The Nightmare Animatronics are heavily withered, exaggeratedly nightmarish versions of the existing animatronics that haunt the nightmares of either Michael Afton or the Crying Child.

Physical Appearance[]

Alongside with the twisted animatronics from the novel trilogy's universe, the nightmare animatronics appear as the most menacing out of all animatronic classes.

Most of the nightmare animatronics are featured with a deteriorated appearance with a big series of rips and holes all over, sporting a total of ten fingers with spike-like claws/nails, an excessive amount of long dangerously sharp teeth (found in both the structure of the animatronics and the endoskeletons), and small metallic eyes. Their endoskeleton heads look suspiciously similar to that of a human skull, with a line of indentations down their forehead.

Functionality[]

The nightmare animatronics are nightmarish versions of Fazbear Entertainment's animatronics, which as the name implies haunts the nightmares of those scared of the animatronics. Similar to the pre-rebuilt incarnations of the originals, their behavioural function is that of a sadistic, feral beast, and they can use their gnarly claws and teeth to kill their pursued victims.

They seem to have shared personality traits with the Twisted Animatronics. In this case, they are all subservient purely to their creator, William Afton, but have also exhibited relentlessness, when chasing their victims, and ruthlessness, when killing them. Although built purely to kill whomsoever Afton tells them to, they have been known to lash out violently whenever provoked.

Their endoskeletons seem mostly the same from previous games, except for one strange difference of seemingly detachable razor-sharp claws on each metal finger. There are also out-of-place long, sharp teeth on each of the nightmares' jaws, rendering it seemingly impossible for the nightmare animatronics to close their mouths. The endoskeletons also all have five fingers, similar to the springlock suits, funtime animatronics, and rockstar animatronics.

Animatronics[]

Canon[]

Freddy[]

Main article: Freddy

The nightmarish incarnation of Freddy Fazbear, he's still the brown bear we've come to know and fear, just a lot more tattered and torn than ever before, and with a monstrous jaw to boot. There are also three miniature animatronics, called "Freddles", attached to his body. Nightmare Freddy appears in Night 1 to Night 8, aside from Night 5.

Cold-hearted and malicious, The replica of Nightmare Freddy created by Cassidy in Ultimate Custom Night appears as a warped, twisted version of the original Freddy's persona. Like the other nightmares, Nightmare Freddy has no qualms about tormenting his victims with his metallic hands and enjoys mocking them when given the opportunity, as seen in Ultimate Custom Night. As with other nightmares, his put-downs tend to be rather sardonic in nature. He speaks using a low-pitched, monotonous, gravelly, robotic voice. He is also occasionally somewhat poetic in his speech. The Freddles however, are shown to be more mischievous and shy, in contrast to their master-of-sorts.

Bonnie[]

Main article: Bonnie

The nightmarish incarnation of Bonnie the Rabbit, still a large, bluish-purple rabbit, but some of his features, such as his teeth and claws, appear to be exaggerated. His red bow tie is just about the only part of him that is not in tatters. Nightmare Bonnie appears in Night 1 to Night 8, aside from Night 5.

Like the rest of the nightmares, Nightmare Bonnie is depicted as a cruel and menacingly animatronic who desires nothing more than to harm his victims, making him the complete opposite of his original persona, Bonnie.

Chica[]

Main article: Chica

The nightmarish incarnation of Chica the Chicken, if you thought her yellow feathers and orange beak made her sort of cute before, think again! Nightmare Chica appears shredded from head to toe, and has mismatched eyes alongside monstrous claws and teeth. Her companion is Nightmare Cupcake. Nightmare Chica appears in Night 1 to Night 8, aside from Night 5.

Like the other nightmare animatronics, Nightmare Chica is depicted as a cruel, ferocious animatronic who desires nothing more than to harm her victims.

Foxy[]

Main article: Foxy

The nightmarish counterpart of Foxy the Pirate, Nightmare Foxy is similarly a slightly larger, more tattered version of the familiar fox. He's got a pirate hook for a right hand, but is lacking the pirate eye patch. Nightmare Foxy appears in Night 1 to Night 8, aside from Night 5.

