"Shadow Builder" is a 1998 supernatural horror film directed by Jamie Dixon. The film is based upon a short story written by the infamous "Dracula" author Bram Stoker. It's original releasing dates back to 1881, a is a story released amongst a grouping of Stoker's other written shorts under the assembled title name of "Under the Sunset". As "Dracula" was released in 1897, the presented story here predates Stoker's most infamous work by 16 years. Similar to "Dracula" the evil entity in the "Shadow Builder" is an ancient sourced demon that has to maintain its separation from the light, at least until it is strong enough to withstand its place there. Naturally, the only way it can achieve this is…
My grandad always said, "You should never judge a book by its cover." And it's for that reason that he lost his job as chair of the British Book Cover Awards panel. I didn't listen and totally saw this film because of the cool front cover! Apparently based on a story by Bram Stoker, Shadow Builder does not do its front cover justice. The story is something to do with a demon trying to take the soul of a young boy. The film is really overlong and badly plotted. It meanders so much to the point where it sometimes becomes difficult to remember what's going on. Michael Rooker stars in a weird role as a foul mouthed "priest" who is…
Michael Rooker plays a priest, armed with twin 9mm cannons, out to protect young Kevin Zegers from Bram Stoker's Shadow Builder, who is not the demon on the poster, but looks and sounds like the Wishmaster dipped in molasses. Generally has the vibes of an Are You Afraid of the Dark? episode (complete with Canadian child casting) mixed with R-rated demon-hunting action. It's standard 1998 DTV fare with a few cool moments and dark cinematography that covers most of the wonky '90s CGI, plus added Needfull Things-brand insanity, like a crucifix striptease. Dreadlocked Tony Todd stops by to smoke (cigars, not weed), listen to reggae, and spout gibberish about the power company stealing his lights.

Based on a work of or invoking the name Bram Stoker
My mum picked up this dvd for me from the local thrift store and has been asking if I had watched it yet. So I gave it a spin today and my answer to her when she asked "How was it?" was "well it never got boring, something was always happening". I didn't mention Michael Rooker or Tony Todd being in this, because that wouldn't mean a thing to her, but it was a nice bonus for me.
Quickie: Meh, I enjoyed parts of it but overall it leaves something more to be desired. I like all the catholic satanical imagisticness and the campy ass church inspired soundtrack though mostly in an ironic way. The editing I didn't really care for. It was so over the top and jarring it just felt unnecessary. The dialogue is extremely cheesy and occasionally makes no sense at all. The VFX are a larf they're so bad and being pg-13 this thing just ends up feeling pretty tame. Definitely not as edgy as it wants to be. Pretty much lackluster in every department on this one. :\ 4/10
August Horror 2020: Horror Hunt #26 (4/31)
Watch a horror movie you know nothing about, based solely on your liking of the poster/cover art.
I remember seeing this movie being sold at my local Blockbuster back in the late 90s when I was 7 or 8 years old. I always wanted to watch it as a kid because the cover art is super cool, but I never had the opportunity to watch it. Seeing it's now available on Tubi (As of 8/12/2020), I thought I might as well check it out. This movie was the perfect amount of stupid fun that I enjoy. Watching this movie made my day.
I never read the story from Bram Stoker, so I can't…
The movie starts off just rite, with goateed rogue priest Michael Rooker wildly firing two laser-sighted guns at a fleeing cloud of demonic black smoke. He's there to take down some kind of nude conspiracy spearheaded by an evil archbishop to conjure a shadow demon, but fails to nail the incorporeal perp which quickly spreads through the town, transforming the population into ax-wielding maniacs. "Factor obscurantis" isn't nearly as intimidating once he becomes a solid monster (he's more Wishmaster than the CURSE OF THE DEMON-looking creature from the poster), but the stakes are suitably raised as Rooker & co. look to shed light on the darkness.
I couldn't help thinking: Rooker, a hero sheriff, some hijinks involving a female radio dispatcher at the…
"God is a butcher boy."
Are you a fan of direct-to-video movies vaguely based on Bram Stoker novels starring Michael Rooker as a pill-popping priestorcist battling primordial demons with laser-sighted pistols and scripture rap battles? Cause if you're not, fuck off.

Tony Todd
This is a movie of it's time. The effects in this movie do not hold up today. Tony Todd plays a very strange character, no one was very likable if i'm going to be honest.
Wouldn't really suggest it to a lot of people.
Exactly what I was wanting out of a movie this morning. I don’t know how much this resembles Bram Stoker’s original story, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say not at all. Shadow Builder does have elements of Stoker’s other works, like its Van Helsing-type character in Michael Rooker’s priest and an emphasis on Christianity, but the movie feels like it’s own thing as well. It isn’t walking in the shadow of Dracula, if you will.
The CGI is horrendous, but its presence diminishes once the demon manifests in human form. The rules of the demon are fast and loose. It’s better not to think too hard about them, honestly. Just buckle yourself in for the…

It's interesting because I haven't read a single Bram Stoker story, I've read Frankenstein, phantom of the Opera, hunchback of Notre Dame, Jeckyll and Hyde, countless Sherlock Holmes stories, and other classic literature. But never any Stoker, I really need to do that soon because I've enjoyed every adaption of his work. My dad would love this movie, growing up he would always pull random DVDs off of the shelf to watch with us and it would always be films in the style Shadowbuilder, I need to ask him if he's seen it. This is pretty much a role-playing game session in film form, whenever I play GURPS stories like this are always told, gives me some ideas for…
