The Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City, will celebrate the installation of Bishop Matthew Heyd as the 17th Bishop of New York, on Saturday, February 10 at 11AM at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street).

The service, comprised of scripture, prayer, and song, will be officiated by The Right Reverend Matthew Foster Heyd. The preacher will be The Reverend Winnie Varghese, Rector, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

The installation will celebrate how the Diocese has faced outward and joined with interfaith, ecumenical, and civic partners to participate in serving New Yorkers. Joining the procession to celebrate this historic moment will be over 200 clergy members of the Episcopal Diocese of New York; leaders and members of the charitable organizations supported by Episcopal Charities that impact the lives of over 1 million people through food pantries, community kitchens, and health, education, and youth programs; and local, national, and international interfaith and civic leaders.

Attending the service, amongst others, will be Bishop Andrew M.L. Dietsche, 16th Bishop of New York; Bishop Paul Egensteiner (Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America); Bishop and Right Honorable Dame Sara Mullally DBE (Bishop of London); The Rev. Adriene Thorne (Senior Minister of The Riverside Church); The Very Rev. Kelly Brown Douglas (Interim President, Episcopal Divinity School); and The Honorable Christine Quinn (President and CEO of Women in Need (WIN)).

A reception for all in attendance will be held in the Cathedral Nave following the service.

The service will also be streamed on the Cathedral’s YouTube channel.

Biography for The Right Reverend Bishop Matthew Foster Heyd

The Right Reverend Matthew Heyd will become the seventeenth bishop of New York on February 10, 2024. Since his consecration as bishop coadjutor in May 2023, Bishop Heyd has worked towards expanding the Episcopal Diocese’s commitment to reparations for slavery, launching its diocesan credit union, and greening its buildings. He has also been a leading voice among a group of religious leaders and housing advocates proposing housing more asylum seekers in their churches.

Among Bishop Heyd’s previous roles are rector of Church of the Heavenly Rest in Manhattan, director of Faith in Action at Trinity Church Wall Street, and founding board chair of the Community Learning School initiative in New York City. He is vice-chair of the Board of Trustees for Episcopal Divinity School.

Bishop Heyd helped launch Episcopal Charities in the Diocese of New York in 1995. He worked with the family of Martin Luther King Jr. on a program to help students celebrate the King National Holiday with service.

Bishop Heyd was a Morehead Scholar and student body president at the University of North Carolina. He holds a Master of Arts in religion summa cum laude from Yale University and a Master of Sacred Theology from The General Theological Seminary.
