International smuggling has exploded, deepening and accelerating the collaboration of transnational organized crime and terrorist groups. Attacks like the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan shootings in Paris, the kidnappings and murders by Boko Haram in Nigeria, and the San Bernardino shooting were partially funded by seemingly harmless illegal goods such as cheap cigarettes, smuggled oil, prostitution, fake Viagra, fake designer bags, and even bootleg DVDs.

But how can this be? In
Blood Profits, Vanessa Neumann, an expert on dismantling illicit trade, explains how purchasing illegal goods translates to supporting organized crime and terrorists. Neumann shows how the effects of the collapsed Iron Curtain, USSR scientists and intelligence agents left without work, regional trade pacts, the dissipation of the East-versus-West mentality, and new-age technology have all led to an intricate network of illegal trade. She leads the reader through a variety of cases, both by geography and by industry (selecting industries where illicit trade is generally poorly understood), before extracting lessons learned into some policy recommendations that we can all embrace.

Review

"A philosopher’s gripping exploration of the netherworld of international crime and terrorism: their psychology and strategies – our vulnerabilities and unwitting complicity. Blood Profits is an enlightening read for policy wonks, crime fighters and development experts." ―Thomas Pogge, Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs, Yale University

"Neumann takes the reader on a breathtaking tour of some of most corrupt and dangerous places on earth where terrorists and narco-traffickers meet and collude. The amazing thing is that the revenues they feed on come from New York, London and Paris. The disturbing truth that Neumann so cogently analyzes is that the earnings from the sales of fake Vuitton handbags, illicit drugs and cigarettes is what keeps the terrorists and criminals afloat. As Neumann shows, the joke is on us. We ignore what stares us in the face at our peril. The growing overlap between organized crime and terrorism is a toxic brew that can only come back to haunt us in the West. Hold on for a dizzying ride in
Blood Profits and expect to be baffled why we allow the collusion between criminals and terrorists to expand." ―Mat Burrows, Director of the Foresight, Strategy and Risks Initiative at the Atlantic Council and author of The Future, Declassified: Megatrends that Will Undo the World Unless We Take Action

In Blood Profits, Dr. Vanessa Neumann aggressively challenges the assumptions still carried by too many people about counterfeit merchandise. Neumann shows us that the contraband cigarettes, perfume, and designer goods we buy because they are cheap cost society dearly. In the modern world economy, these illicit goods are not the products of small backroom operations but instead, the output of global criminal-terrorist syndicates whose profits from these illegal activities rival the margins found in illegal drugs and weapons trade.

The world’s order has dramatically changed in this century and there now exists a collaborative substratum of criminals, terrorists and complicit government officials who thrive on the profits of illicit trafficking. In her writing, Neumann adroitly interweaves firsthand accounts of corruption from her native Venezuela with stories of her experiences helping corporate and government clients in the planet’s biggest cities and remotest corners. Neumann is an international expert on the convergence of criminal–terrorist organizations. In Blood Profits, Neumann exposes the reader to these groups’ reach and beastliness, she champions the heroes battling against them and offers field-tested solutions to help others in the ongoing fight.

Blood Profits is remarkably insightful and compelling. If you want to read an educational, interesting and addictive book about transnational organized crime and terrorist groups, this is it. It explains in depth all about criminal connections, mixing outstanding theoretical analysis with personal anecdotes. In addition, Neumann's way of writing is thought-provoking, it challenges us to think critically about the way our choices have an impact on inequality, corruption and injustice. It’s an inspiration to read about a woman so deep into that field, who is also an entrepreneuse. It’s a rare combination that not only adds interest but inspires other young women to follow their heart’s ambitions. This should definitely be a required reading.

A very compelling combination of both personal history and thorough, eyebrow-raising research! The access Dr. Neumann has cultivated in her years of work is deeply revealing of international illicit trade which made this a uniquely binge-worthy book.

Vanessa Neumann's account is close and personal. Through her own experiences of investigating the money trail of illegal international trade, the reader discovers how proceeds from that sidewalk purchase of counterfeit designer goods, that purchase of contraband tobacco, or an addiction to illegal drugs funds well organized multinational terrorist interests.

Blood Profits is a fascinating, daunting, and sometimes downright scary read with a wealth of detailed knowledge gleaned at the sharp end of investigative work, and analysed with intellectual rigour. It's also compellingly written and extremely timely as the synergies between organized crime, terrorism and political corruption become more and more complex..
