Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean reopens after being renovated.
Disney releases the comedy Jungle 2 Jungle starring
Tim Allen, Lolita Davidovich, JoBeth Williams, Martin
Short, Sam Huntington, and David Ogden Stiers.
Michael Cromwell (Allen), a self-absorbed, successful commodities
broker, learns he has a thirteen-year-old son named Mimi-Siku who
was raised in the jungle. Cromwell decides to bring the boy to New
York City and turns his life upside down in the process. The film is
an American remake of the 1994 French film Un indien dans la ville
(also known as Little Indian, Big City). Directed by John Pasquin,
Jungle 2 Jungle is distributed by Buena Vista Pictures.
1962:
Singer, songwriter and actress Taylor Dayne, who played the role of Princess
Amneris in Disney's Broadway show Aida in 2001, is born Leslie Wunderman in
Baldwin, New York. Best known for her first dance-pop hit "Tell It to My Heart" and the follow-up ballad
"I'll Always Love You," Dayne has performed in venues all over the world - including the House of Blues in
Downtown Disney, Florida.
2005:
Film producer, writer and director Debra Hill (known for such classics as
Halloween) passes away in Los Angeles, California. In 1988, Hill signed a
contract with Walt Disney Pictures for her Debra Hill Productions and produced the 1989 feature Gross
Anatomy, short films for Disney theme parks and an NBC special for Disneyland's 35th anniversary.
It is announced that the Disney-based Mandeville Films (who are shooting
The Shaggy Dog a sequel to the Shaggy Disney films of the past) will start production on a new Swiss Family Robinson feature in September at the
Queenslands Warner Roadshow Studios in Australia.
1927:
The Alice ComedyAlice the Collegiate, with Margie Gay, is released.
Alice gets a job teaching football at a local college, where the star quarterback is none other than Julius the cat!
1935:
In the north of Spain, the third of the European Disney weeklies,
Mickey – Revista Infantil Ilustrada (which means Mickey – Illustrated Child Magazine) is published by Editorial Molino.
1942:
Michael Eisner, who ran The Walt Disney Company from 1984 to 2005, is born
in Mount Kisco, New York (though he was raised in New York City). Prior to joining
Disney, Eisner was President and Chief Operating Officer of Paramount Pictures Corp.
1955:
The 7th Emmy Awards are presented at the Moulin Rouge Nightclub
in Hollywood, California. Hosted by Steve Allen and broadcast on NBC, it is the first
Emmy Awards ceremony to ever be televised nationally. An Emmy for Best Individual Program of the Year, goes to
the Disneyland television episode "Operation Undersea." A second Emmy for Best Television Film Editing goes to
Lynn Harrison and Grant K. Smith for their work on the Disneyland episode "Operation Undersea." Producer Walt
Disney's Disneyland series picks up a third Emmy for Best Variety Series Including, Musical Variety.
1956
The Disneyland television series airs the episode "On Vacation,"
in which Jimminy Cricket takes a look at the friendship of
Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck.
1980:
Singer TJ Fantini, a member of Disney Channel's
The All New Mickey Mouse Club, is born in Belleville, Illinois.
2001:
Disney's Jungle Adventures On Ice swings into the Minneapolis Target Center.
2006:
Walt Disney Records releases That's So Raven Too, a collection from and inspired by
the hit Disney Channel Original television series.
Disney's 1959 black-and-white The Shaggy Dog (starring Fred Mac
Murray) and the 1976 follow-up The Shaggy D.A. (starring Dean Jones)
are both released to DVD.
Sons & Daughters, a new ABC sitcom television series about an extended blended family living close together in a neighborhood, debuts.
The 1945 Academy Awards are held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre with hosts Bob
Hope and James Stewart. Walt Disney Studio Sound Department (nominated for The Three Caballeros)
loses to RKO's The Bell's of Saint Mary in the Sound Recording category. The Disney team of Edward Plumb, Paul
J. Smith and Charles Wolcott - nominated for the music in The Three Caballeros, are edged out by Georgie Stoll for
his score for Anchors Aweigh. Although nominated for Short Subjects, Cartoon - Disney's Donald's Crime is beat out
by MGM's Quiet Please.
2008:
In a ceremony prior to the park's opening, Disney Legend Bob Gurr receives a window on Disneyland's Main Street USA. Gurr's Disneyland designs include the Autopia, the Monorail, Omnimovers, and the Main Street Vehicles.
Walt Disney Pictures releases the comedy feature College Road Trip. When an overachieving high school student (played by Raven-Symoné) decides to travel around the country to
choose the perfect college, her overprotective cop father (played by Martin Lawrence) decides to
accompany her in order to keep her on the straight and narrow. This comical adventure also features
Brenda Song, Donny Osmond, and Will Sasso.
1941:
Disney's Donald Duck short Golden Eggs is released. Having a hard time harvesting eggs
from the henhouse, Donald goes in disguise as a hen to get them!

This year's Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival kicks off in Florida. Running
through May 20, the festival features traditional topiaries, HGTV stars, and the Flower Power concert series.

Bringing Down the House, a comedy film written by Jason Filardi and directed by
Adam Shankman, is released by Touchstone Pictures. Lawyer Peter Sanderson (played by
Steve Martin) wants to dive back into dating after his divorce and has a hard time meeting the right women. But
he lucks out with online dating and meets a fellow lawyer. The two agree to meet in the flesh, but the woman he meets, an escaped convict named Charlene (Queen Latifah), is not what he expects. Distributed by Buena
Vista Pictures, the cast includes Eugene Levy, Kimberly J. Brown, and Angus T. Jones.
2017:
Moana is released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on Blu-ray (2D and
3D) and DVD in the U.S. The Blu-ray release also introduces a short film featuring Maui and Moana, titled Gone Fishing. First released in theaters in 2016, Moana features the voices of Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, and Jemaine Clement.
2016:
Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters, a trackless dancing cars ride located in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, officially opens to guests. The attraction features Luigi, the Italian roadster who runs the Casa Della Tires shop in Radiator Springs. Guests ride in the car vehicles as they move and spin to Italian music. It is the first attraction at the Disneyland Resort to use a trackless ride system.
2018:
"The Happiest Show on Earth"—a runway fashion event featuring a Mickey-inspired collection designed by couture brand Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, takes place at Disneyland (the first fashion show held at the park in 40 years). The show also serves as Opening Ceremony’s Spring 2018 runway show and closes out fashion week celebrations around the world.
2000:
Pinocchio is released on VHS and DVD under the Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection banner. Included is A Wish Come True: The Making of Pinocchio, a short documentary narrated by voice over artist Mark Elliot.
1970:
Actress Rachel Weisz is born in Westminster, London, England. She portrayed Evanor, the Wicked Witch of the East, in Disney's 2013 Oz the Great and Powerful.
1897:
Special effect animator Cy Young is born in Suzhou, Jiangsu, Qing China. Hired by Disney to be head of his new special effects animation department (along with animator Ugo D'Orsi), his credits included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Fantasia, and Dumbo. Young left the studio after the 1941 Disney animators' strike and worked as a staff artist and clerk at the Air Force, where he worked on various projects.
2021:
Blizzard Beach in Walt Disney World reopens almost a full year after the Florida
theme park closed its gates due to the coronavirus health crisis. While capacity is limited at the ski resort-inspired water park, Disney is not currently requiring reservations for Blizzard Beach as it for its four traditional theme parks. (Typhoon Lagoon, Disney World’s other water park, remains closed.)
