Updated Oct. 18, 2023 – The world of The Equalizer was first introduced to audiences in the '80s with a television show of the same name, created by Richard Lindheim and Michael Sloan. The duo then came back when a revival of the series was greenlit, and now they are co-showrunners and executive producers of the 2021 show. And it's still going strong!
Also joining them behind the scenes are Zoe Robyn, Meredith Mills, Joe Gazzam, Erik Lee, Jamila Daniel, Raymond Quinlan, and Jolian Blevins as producers. Here's everything we know about the crime dram's fourth season ahead of its release!
Has The Equalizer season 4 release date been announced?
Unfortunately at this time, we don't know when The Equalizer season 4 is coming out. The network hasn't shared an official air date yet. The crime drama is not coming back in 2023, though it was initially a part of CBS' fall 2023 television lineup. The series was supposed to air weekly Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Now however, if we had to take a guess it could be held for the midseason schedule. That would be sometime in January-March 2024.
CBS renewed the show for a fourth season back in 2022, so we've known for a long time that it's happening. But that doesn't mean the writers started work on the production. They would have started in May 2023 if the writers strike didn't happen (more on that below). So that's why even though it got an early renewal, work on it is not complete.
Is The Equalizer season 4 affected by the strikes?
Yes, The Equalizer season 4 is affected by the writers strike and the actors strike. This is why the return of the series has been delayed and it's not coming in fall 2023. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) were on strike starting May 2, 2023. The good news though is that as of Sept. 25, the writers strike is over and writers can get back to work.
Many writers rooms reopened the week of Oct. 2. Though we're not 100% sure whether the team has gone back in for The Equalizer. But what's important is that they are in fact allowed to go back to work now. This came after the guild and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), who represents the big studios in Hollywood came to an agreement. The new contract is for three years and in effect through May 1, 2026.
However when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), the news isn't so great just yet. The strike began on July 14, 2023, and so the actors strike is still ongoing. While the actors guild and AMPTP were previously in talks, those negotiations have stopped as of Oct. 12 since "industry CEOs have walked away from the bargaining table," per SAG-AFTRA on X.
Cast: Who could be returning?
An official cast list for the next chapter of the story hasn't been shared yet. However, we do expect the main cast members to return. We shared them below:
- Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall
- Tory Kittles as Marcus Dante
- Adam Goldberg as Harry Keshegian
- Liza Lapira as Melody "Mel" Bayani
- Laya DeLeon Hayes as Delilah
- Lorraine Toussaint as Viola "Aunt Vi" Marsette
Queen Latifah is an icon in the industry! She's an actress, rapper, and singer. Her very first album was released when the talent was only 19 years old. You need to give "All Hail the Queen" a listen. Over the years onscreen, she's taken on roles in Living Single, Chicago, Last Holiday, and more.
How many episodes is The Equalizer? (Where to watch)
So far, The Equalizer has a total of 46 episodes that have come from three seasons. Season 1 debuted in February 2021 and ran until May of that year for 10 episodes. Freshman seasons are usually the shortest, so it doesn't come as a surprise that seasons 2 and 3 have a total of 18 episodes each.
It's not yet known how many episodes season 4 will have. While the first three seasons of the show have had 18 episodes, it might not be the same for the fourth season. Even though writers are back, there's been delays in production. So networks are looking at possible shortened seasons, more like in the 10-15 episodes range. We'll have to wait and see what CBS decides.
Currently, all three seasons of The Equalizer are streaming on Paramount+. When the show does return, it will air weekly at nights on CBS. Then new episodes will be available to stream the next day they air on Paramount+.
