The Dr Phillips Center is a great place to see a show of any kind. The concert we went to was held in the Alexis and Jim Pugh acoustic theater and the sound was perfect! The theater is very intimate and the stained glass ceiling is beautiful. Our seats were on the aisle, which was great because the rows of seats are very tightly spaced. People in the center had a hard time being able to get out when they needed. The drinks were expensive but I figured they were. At least they were good. The parking garage is not too far from the venue but you do have to cross a busy street to get there. We didn't encounter any problems with our visit and will be back for more shows in the future.
My wife and I had a nice date night, and saw the Nut Cracker performance. Our seats were amazing, and the show was superb. The drinks were a little pricey, but not out of the norm. Snack options could have been better, but I didn't go there for food.
We went to the dr Phillips center sat. For a concert, seating was great. Don't think there is a bad seat. a fairly new venue. Parking lot close by that provides free shuttle for people needing help. Lovely facility .
This weekend was our first visit to Orlando's new Center for the Performing Arts and we should have gone sooner. Now we have to go back. It is a magnificent venue, a beautiful and hospitable facility. We enjoyed a musical performance in the Walt Disney Theater. The acoustics were as perfect as the seating and comfortable environment. I had been "put off" by concerns about parking. Not to worry, the City Commons parking facility is close by, or use the valet parking.
Thank you for your feedback and for visiting Dr. Phillips Center! We very much appreciate the kind words and look forward to seeing you again soon.
In summary: Very tight seating, enormous crowd cramming through doors, disappointing performance, "majority rules" policy allowing guests to STAND in front of us blocking our view, venue difficult to access in busy downtown, 20 minute intermission with so many people in tight space. NEVER AGAIN!
We love Motown. We go to Las Vegas all the time always looking for Motown options. Our daughter bought these tickets for us with a wonderful seat location as a Christmas gift. We were SO EXCITED about seeing this show.
Getting to the theater in downtown was a challenge. We had prepaid valet parking and circled the blocks many times before we finally found the entrance. Parking went smoothly and we were finally in the venue. Concession prices were high as expected, but not outrageous. Décor was odd - open beams and plumbing like a loft, but ridiculous stainless steel with purple and orange colors. Bathroom was very nice. Extremely limited foyer space and seating for a very large theater. People were crammed in there like sardines waiting for the theater to open.
Only 30 minutes allowed to seat everyone and it just wasn't going to happen. Rows are unbelievably tight; my 6'2" husband's knees touched the seat in front of us. Everyone in the row had to stand as people in the middle seats entered. Huge theater, very crowed and ushers were still seating people 10 or 15 minutes after the show started.
There were two speakers on the stage that blasted into us. The amazing, wonderful band sounded great, but when singers started we could barely hear them. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise as when their microphones were turned up we realized they really weren't doing a very good job. I love the Temptations dance choreography and these guys tried, but it just wasn't what I expected. So the small amount of the show we actually saw was somewhat disappointing.
THEN EVERYONE STARTED STANDING!!! It was so frustrating to be in $80 seats and NOT be able to see the (disappointing) show. Everyone once in a while they would sit down for a minute, then back up again! The row behind us was guests using wheelchairs and walkers, so they generally did not have the option to stand; in courtesy to them, we remained seated. I got up and moved to an empty seat further back, but folks in front kept standing and I couldn't see there, either. Finally my husband got up, came to me and said "let's go!" We left during the Temptations' performance, before intermission and before the Four Tops started.
We spoke to an usher who apologized and directed us to the box office representative. We spoke to him and he offered to find us alternate seats, but unlike the experience in a previous review, it appeared to us that the majority of guest were rudely standing. Box office explained that it is the theater's policy, regarding standing, that "majority rules." They obviously couldn't care less about our experience and have absolutely no consideration whatsoever for guests with disabilities. We left.
I messaged the theater on Facebook the next morning. They read the message at 9:10am, but here is it four days later and they could not even bother to respond.
Thank you for attending The Temptations & The Four Tops concert at the Dr. Phillips Center. We're disappointed that you didn't enjoy the group. As with any entertainment choice, the response from our guests has proven to be varied. We appreciate your patience while we researched other guest opinions. We had many positive comments about the music, the show, and the overall experience. We are grateful for your feedback and will use it to determine the type of performances the Central Florida community would like experience in the future. Thank you for reaching out to us here, and we hope to see you again at Dr. Phillips Center.
We now have a performing arts showplace of which Orlando can truly be proud. Striking architecturally and with pinpoint acoustics, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts makes show going a pleasure. One pet peeve with so many showrooms is cramped rows that necessitate climbing over someone to get to your seat. Planners made seats wider and thoughtfully aired out the legroom so bodies don't have to twist or feet get trampled on when patrons are moving to their seats.