Based on his appearance, Nightmare Foxy is depicted as a cruel and menacing animatronic who desires nothing more than to harm his victims. Nightmare Foxy also has a tendency to easily startle his victims whereas in Five Nights at Freddy's 4, he startles the player when he is in the closet, and whereas in Help Wanted, where he is lurking in the hallway ready to charge and kill the player, when running.

Fredbear[]

Main article: Fredbear

The nightmarish variant of Fredbear, who is the mascot of the old Fredbear's Family Diner location. A giant, terrifying version of the Fredbear we've been seeing in the mini-games. This tattered and torn bear animatronic has golden fur and wears a purple hat and bow tie. Nightmare Fredbear appears in Night 5 and from 4AM of Night 6 as the only antagonist.

Described as the complete opposite of the original Fredbear in terms of behavior, The replica of Nightmare Fredbear created by Cassidy in Ultimate Custom Night is a monstrous animatronic who enjoys nothing more than tormenting his victims when the opportunity arises. Nightmare Fredbear also appears to share a similar demeanor to the Fredbear plush from the fourth game's minigames but a little more warped. His voice resembles several other voices rolled into one.

Nightmare[]

Main article: Nightmare

The monstrous form of Shadow Freddy, a giant, terrifying version of the Fredbear we've been seeing in the mini-games, but completely black with a yellow hat and bow tie. Nightmare's costume is actually translucent, as if his endoskeleton is cloaked in a shadow. Nightmare appears in Night 7 and 8 from 4AM, as the only antagonist.

The replica of Nightmare created by Cassidy is a cruel, twisted animatronic who takes pleasure in tormenting his victims. This is apparent in Ultimate Custom Night, where he informs the player of their death in a rather sadistic manner. He also appears to enjoy mocking his victims upon getting the chance to do so. He also speaks using a deep, monstrous, intimidating voice, befitting his name.

Plushtrap[]

Main article: Plushtrap

A "nightmare" version of a Spring Bonnie plush toy. In the Halloween Edition of the game, he is replaced by Nightmare Balloon Boy.

Plushtrap also makes an appearance in the Night 3 end-of-night minigame. In this minigame, a kid can be seen holding a doll resembling Plushtrap (which their dad refers to as a "Finger Trap"). Upon approaching the child, she will say: "Where is your plush toy? Mine is Spring Bonnie. My Daddy says I have to be careful with him or I will pinch my finger. He is a finger trap, he says."

Based on his appearance and behavior, Plushtrap shares the same behavior as the rest of the nightmare animatronics, as Plushtrap tends to be very creepy and fast against the player. It is also worth to note that Plushtrap shares the same behavioral path as Nightmare BB.

Halloween Edition[]

Jack-O-Bonnie[]

Main article: Bonnie

This is a Halloween variant based on Nightmare Bonnie and designed after a jack o' lantern. He first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 as Nightmare Bonnie's replacement for the Halloween Edition update.

Jack-O-Bonnie's behavior is nearly identical to his regular variant; however, there are some differences. From the Left Hall, he doesn't seem to duck down a little while retreating, unlike his original variant. Very much like an actual Jack-o-lantern, bright shining colors from within his body and head causes him to glow in the dark. Jack-O-Chica shares the same effect.

Like his original-colored counterpart and other nightmare animatronics, Jack-O-Bonnie is a cold, intimidating creature who hunts down on his victim like a predator beast.

Jack-O-Chica[]

Main article: Chica

This Halloween variant is based on Nightmare Chica and designed after a jack o' lantern. She first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 as Nightmare Chica's replacement for the Halloween Edition update. Her companion is Jack-O-Lantern, replacing Nightmare Cupcake. Jack-O-Chica's behavior is almost exactly like her original variant. Interestingly, bright shining colors from within her body and head causes her to glow in the dark which can be seen while she's retreating from the Right Hall. The same effect goes to Jack-O-Bonnie.

