooms and upholstery. But now the part that just disappointed us so much. The rooms were not cleaned properly, there were cobwebs. I don't know why Banyan Tree is trying to manage with a skeletal staff having limited or no English speaking and zero guest relation skills. The aircon in the main lobby is really ineffective to say the least. The check-in time taken was 30 mins despite of very few guests. Despite of the heat, we were not offered cold towels or water. Even on reaching at 3 PM, we were asked to wait for 1 hour because the rooms had not been cleaned. The room service was pathetic. It took me 15 mins to explain that I am looking for a vegetarian dish and what I got is boiled pasta with no sauce and pok choy (Even Hospitals would provide me better food) Being a new property is no excuse. In fact, they should be putting in even more effort!

With a super luxury brand like Banyan Tree that attracts a hefty price tag, you deserve nothing short of remarkable but what we got was nothing short of embarrassment. On our check-out, we were promptly asked to return the toilet kits and other bathroom amenities. Since I don't understand Chinese, I was embarrassed in front of my Chinese colleagues by indirectly telling them to let me know. Well, if a hotel like this needs to do such cheap marketing antics, to make money, they should atleast put a big note in the room that all amenities are on SALE!!! I don't think its going to look pretty, so they rather not do it. BUT ATLEAST I SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ASKED TO RETURN the stuff that is not going to cost more than $20 after paying more than $600 for the night. More than anything, it was the sheer embarrassment that left me in dismay. And having stayed at so many hotels across the world, this was the first time I was asked to return bathroom amenities and it happened to be Banyan Tree, a brand that is supposed to resonate great customer service. Whats even more interesting is that I was present at the property till 7 PM that day. The staff could figure out that the amenities are missing but couldn't hand over the clothes that I left behind by mistake. Not visiting another Banyan Tree again, ever!

First be advised that 50% of the resort is closed due to big construction problems in the villas and all the hotel, but the other rooms are good and the staff is very friendly. note there is no cars and few taxis in this region. they gave me a room with two levels but i refused teh room cause the lower floor is strange with few external light. take the room on the same floor. the region is beautiful. there is one very friendly taxi, he will take you directly to yellow mountains. and easy access to xidi or hongcun by taxi. the restaurant is good but it's better in Yangshuo. There is a direct bus from xidi to hongcun but after there is Nothing to go back to the hotel 2 miles away. The hotel must put a free shuttle service. If you love tea, you have tea plantations everywhere.

A long weekend took us to the Banyan Tree Huangshan Hotel to the Yellow Mountains. The first view in the morning from the hotel terrace was giving the stunning impression of the landscape. I wrote to friends: "China can as well be so much quiet, that you hear the leaves in the wind." A perfect location with large, perfect modern rooms. All staff have been very friendly and helpful - all the time! The breakfast was completely served and well arranged for all wishes, Chinese and international.
A no. 1 place, which has its price.

We booked the Banyan because of its name and the great reviews here.
Unfortunately it didn’t meet our expectations.

There are a lot of positives about the resort. The location is wonderful amidst the mountains, away from the hustle of the major cities. The ancient villages nearby are amazing and definitely worth a visit.
The architecture or the resort fits beautifully into the landscape and the staff tries their hardest to make you feel welcome.

BUT

Half the resort is under construction, so it’s mostly empty. You feel a little like you’re in a ghost town.
Even in the main Lobby you could hear the construction noise upon arrival. Luckily we heard nothing in our villa. The villa is beautiful on the inside, but is in need of renovation on the outside. (Peeling pain/water stains)

The restaurant offers many Chinese dishes which are good, as far as we tried.
Unfortunately the western options are almost uneatable. The Hawaii pizza was just dough with a fruit cocktail on it and smothered in cheese.
They also do not speak much English, which makes it impossible to ask about unknown dishes or make changes to your order. Not what I expect from a 5 star hotel.

We booked a trip to Huangshan mountain with the hotel unfortunately no one mentioned that literally everything there is in Chinese and nobody speaks any English. So we were dropped off by our driver and had to fend for ourselves. It would have been nice to have some information from the staff about that.
When we complain about that upon return all we received as an answer was that they knew of the English issues there. No reaction to our feedback beyond that.

The deposit they took from us upon check in was the highest I have ever encountered. 15000 Yuan for only two nights of stay? That’s ridiculous. And it was blocked on my credit card over a week after my check out which made the card basically unusable.

The English level overall is quite poor and makes it difficult to express your complaints or wishes. Also there seems to be no communication between different employees, they constantly had to call each other to double check if what we said was true or even what we wanted. So a lot of waiting time. That was extremely exhausting!

We visited in July and it was really nice weather but it seemed unusually nice. I think it is typically raining in July. The hotel was nice and the staff was very accommodating. Some things to know:
- The hotel is about 90 minutes from the train station (we took the high speed train from Shanghai), a taxi will cost about 200 RMB
- The hotel is about 45 minutes from the Yellow Mountain. This also cost 200 RMB each way but we might have paid too much.
- Once you get to the yellow mountain you have to pay for a bus to get you into the site. Then you pay additional for a cable car if you choose to do that. The bus was 19 RMB per person each way. The cable car was 90 RMB per person each way. Plus you have to pay 230 RMB per person as an entrance fee. What you should gather from this is: bring enough cash!
- The cable car ride was really stunning and the hike up the mountain after the cable car was still pretty intense. At the end of the day we had climbed over 100 flights of stairs. Well worth it!!
- The restaurant in the hotel was good but expensive. If you like spicy food I recommend the curry beef! Yum!
- the tour of the Alicia village was cool but the tour guide spoke zero English. Probably best to do your own research ahead of time.
Have fun!!

The Banyan Tree was opened around June 2015, and is located at the foothills of Huangshan. We stayed there for two nights – one night before we went up to Huangshan, and one night after we descended from Huangshan. The hotel is in a fairly remote area – about 90-minte drive from the Huangshan airport. It is also several miles away from the nearest town and village. Our hotel room, a one-bedroom suite, was very spacious and nicely furnished. The hotel grounds cover tens of acres and can only be navigated with a golf cart. The architecture of the hotel is modeled after the local Anhui style. Banyan Tree also offers may villas for sale at this property as time share units. When we stayed at the hotel, we hardly saw other hotel guests, but we heard that the time share sales have been going very well. Service at the hotel was somewhat of a problem, as most people can hardly speak any English, although the attitude was always great. When our tour guide called the hotel to confirm our reservation, he was told to call back later as the reservation staff were all at lunch! If you stay at this hotel, you are more or less forced to have dinner at the hotel restaurant. On the other hand, there are only two 5-star hotels at the foothills of Huangshan – the other one being a large Crowne Plaza associated with the Holiday Inn chain. So if I have to visit this area again, I would still choose the Banyan Tree Huangshan.
