Henry Clay's Immediate Family

Lucretia Hart was born on March 18, 1781 in Hagerstown, Maryland and was well educated. In 1794 her father Thomas Hart moved the family to Lexington, Kentucky where she completed her education.  

Lucretia Hart and Henry Clay were married on April 11, 1799 at her parents’ home. Shortly thereafter, Lucretia and Henry moved into the home next door. They lived in that home for about seven years before moving to Ashland around 1807. 

Henry and Lucretia had eleven children. 

  • Henrietta Clay (25 June 1800-4 June 1801)
  • Theodore Wythe Clay (3 July 1802- 5 May, 1870)
  • Thomas Hart Clay (22 September 1803- 8 March 1871)
  • Susan Hart Clay (11 February 1805-18 September 1825)
  • Anne Brown Clay (15 April 1807-10 December 1835)
  • Lucretia Hart Clay (February 1809 – 18 June 1823)
  • Henry Clay, Jr. (10 April 1811 – 23 February 1847)
  • Elizabeth H. Clay (5 July 1813 – 11 August 1825)
  • Laura Clay (16 October 1816 – 5 January 1817)
  • James Brown Clay (9 November 1817 – 26 January 1864)
  • John Morrison Clay (21 February 1821 – 10 August 1887)

Henry and Lucretia were married for 53 years.
