I just purchased a returned 8830WE from Verizon at a discount. Unfortunately, the phone has the old owner's email set up as well as his/her contacts. Is there a way to wipe all the old data and start over?

    Wipe the device...

Options / security / general options / menu / wipe device...

I don't know if that worked for you, but on the 8703e model you must go:

    OPTIONS...
    SECURITY OPTIONS...
    GENERAL SETTINGS...
Under SERVICES (If you have already been activated, this should be showing at the bottom) It may say something like "Desktop [S32534555]{3DES)"...
Click that and choose WIPE HANDHELD.

    Done.

I hate for this to be my first post, but let's say, you don't have a working trackball, because you did something stupid like take it out to color it, and now it's broken. Which means you have no way to get into the options>security options>general settings area.
Is there another way to wipe all the personal info off of the phone before you were to take it back for another phone?
Thanks all, love the forum...and Hi.

The trick would be to get to Options. From there, you can probably navigate by hitting the fist letter of each menu or screen options and hitting enter to select it. You can also wipe each of the databases on the phone by using Desktop Manager under Advanced Backup options to clear each database manually after a backup. This won't return the phone to factory settings, but at least your data will be wiped. Also, the command line utility of javaloader can be used to do a handheld wipe as well for both OS or just user data.

Cool. If I can do it from the desktop, I should be ok. Can't change icons without the trackball, which sucks. Thanks, We'll check it as soon as I get home. Also since you mentioned it, how would one restore it to factory settings?

    Much appreciated.

That's what the Device Wipe does under Options... where you can't get to because of the trackball issues.
