  Drifter Guglielmo Spoletini stumbles onto a gangland shooting on a back road and parlays that into the usual dizzying climb up the ladder of Chicago's criminal underbelly, to the eventual chagrin of cold-eyed mob boss Peter Lee Lawrence.

  Interesting as it is to see a Euro-crime take on the standard American mobster movie, that's pretty much where the interest stops. This is by-the-numbers stuff gussied up with some splashes of bright red blood and a little bit of S&M weirdness from Western mainstay Lawrence, who's far and away the best thing about this movie. Spoletini (billed here as William Bogart, in a textbook display of European exploitation subtlety) is dull as dirt in the lead and the rest of the film follows suit.

  The print I watched occasionally switched from English to German dubbing without notice, so that's kinda fun, at least?

  Hätte man die pappigen Sets dieses Gangster-Massakers noch konsequenter runtergeschraubt, wäre man glatt wieder beim Ende von "Dogville" angekommen. Stattdessen ballert's sich einerseits mehrmals um die selbe Straße (inkl. Bank, Kneipe, Bordell, etc.) herum, andererseits lässt man sich mittels einer Handvoll geliehener Oldtimer durch die mediterrane Pampa kutschieren, während auch das restliche production value um 1969 schon überpünktlich an Joe D'Amatos VOX-Pomadenpornos aus den 90ern anknüpft. Peter Lee Lawrence als Alain-Delon-Verschnitt, das sagt schon alles (no offense). Verwegene Kerle mit kalter Schnauze (durchweg angenehm essighaltige B-Genrevisagen wie z.B. Eduardo Fajardo) bleiben dementsprechend als sharp shoo(s)ter bei ihren Leisten, kämpfen bleihaltig um die Grenzen der Stadt und jene eine Frau Blondefotz aus dem Flamingoclub, welche schon im Charleston-Chicago anno 1929 Marilyn…

  for some reason, it’s strange to see a european take on the american prohibition gangster film. entirely watchable on-the-cheap fare. everything feels kinda off, but not distractingly so. 

  features the same stretch of road + painted trees in spain as THE PASSENGER, i think?

  All right little gangster movie. Points. The hot dry area where this was filmed looks nothing like Chicago. Where's the Al Capone type character, isn't he the super obvious big boss? The actors are 100 percent European and look it intrinsically. The main nightclub set has this band playing live Dixieland music that seems really inappropriate for Chicago and it really grates after just a short listen. Banjo and clarinet? No thanks. The main female character is a German blonde who has two moles on her upper lip. I know it's me but I couldn't see anything but those stupid moles and it made me kind of hate her. I know it's wrong but I can't help obsess over stupid shit like that. The English audio was darn scratchy and quietness usually signalled a few blasts of German dialogue coming through.
