One of the many treasures uploaded this week by Bill Matthews on his amazing YT channel is Michael Palin's Comic Roots from 1983 including him listening to The Goon Show with Spike Milligan in a recreation of his childhood front room and then being a joyous fanboy.

I think was of the many quality extras on the Ripping Yarns DVD, along with full Jones/Palin commentary and the chocolate factory thing with Warren Mitchell.

Can't remember if this was on it too
but it's similarly great.

Speaking of great Palin things... (In his diaries, he says the reaction at the table read for this sketch was the most uproarious he'd ever experienced, which says something. Apparently they did this one without rehearsal, and clearly the set was constructed, um, kind of quickly...)

Never seen any of the SNL appearances and this was hilarious, thank you :) Could have been ripped from an episode of [broad american accent] "Python". The final joke -

Spoiler alert
two more minutes with the bats

- was impeccable. So nice to see Palin enjoying himself :)

A pity the sound quality doesn't do it full justice, but that ambulance rant at the end is a real tour de force from Palin. It's practically primal scream therapy.

Digression: apart from the Kenneth Williams one, most of the other Comic Roots episodes seem to have disappeared (eg Les Dawson, Irene Handl), but Alexei Sayle's turned up a couple of years ago:

Gilliam recently set up a Youtube channel and he's planning to post rarities etc up there. I enjoyed this new bit of a documentary on the painting that's the source of the "Monty Python foot"

Yesterday the "It's" man's talk show popped into my head and the memory of it made me smile all day.

Such a wonderful idea. The "It's" man has got off the island (didn't change his rags or have a shave), become famous, got his own talk show (with guests Lulu and Ringo) but he is forever cursed that when he says "it's" credits will appear.
