Remakes and reboots are in the air again. You know, those kinds of movies that everyone complains about because, apparently, Hollywood has no more original ideas anymore? Yeah, those. Well, there is going to be an influx of them for the remainder of this year and into next.

2024 has already seen a Mean Girls reboot; a sequel to the Ghostbusters reboot hit theaters a few weeks ago, and Prime Video gave us an updated version of Road House. As long as we pay to see these films or drive the analytics of them up on the streamers, they're going to keep making them, so just stop watching if it bothers you that much.

We're a third into the year, and around the corner are some more reboots that actually seem to pull a lot of weight. It's interesting how markets fluctuate. 2023 saw a lot of original films succeed quite well for audiences. 2024 (and maybe 2025) definitely looks like another year for remakes and reboots. People will definitely see these titles when they are released, whether you like them or not. So let's dive in.

If you did not grow up in the 1980s, the trailer that was recently released in theaters for The Fall Guy may have confused you. The Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt-starring action comedy is actually a remake of a 1980s show. The film follows a stuntman who springs into action to solve the mystery of a movie star who has disappeared.

The Action Comedy of the Summer

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt give us some of the best dramatic performances of the last twenty years, and they also know how to make us laugh. The Fall Guy was an ABC-produced television show that aired from 1981 to 1986. Lee Majors played Colt Seavers, who Gosling will play in the film version. Both the show and the movie seemed to be similar in tone and seems like a great way to kick off the summer.

Every 20 years, having a Garfield reboot is kind of warranted. The early 2000s saw the release of two Garfield films that were both live-action and animated, and the iconic character was voiced by Bill Murray (a role he would crack a joke about in the film Zombieland). But this summer, The Garfield Movie goes full animation with a new cast of voices to elevate everyone's favorite lasagna-eating cat.

Chris Pratt as Garfield

Chris Pratt is really trying to corner the market by voicing well-known animated characters in movies. Last year, he gave us his take on what an updated Mario would sound like in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This year, he's Garfield. Other acting voice contributions include Nicholas Hoult as Garfield owner Jon Arbuckle, as well as Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames, and Cecily Strong.

The long-talked-about and criticized remake of 1994's The Crow is coming in just a few short months. The tale of soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster, who are brutally murdered one night, and Draven is given a chance to return and seek vengeance on those who wronged him and her. The world of the living and the dead blends in order for him to fix the wrongdoings of the past.

Polarizing, to Say the Least

For many years, Jason Momoa was attached to the title role, but the film could never get off the ground. Now Bill Skarsgard will suit up in the dark clothing and eerie face paint as Eric Draven/The Crow. The trailer does seem intriguing, but many enthusiasts of the original and how amazing it is, while also respecting the legacy of Brandon Lee, who was killed while filming the 1994 classic, have voiced their outrage.

There is a good chance The Crow could be a big box office bomb due to how polarizing the idea of its existence is. Or, people will give it a break; even those who huff and puff about it will still go see it because that's just part of the fandom. We shall see later this year.

Transformers One is expected to hit theaters this September. With no trailer being released as this list is being written, fans are eager to see a new, revamped version of a live-action franchise that has wowed us for nearly two decades. However, we do have some plot and casting details to keep you intrigued until more news becomes apparent about the film.

An Origin Story

From what it sounds like, Transformers One will take us back to the days of Cybertron, when Optimus Prime and Megatron go from being allies to sworn enemies. Michael Bay has handed over the title of director, like he did with Rise of the Beasts, to Josh Cooley.

Since this is an origin story as well as a reboot of the franchise, new voice actors have been brought in, like John Hamm, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, and Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime. Many feel that with Rise of the Beasts slowly not feeling like the other Michael Bay-directed installments, there is a chance this film could give a whole new look to the Autobots and Decepticons.

9 Speak No Evil - September 13, 2024

2022 saw the release of the Danish horror film, Speak No Evil. It's about two families who meet at a mutual friend's wedding, befriend one another, and decide to have a weekend getaway months down the road. Things take a sinister turn for the worse in this bleak horror thriller, which justifies why adults sometimes have their guard up about meeting new people. The film received mixed reactions for its awfully dark ending.

Blumhouse to Produce Speak No Evil American Remake

When it was announced all systems were a go with an American version of the film, horror fans' ears perked up. Director James Watkins has stepped in to direct the American version of Speak No Evil, with Jason Blum and his Blumhouse banner producing. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis star in the film.

When nihilistic horror from overseas is remade in America, it often times loses what made it a hit internationally, so we shall see if the American version of Speak No Evil can rival its original.

8 The Amateur - November, 8th, 2024

This November will see the release of the espionage thriller, The Amateur. It's a film about a CIA cryptographer who convinces the agency he works for to let him go out and hunt down the organization responsible for his wife's murder. The film will be directed by James Hawes, who has a background in directing for television on shows like Black Mirror and Penny Dreadful.

The Amateur Is a Remake of a 1981 Film

Although there is not much to uncover on the internet about the film right now, The Amateur is actually a remake of a 1981 film of the same name. To go a step further, the original film was actually an adaptation of a novel by Robert Littell. Both the film and novel came out the same year. The cast in this remake includes Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, and Laurence Fishburne, to name just a few.

Director
Robert Eggers
Main Genre
Horror

Nosferatu is hailed as one of the first horror films of all time upon its 1922 release. With a few remakes between now and then, we get a much-deserved remake of the silent film classic at the end of the year.

Robert Eggers, who has terrified us in ways that have felt both hyper-real and out of a fever dream, has teased us with some remarkable stills of the movie to hold us over till a trailer drops. Nosferatu is the classic retelling of a Transylvania vampire who stalks a haunted young woman in Germany during the 19th century.

The Perfect Cast for a Horror Film

Robert Eggers sure knows how to create an ensemble for a movie of this magnitude. Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and playing the utterly terrifying Count Orlock is Bill Skarsgard. All the stills of the movie tease Skarsgard's appearance as Count Orlock, as we see his iconic long fingers and long nails but not his face. One can imagine that the film's first trailer will give us a first look.