Based on her quotes from Ultimate Custom Night, The replica of Jack-O-Chica created by Cassidy is cold-hearted and ruthless. She is also shown to have a vengeful, yet mocking disposition. Her voice is low-pitched and edited with television-like static noises.

In Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, Jack-O-Chica's personality is the same; however, she is more aggressive, ruthless, and even sadistic when communicating. As seen from her quotes when defeated, she is also a bit of a sore loser.

Mangle[]

Main article: Mangle

The nightmarish counterpart of Mangle. He first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 as Nightmare Foxy's replacement for the Halloween Edition update. Nightmare Mangle behaves almost exactly like his counterpart, Nightmare Foxy. Like Nightmare Foxy, at this point, if the player fails to check the Closet frequently enough, then Nightmare Mangle will come out and attack the player. While Nightmare Mangle is in the closet, static noise will play, making surviving far more difficult, because it drowns out most audio cues.

Nothing much is known about Nightmare Mangle's personality due to the fact that he emits garbled radio static, however based upon his appearance, Nightmare Mangle seems to be aggressive like the other nightmare animatronics.

Marionette[]

Main article: Marionette

The nightmarish counterpart of Marionette. She first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 as Nightmare's replacement for the Halloween Edition update. Nightmarionne behaves exactly as Nightmare, meaning that it can attack from the Bed, Closet, Left Hall, and Right Hall. As a replacement of Nightmare, Nightmarionne only appears in Nightmare and Custom Night modes from 4 AM onward. It can appear any night with the All Nightmare challenge turned on.

When Nightmarionne is active, the music of the Music Box from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will play. Nightmarionne will also occasionally laugh, similar to Nightmare Fredbear and Nightmare. Similar to Golden Freddy from the first game while jumpscaring the player, Nightmarionne's close-up screen will appear with light-bluish colors, and a lack of teeth.

Based on its quotes in Ultimate Custom Night, The replica of Nightmarionne created by Cassidy is wicked, vengeful, and sadistic. As with the other nightmares, it opportunistically torments their victims. its voice is low-pitched, distorted, and also stutters in a glitch-like fashion.

Balloon Boy[]

Main article: BB

Also known as Nightmare BB for short is the nightmarish counterpart of Balloon Boy, unlike his original counterpart, as revealed in Ultimate Custom Night, Nightmare Balloon Boy talks in complete sentences. As with the other nightmares, he has no qualms about torturing his victims with his bony, metal hands. As evident by his quotes in the aforementioned game, he also has a tendency to mock his victims, whenever the opportunity presents itself. The chomping noise heard in one of his quotes suggests gluttony and bloodthirstiness.

Nightmare Balloon Boy only exists in the "Fun With Balloon Boy" minigame, which functions almost exactly like the minigame "Fun With Plushtrap". Nightmare Balloon Boy starts off on the chair and then moves to four sets of doors, hallway, the "X" on the floor, or jumpscares the player.

Nightmare Balloon Boy functions exactly as Plushtrap in the "Fun with Plushtrap" minigame, except for the fact that he laughs or says "Hi" or "Hello" in a deep, demonic voice as well as the fact that he moves at a slightly faster speed than Plushtrap (given the shorter timer), making him more of a challenge. His jumpscare is similar in fashion.

Curse of Dreadbear[]

Dreadbear[]

Main article: Dreadbear

The Halloween variant of Nightmare Fredbear and based on Frankenstein's monster. He appeared as the main antagonist in Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted's DLC Curse of Dreadbear. Like the nightmare animatronics, he supports five clawed fingers, but has three-toed feet that are similar in fashion to the toy animatronics.

Grimm Foxy[]

Main article: Foxy

The Halloween variant based on Nightmare Foxy and designed after a jack o' lantern. He appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted's DLC Curse of Dreadbear. Grimm Foxy replaces Foxy in the Danger! Keep Out! mode of the Curse of Dreadbear DLC for Help Wanted, behaving the exact same way as his counterpart from the first game. When he attacks, he will first peek out of the curtains, then he will come out further and get ready to charge. Due to being a reskin of Foxy, the Easter Egg from leaving the Office still exists.

