Witness Me Lyrics

[Verse 1: Jacob Collier]
You tell me you're broken (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Tell me it's over now (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
You say you're done hopin' (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
You tell me all the lights gone out (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Well, maybe you're lost then (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Maybe you're far from home (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
If you only keep walkin' (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
You never will walk alone (Ooh, ooh, ooh)

[Pre-Chorus: Jacob Collier]
'Cause when I'm with you
There's nothin' that I wouldn't do
You're the one that I've waited for
To bring out the best in me (Ooh)
I'm out in the blue
I'm holdin' my hand out to you
You're the one that I've waited for
I'm holdin' onto you

[Chorus: Jacob Collier]
I'm with you (I'm with you)
I'm with you hеre (I'm with you here)
You'rе the light I need (You're the light I need)
In the dark, I see (In the dark, I see)
I'm with you (I'm with you)
I'm with you here (I'm with you here)
You are all I see (You are all I see)
You witness me (Woah, witness me)
[Verse 2: Shawn Mendes, Shawn Mendes & Jacob Collier]
I know we haven't seen each other much (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
I've been gone for the last six months (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
And life isn't easy (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
So call when you need me (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
Dad's sick and your brother's not there (Ooh, ooh, ooh)
More drink 'cause nobody cares
But I believe in you deeply
You know you can lean on me

[Pre-Chorus: Shawn Mendes & Jacob Collier]
I'm here for you (I'm here for you)
In whatever you're goin' through (Nothin' that I wouldn't do)
Whatever it is, you can tell me
I know you'd do the same

[Chorus: Shawn Mendes]
I'm with you (I'm with you)
I'm with you here (I'm with you here)
You're the light I need (You're the light I need)
In the dark, I see (In the dark, I see)
I'm with you (I'm with you)
I'm with you here (I'm with you here)
You are all I see (You are all I see)
You witness me (Oh, woah, woah, witness me)
[Verse 3: Stormzy]
Yeah, we made it further than we thought
Only hearin' that they'd done was when they heard us in the court
We grew up in a place where bloody murder was the sport (Oh, woah, woah, witness me)
I know a few gold medalists (Eeh)
And the thing that they serve, and you can't serve it on a fork (Eeh)
I'd rather it was bailiffs that was bangin' at your door
You can read about it, but you've heard it all before (Oh, woah, woah, witness me)
Have mercy on 'em, Lord
I know You're with them in the storm even though it's hard to see
Had to print you on a shirt 'cause I knew you to a T (Eeh)
In a different situation, I imagine who you'd be (Eeh)
Have mercy on 'em (Oh, woah, witness me), and be with 'em (Oh, woah, witness me)
And if grace doesn't cut it, then Your mercy will suffice
In this cold, dark world, we just need a little light (Ooh)

[Chorus: Shawn Mendes & Jacob Collier, Jacob Collier & Stormzy, Shawn Mendes]
Oh, I'm with you (I'm with you)
I'm with you here (I'm with you here)
You're the light I need (You're the light I need)
In the dark, I see (In the dark, I see)
I'm with you (I'm with you)
I'm with you here (I'm with you here)
You are all I see (You are all I see)
You witness me (Oh, woah, woah, witness me)
You are all I see (You are all I see)
You witness me (Oh, woah, woah, witness me)
[Outro: Jacob Collier]
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
You've been searchin', and searchin', but don't look away
Ooh

Yeah
Ooh

Genius Annotation

“Witness Me” is the fifth single and tenth track from Djesse Vol. 4, the fourth and final installment of Jacob Collier’s quadruple-album project – Djesse – released on November 21st, 2023. The song was first teased in an Instagram post from Kirk Franklin in early 2023, but the first demo (with Shawn Mendes) had existed since Collier’s trip to Los Angeles for the 2021 Grammys. Mendes and Stormzy were first rumoured to be working with Collier when he was seen with the two of them in Los Angeles in late October, filming the music video.

This song breaks a personal record for Collier, as it’s the first of his to have more than two features; conversely, his first song to have two features was I Heard You Singing on Vol. 2.

Genius Answer

Jacob Collier:

The song began its journey back in 2021 when Shawn and I got together to throw some paint in Malibu. We bonded over our love of gospel music, joyous communal gatherings, and creating music for more than ourselves. I worked on that song seed over the coming months and traveled to Arlington, Texas (chez Franklin) to work with Kirk and his unbelievable singers for a day. That session transformed the demo into a fully-fledged song, which I then sent to Stormzy to do his inimitable magic with.

This song means a great deal to me, and its creation has brought me a lot of hope and warmth over the two years of its gestation. In a time where there are countless divisive forces around the world, my hope is that this song can act as a reminder of the power people hold to come together and really see each other, carry each other, and bear witness to life in all its colors.
