Where do I buy Minecraft for PC and which version should I buy?

I have three kids and we have multiple Windows computers. We usually buy and play games together via Steam. Where exactly do I purchase multiple copies of Minecraft from? Which version of the game should I get since it is new to all of us? I see Minecraft: Dungeons, and other expansions. I am generally confused on what to get. I was thinking just the base game as long as we can play multiplayer together. Thanks for your time.

Java Edition is most likely what yall will want, and you can download and purchase it directly from the minecraft website. make sure you hang on to each of the receipt keys cause if something happens with the associated email address, you'll need the receipt to get access again.

There's 2 versions of the original Minecraft game: Bedrock and Java edition. The main difference is that the original creator of Minecraft made it in Java, but when Microsoft took over, they wanted a cross-platform version so they made Bedrock using the C programming language. Unfortunately if you do buy Bedrock you only get it for the OS device you purchase it for (ie PC, switch, xbox, etc.)
I have heard that they will be giving Java to Bedrock owners and Bedrock to Java owners in the next update, so you likely won't need to worry about that.
Minecraft Dungeons is a new game that is an ARPG. This is not likely what you are looking for.
When you purchase one copy of the game, you are given an account with a username. It is possible to play the game on multiple devices at the same time with one account, but some online functionality won't work without separate accounts. You might be able to get away with one account if you are planning on playing just the 3 of you on the same connection.
There's a deal going on with Xbox gamepass for PC where you can get it for 3 months for $1. This includes all the versions of Minecraft in it as well. You can purchase the $1 subscription and then immediately go into the account and turn off automatic renewals so it wont charge you the full amount after 3 months and instead just cancels.

As for the version you wanna play, it depends, if you're looking for the version you see online most of the time it is minecraft Java edition, or Bedrock edition. I would recommend java as it is the original and is usually more polished, bedrock is meant more for phones and consoles
As for minecraft dungeons, it is just a dungeon crawler game mojang (the developers of minecraft) made based off of minecraft, its a fun game but it's not what most people are looking for

Dungeons is a separate game. The two pc versions are java and Bedrock. There are game mechanic differences but they are very similar. Bedrock is made for cross play. Java is PC only. I would recommend buying copies directly from the microsoft store. You will need separate copies to play together. You may also need to set up Microsoft accounts for all players.

You for sure want either Java or Bedrock. If you friends are already all on bedrock, get that. If not, everyone in your group should get Java edition if only for the ability to mod when desired. And use a proper offhand item. And be able to accurately follow tutorials from most streamers and youtubers.
