Beloved guru Ram Dass tells the story of his spiritual awakening and gives you the tools to take control of your life in this “counterculture bible” (The New York Times) featuring powerful guidance on yoga, meditation, and finding your true self.

When
Be Here Now was first published in 1971, it filled a deep spiritual emptiness, launched the ongoing mindfulness revolution, and established Ram Dass as perhaps the preeminent seeker of the twentieth century.

Just ten years earlier, he was known as Professor Richard Alpert. He held appointments in four departments at Harvard University. He published books, drove a Mercedes and regularly vacationed in the Caribbean. By most societal standards, he had achieved great success. . . . And yet he couldn’t escape the feeling that something was missing.

Psilocybin and LSD changed that. During a period of experimentation, Alpert peeled away each layer of his identity, disassociating from himself as a professor, a social cosmopolite, and lastly, as a physical being. Fear turned into exaltation upon the realization that at his truest, he was just his inner-self: a luminous being that he could trust indefinitely and love infinitely.

And thus, a spiritual journey commenced. Alpert headed to India where his guru renamed him Baba Ram Dass—“servant of God.” He was introduced to mindful breathing exercises, hatha yoga, and Eastern philosophy. If he found himself reminiscing or planning, he was reminded to “Be Here Now.” He started upon the path of enlightenment, and has been journeying along it ever since.

Be Here Now is a vehicle for sharing the true message, and a guide to self-determination.

Ram Dass, formerly Dr. Richard Alpert, became a multigenerational spiritual teacher and cultural icon spanning from the 1960s through his peaceful passing at his home on December 22, 2019. His zeitgeist shifting book Be Here Now sparked a watershed of Eastern spiritual traditions and practices to become accessible to a Western audience. His many books include Walking Each Other Home, Polishing the Mirror, Be Love Now, Paths to God, Still Here, and The Only Dance There Is. Ram Dass devoted his life to service, founding the Love Serve Remember Foundation, the Hanuman Foundation, and co-founding the Seva Foundation, Lama Foundation, and the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram in Taos, New Mexico. Spiral-bound Is Worth It
I used to have the paperback copy of this book, but I gave it away 2 years ago to someone who I felt could benefit from it. Throughout those two years, this book has always come up in only the most profound conversations I’ve had with friends and strangers.A couple of weeks ago I had a tattoo appointment, and it was a long one (8 hours). Life has been tough for me for quite a while now and I really didn’t think much words were going to be exchanged during my session. However, while briefly catching up at the beginning of my appointment about how things had been going for me, we ended up having a very long conversation about life, which eventually led us to the topic of healing and spirituality. My tattoo artist shared part of his healing journey with me and his story brought me right back to this book and reminded me of all the healing I had gone through yet forgotten or disregarded.I’m really thankful we had that conversation. I bought a copy for myself and a copy for my tattoo artist as a gift for my last session with him. I think this will be the 4th or 5th time I’ve gifted someone this book!P.S. I am extremely impressed with the spiral-bound version of this book! It is much easier to read those difficult pages that have text printed near the binding. It took a bit longer to receive these compared to the paperback version, but there was no damage to the books/pages — it was definitely worth the wait!

Purchased for my partner who enjoys philosophical discussion and read about Ram Dass in the past. This book takes an interesting twist on the excerpts of Dass’s other books. The art is very interesting and fantastical.

I can't believe it took me this long to read this book, especially considering its similarity with the majority of books I read. I was completely blown away by how mind-bending and honest the book appears to me. "Be Here Now" includes a brief autobiographical introduction from Ram Dass (formerly known as Richard Alpert), a zen koan-like middle passage full of different ways to see reality, a concluding section detailing various methods that one can undertake in his or her spiritual journey, a glossary of terms, and an amazing list of books to read at the end.

The autobiographical section did not impress me as much as I had originally hoped, but that was mainly because I was looking forward to reading the middle passage, with its inspiring artwork and psychedelic calligraphy. I zoomed through the introduction, but I consider it to be a very important section of the book because it really sets the tone and helps the reader to understand how Ram Dass became the person who he was when he wrote the book.

