Maurice Sendak's beloved books are a must-have for every child's bookshelf Let the wild rumpus start! Introduce one of the most beloved children’s books of all time to a new generation of little readers in this Spanish edition. From beloved children's book creator Maurice Sendak comes a fantastical tale of an imaginary dream world. Maurice Sendak’s legacy continues with this playful counting extravaganza for the youngest child. Here is a small reader’s introduction to the magic of Mr. Sendak’s books—a journey that will continue for many years to come. First published in 1960, The Sign on Rosie’s Door portrays children in their very real world of imagination as only Maurice Sendak can. Containing pocket-size versions of perennial favorites Alligators All Around, Chicken Soup with Rice, One Was Johnny, and Pierre, this pint-size library is perfect for small hands.

For more than forty years, the books Maurice Sendak has written and illustrated have nurtured children and adults alike and have challenged established ideas about what children's literature is and should be. The New York Times has recognized that Sendak's work “has brought a new dimension to the American children's book and has helped to change how people visualize childhood.” Parenting recently described Sendak as “indisputably, the most revolutionary force in children's books.”

Winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are, in 1970 Sendak became the first American illustrator to receive the international Hans Christian Andersen Award, given in recognition of his entire body of work. In 1983, he received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award from the American Library Association, also given for his entire body of work.

Beginning in 1952, with A Hole Is to Dig by Ruth Krauss, Sendak's illustrations have enhanced many texts by other writers, including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik, children's books by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Randall Jarrell, and The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm. Dear Mili, Sendak's interpretation of a newly discovered tale by Wilhelm Grimm, was published to extraordinary acclaim in 1988.

In addition to Where the Wild Things Are (1963), Sendak has both written and illustrated

The Nutshell Library (1962), Higglety Pigglety Pop! (1967), In the Night Kitchen (1970), Outside Over There (1981), and, We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy (1993). He also illustrated Swine Lake (1999), authored by James Marshall, Brundibar (2003), by Tony Kushner, Bears (2005), by Ruth Krauss and, Mommy? (2006), his first pop-up book, with paper engineering by Matthew Reinhart and story by Arthur Yorinks.

Since 1980, Sendak has designed the sets and costumes for highly regarded productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Idomeneo, Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev's

The Love for Three Oranges, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and Hans Krása's Brundibár.

In 1997, Sendak received the National Medal of Arts from President Clinton. In 2003 he received the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, an international prize for children's literature established by the Swedish government. Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn in 1928. He now lives in Connecticut.

Unhealthy for children
Sorry that great talents were spent on this particular story, which basically shows a mom busy pining away for the traveling father, basically neglecting her children due to depression, and a young girl forced to care for and rescue a baby sibling because of mom’s neglect. This is not a story of a child helping a sibling for a short time, within a reasonable situation or with guidance, while mom is busy with self-care or work. This is a story of too much responsibility for a young girl who fears for the life of her baby sibling due to the incapacity of her mother. If you’ve seen Labyrinth with David Bowie, this is like the beginning of that movie.Knowing all this, I brought it into my home in order to discuss specifically with my eldest child that when a baby’s life is in danger, you go directly to an adult. You don’t “climb out the window” to “rescue a child” yourself. But it was too much for her anyway and she is frightened that something serious might happen to the baby now when mommy is so much as two feet away in the kitchen, cooking. This is a child not frightened by Harry Potter books/movies.And if you know neglected children, please get them help. Don’t torture them with an adult-size burden.

I really love the depth of Maurice Sendak and his stories. Outside Over There is a bit of a strange and creepy book, full of deep meanings. Illustrated amazingly by Sendak, it's a story about a girl left somewhat alone to care for her baby sister. Hooded "goblins" steal away her sister right from under her nose and she's not going to have it. Ida does all she can because she loves her sister and knows that she is responsible for any harm that comes to the child. The message at the end is heartwarming and many kids in today's society can relate to having to take care of their family in one way or another.

i was obsessed with this book as a little girl, i know every word. i carried the hardback version around with me for years to eventually pass on to the little girl i knew i'd have, but it was lost somewhere between here and california. such a wonderful story for parents with siblings, to gently teach responsibility to your older one for your younger one. in several interviews sendak said this was his favorite book, it was loosely based on his relationship with his sister. wonderful adventure and beautifully illustrated. :)

When my daughter was 4, she memorized this book. The pictures are great and it’s easy to read - even when you’re tired after a long day. My daughter is 41 now and I got this for my new grandson.

Amazing. Tackles life themes with honesty, which is what kids deserve. Depression, duty, regret, fear...I bought a used copy that was in excellent condition. Maurice Sendak considered this his finest work, more so than "where the wild things are." Somewhat autobiographical if you read about the artist's childhood.

Reading Maurice Sendak's books has become a new tradition in this grandma's home. I'm embarrassed to say I had never heard of "Where the Wild Things Are" until the 35-year-old attorney I work with mentioned it. I asked my son if he'd heard of it since I had never read it to him as a child, and he too was horrified to learn that it was one book not in the thousands of books catalogued in my memory. Needless to say, I own it now, and it is one of my 3-year-old granddaughter's favorites. That led me to do a little research on Mr. Sendak's other books. Being a huge fan of the movie "Labyrinth," this book was an obvious choice. It too is a huge success with my little one, especially since she has a baby sister and can personalize the story. I highly recommend it.

I am a collector of children's books, and I bought this for my collection. The dust jacket was a little frayed on the edges but over all it is a nice copy. I was not a fan of Sendak, but recently I have been studying his work and have developed a great appreciation for him. He wrote so many books that I can't have all of them, but I now have his important trilogy along with several other books he wrote or illustrated. Well satisfied with this dealer.

Beautiful book

If you're looking for more magical Maurice Sendak besides Where the Wild Things Are, this is a wonderful little book. The pictures are plentiful and dreamlike. The language of the writing is also kind of dreamlike and strange. It's a good book for a little girl because the heroine, Ida, is a girl. She takes care of her little baby sibling and rescues her after the goblins snatch her away and leave a changeling in her place. I treasure this book as one of my favorites that I used to read to my daughter when she was little, and it's one of my favorite children's books to give as a gift.

I remember reading this book as a child at primary school. The school one had pages missing from it so I never knew how it ended!

I love the film the labyrinth, which apparently is based on this book. My partner finds the book scary :D and my child loves it, and refers to the baby in the book by our new baby’s name.

It’s a fun nostalgic read for me. Some adults might find it slightly disturbing.
