Wilson’s acting career began in 1994 with the lead role in the short film Bottle Rocket, directed by Wes Anderson and co-written with his older brother Owen. In 1996, it was reworked as a feature-length picture. He was cast opposite Calista Flockhart in Telling Lies in America and made a cameo role in the film-within-the-film of Scream 2, both in 1997, after coming to Hollywood with his two brothers. Best Men, about a group of friends who pull off a heist on their way to a wedding, and Home Fries, about two brothers interested in the same lady for different reasons, were Wilson’s back-to-back romantic flicks in 1998, opposite Drew Barrymore. He was a schooner’s physician beau.

He played Detective Carlson in Blue Streak in 1999. Later, he co-starred in the 2001 comedy Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon. It was followed by The Royal Tenenbaums and Old School. Wilson also had a recurring role on That ’70s Show as Michael Kelso’s older brother Casey Kelso from 2002 to 2005. Wilson appeared in Mike Judge’s dystopian comedy Idiocracy in 2006. Wilson played a regular serviceman who was frozen in a cryogenics study. He awakens after hundreds of years in a far less knowledgeable America.

Wilson appeared in Vacancy, a thriller starring Kate Beckinsale, and Blonde Ambition in 2007. He worked on Henry Poole is Here in La Mirada, California in the same year, which was released in 2008. Tenure, a film he starred in, was released in 2009. He appears in the films Death at a Funeral and Middle Men in 2010. He starred in the HBO TV series Enlightened from 2011 to 2013. Wilson has been starring in the DC Universe/The CW series Stargirl as a sidekick-turned-mechanic-tutor since 2020.

It is a 2006 American science fiction comedy, where he featured as Joe Bauers, the film tells the story of Joe Bauers (Wilson), an American soldier who, along with prostitute Rita (Rudolph), takes part in a government hibernation experiment. The experiment goes awry and Joe awakens in the year 2505, in a dystopian world that is incredibly dumbed-down by mass commercialism and mindless TV programming that he has become the smartest man on the planet.