The middle section blew my mind. I don't know what else to say about it. It reminds me of Lao Tzu's "Tao Te Ching" in some way - full of wisdom and a unique way at looking at reality. I couldn't help feeling like the words printed on the page were the truest things I had ever set my eyes upon. Honest in some way that I don't yet understand, but hope to one day.

The third section, with its descriptions of various spiritual practice was at once both a great overview of things I have read about in the past and also an introduction to some new approaches that I may choose to incorporate on my own spiritual journey. This section in particular was really motivating for me and reinvigorates my desire to continue on the path I have already begun.

The glossary of terms does an effective job at explaining the foreign words and concepts that are found throughout the book. It would be extremely beneficial to anyone (including myself) that is not familiar with Sanskrit or traditionally Eastern religious ideas and ways of expressing them.

By far the best part of this book is the section of three lists of other books to read. They are:

1. Books To Hang Out With
2. Books To Visit With Now & Then
3. Books It's Useful To Have Met

I plan on building a larger portion of my To-Read list out of the books that are contained on these lists, and have great faith that they will be eye-opening and helpful on my journey.

"Be Here Now" is without a doubt one of the most impactful and uplifting books I have ever read. Although I found myself confused while reading the majority of the book, I do believe that in time I will come to understand more and more. I would easily recommend this book to everyone I know, and everyone you know too.

This book has simultaneously inspired & carried me through life. It's traveled the globe with me as I keep it bedside.

Amazing as a gift or an airbnb addition for people to easily scope. Deep meanings without having to full on read front to back.the back of the book includes quotes, recipes, stuff on sleep, study, money talks, and straight out life lessons.

Ram Dass was and remains a gem to this planet. His life story compelling. His desire to share knowledge in the way he did always makes me tear up. Gratitude for infinity.

I purchased this book after reading the Walter Issacson biography of Steve Jobs, which stated how impactful the book had been to Jobs. I have to admit I didn't know what to expect, and after receiving the book that notion was reinforced after shuffling through the middle section. I wanted to give it a fair chance anyway so I started to read. The first part of the book tells the story of how Ram Das goes from a Harvard professor to becoming Ram Das and I was immediately sucked into a story that captured my full attention. The second part of the book however really threw me at first. The formatting is odd, and there are parts that are challenging to read as in some places it seems like words are just all over the place and don't really seem to go together (Later I understood that it was derived from pages of his journal, and didn't necessarily have to go together, but could be read as individual pages / notes). In honesty I thought, ok this poor man lost his mind somewhere between the first part and the second part. Being that I had heard so many good things though I continued to read through it. The 3rd section, the Cook Book, immediately captured me again, and as I continued to read I was blown away at how profound it was. So many just pure Gems that I thought wow, this amazing person hasn't lost his mind at all, in fact, he seems to understand, he really gets it, and there were parts that just spoke to me. I actually remember thinking something, then reading about that topic, and then thinking, ok this book is inside my head, It's literally talking about a topic that I was just thinking about. I will read this book again, and again, and I am confident that no matter how many times I read it, I will pull something else out of it each time. Its formatting is a little odd, and if you have flipped through it and thought: "This won't have anything useful in it", I highly encourage you to reconsider. Think of the middle section as a daily read. They are thoughts and deep concepts that can be taken as one-offs for daily reflection, while the Cook Book will give you such depth of knowledge and a peek into his wisdom that it will literally blow your mind!! This book is truly an amazing read!! What a rollercoaster, I don't believe I have ever read anything like it before. Must Read!!

This binding is made by taking a glue-bound book, removing the pages, and punching the holes for the spiral binding. Since some spreads have text right up into the binding, the spiral makes some pages easier to read because they lie flat, but on some pages, the holes go through the text, making it harder to figure out the words. These pages aside, the spiral binding is nicer because the book can open flat.

So very ordinary, but so VERY EARTHY. I have never seen or experienced such a wonderful book, to the eyes this nothing to catch, but still, there is something intriguing about the book, & I MEAN JUST ABOUT THE BOOK.

As about the content, It's A TREASURE MAP that is Coded in a Secret language, only the WORTHY will Decipher it.

Its a Paradox- Its not for Everyone, but it IS for EVERYONE, Its like a Seed that will sprout when YOUR GROUND IS READY.

Have one IF YOU ARE A SEED.

God Bless ALL.
