Leroy Selman Matthews Obituary

Leroy Selman Matthews, age 74, of Rome, GA, passed away Friday morning, September 24, 2021. Leroy was born in Piedmont, AL, on July 14, 1947, son of the late James William Matthews and Ara Zona Dawson Matthews. He had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County most of his life and was a 1966 graduate of Model High School. His senior year of school Leroy was selected as “All State Linebacker”. Leroy served his country honorably, serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After returning from his military duties, he worked as a real estate broker. He was an accomplished auctioneer, co-owner of United Auctions and a past president of American Association of Auctioneers. He was also past president of the Model-Johnson School Foundation. Leroy was a longtime member of the Callier Country Club, loved playing golf, and was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Matthews and Shelton Matthews. Leroy is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Harvey and Cindy Burnes of Aragon, GA, Tony and Lucy Burnes of Rome, and Daniel and Brette Burnes of Decatur, AL; six grandchildren, Gracie Whitman, Rush Burnes, Will Burnes, Miriam Burnes, Ely Burnes and Jake Burnes; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Alliene Matthews of Aragon, and Dennis and Shannon Matthews of Rockmart, GA; sisters-in-law, Dot Matthews of Montezuma, GA, and Mary Ann Matthews of Rome. A host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services for Leroy will be held Sunday afternoon, September 26, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. in the Alvis Miller Memorial Chapel of Salmon Funeral Home with Mr. Melton Moss officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Forney, AL. Leroy’s family will receive friends at Salmon Funeral Home Sunday from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Pallbearers will include Harvey Burnes, Tony Burnes, Daniel Burnes, Don Matthews, Dennis Matthews, Mike Warnock and Ed Murdock.