Trivia[]

  • Aside from Nightmarionne, Nightmare Mangle, and Nightmare Balloon Boy, the main four nightmare animatronics and their FNaF World counterparts bear resemblance to their withered counterparts from Five Nights at Freddy's 2, aside from the teeth and eyes. The only exceptions are Nightmare Fredbear, Nightmare, and Plushtrap.
    • Nightmare Freddy's head, color and his FNaF World counterpart bears a striking resemblance to Withered Freddy's appearance in the second game.
    • Due to Nightmare Bonnie's similar design to that of Withered Bonnie, it could be assumed that Nightmare Bonnie's appearance is based off of Withered Bonnie previous looks during the events of Five Nights at Freddy's 4, rather than his incarnation in the first game.
      • The way Nightmare Bonnie travels in the Left Hall is similar to the way Bonnie goes in the West Hall from Five Nights at Freddy's. It is also similar to how Withered Bonnie entered the Left Air Vent in Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
      • The way Nightmare Bonnie's left foot and right hand is completely stripped off from its fabric is how Withered Bonnie's left foot and right hand from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is completely stripped off.
    • Nightmare Chica's head bears a striking resemblance to that of Withered Chica's model, as both are large and seemingly split from the upper jaw down. Her beak is much larger than that of Chica from the first game.
      • The behavior in which Nightmare Chica approaches the Bedroom via the Right Hall is similar to that of her counterpart, Chica, who approaches the Office through the East Hall in the first game. This behavior also correlates with Withered Chica's crawling through the Right Air Vent to enter the Office in the second game.
    • Nightmare Foxy resembles Withered Foxy from the second game, with his body being torn completely away in his lower body and his head shape.
      • The way Nightmare Foxy hides in the Closet is very similar to the way the original Foxy would hide behind the curtain in Pirate Cove in the first game.
        • His behavior is also similar to that of Freddy Fazbear from the first game. Both Nightmare Foxy and Freddy only pose a threat to the player if they enter a certain location (the Closet in the case of Nightmare Foxy, and the East Hall Corner in the case of Freddy), both can be prevented from entering this location by constantly monitoring them, and both will not leave this location once they have entered it until the end of the night.
  • All of the Halloween Edition animatronics, aside from Nightmare Balloon Boy, are not canon to FNaF 4. That being said, this rule does not apply to later games that they appear in.
  • In Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, Plushtrap and some of the other canon nightmares' starting locations in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 are shown on the map on the Breaker Control Box in the Breaker Room.
    • However, it should be noted that two are missing. This appears to be Nightmare Freddy and Nightmare, as none of the spots are on the bed, however Nightmare Fredbear could be missing instead of one of the prior two.
    • Plushtrap's hallway actually shows five different dots. While it is possible that it was five different plushtraps, it could also have Nightmare Balloon Boy and the Plushbabies in there, due to when the breaker room is seen.
  • Nightmarionne resembles the iconic paranormal creature known as Slenderman. However, Slenderman's face is completely faceless while only possessing a nose. Nightmarionne does not share this feature.
  • There is an official MyMoji virtual sticker of Nightmare Springtrap, as Springtrap does not canonically have a nightmare counterpart outside of Plushtrap in the series' universe. Given that Springtrap is controlled by a zombified William Afton, Nightmare Springtrap would be a separate entity.
  • Several people believe that the Nightmare Animatronics are physical robots, built by William Afton. Despite this, they are merely nightmares, shown by the distance between the locations in the game and Mike listing Nightmare Fredbear within the Survival Logbook.
    • It should also be noted that Nightmare Freddy in particular also phases through objects, while exhibiting unnatural behavior.
      • Nightmare Freddy isn't seen outside of his jumpscare, where he appears to jump out from inside of the bed to attack.
      • Nightmare Bonnie also phases through a door.
