Restored in 4k but on a Blu-Ray disc
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 25 de noviembre de 2023
Review of the product :
4K Restoration :
For someone like me who doesn’t own either a 4k TV or a 4k blu-ray player, the closest thing to enjoying and appreciating a 4k restoration is when they remaster a movie from a 4k transfer and put it on a regular blu-ray disk, and that’s what this edition of To Catch a Thief is.
When I popped the disk into my ps4 and put it on my HD TV, I was stunned by how vivid and clear the image was. Some frames honestly looked as if they’d been shot a couple of days ago. Granted, a few frames did look a tad unnatural because they looked kind of “AI generated” but those were exceptions and ultimately did not ruin the viewing experience.
I am no expert on this but I think all things considered, the team who worked on this 4k transfer did a fantastic job, and if you have been watching an older blu-ray copy of this movie, I believe it’s worth upgrading because it’s been a couple of days since I watched it and I’m still amazed by how good it looked and the minute details I was able to see in a movie that was shot almost 70 years ago!!
Package :
I like the package of this edition. Both the slipcover and the disc case have the iconic and most widely circulated poster of the movie on the front. It’s nice when you get both of the stars on the front. The covers of the latest Rear Window blu-rays and 4k blu-rays only show Jimmy Stewart and not Grace Kelly, which is such a bummer though I understand that in To Catch a Thief, she plays a female protagonist rather than a supporting character she plays in Rear Window.
The front cover of the slip flips open and shows what I believe must have been one of the original theatrical posters that promoted the film before and during the release of the movie in 1955. I think it is very nice that it’s not one of those typical blu-ray slips that offer nothing but the protection of a disk case.
Speaking of a disc case, this edition has a translucent case instead of one of the mundane blue ones you see everywhere, which is a plus for me because I’m getting sick and tired of the blues.
Special Features :
You can’t expect a lot from the lackluster special features, which they clearly phoned in with but like any other movie, everything you need to know is in the movie.
Review of the movie(no spoiler) :
To Catch a Thief is a 1955 action thriller with an intoxicating dose of romance directed by a legendary auteur, Alfred Hitchcock.
It is one of the most entertaining and most enchanting movies I’ve ever seen and it’s certainly one of my top 10 or 15 favorite movies of all time.
The movie has everything you expect from an archetypal great Hollywood movie, exhilarating action, picturesque scenery, gripping twists and turns, shocking revelations and romantic chemistry between two incredibly good looking people.
That being said, in terms of suspense, it’s definitely not one of the greatest Hitchcock thrillers. The other two films where Hitchcock and Grace Kelly collaborated, Rear Window and Dial M for Murder easily defeat this movie in that department.
The Whodunit part, to me, is the least interesting aspect of this film despite the fact the twist is pretty good unless you are expecting one of those mind blowing plot twists like the one from Witness for the Prosecution.
The most captivating part of the movie is the riveting interactions between Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, their witty banter, their romance, all of it.
Every time I watch this movie, I always wish it was a little longer because I can’t get enough of the two, and To Catch a Thief is one of the movies that transport you to a place you just don’t wanna leave. In the case of this movie, we are talking about a fleeting vicarious vacation on the breathtakingly beautiful French Riviera with dashing and dandy Cary Grant and Grace Kelly with ethereal beauty and disarming charm. That’s the level of pure escapism this movie offers.

A recommander.
