      Moesha: Season 1 Reviews

Exists in a world of teenage girlhood recognizable to almost anyone while never denying its components. No wonder Brandy's so normal. I wish there'd been a Moesha on TV when I was 15 and needed her.

The writers manage to approximate the way that people actually speak. Moesha is not marred by the embarrassing racial assumptions, cliches and gestures that make other sitcoms parodies of themselves.

Television is a medium that cannibalizes itself, so it should come as no surprise that the Great Box has swallowed up Brandy and spit her back out as Moesha, a cloying hybrid of Blossom, Patty Duke and Vanessa Huxtable.

Much of it is pretty silly stuff, but maybe the younger crowd will be more appreciative.

It has no more regard for many of its young characters -- and viewers -- than the cheapest TV comedies. That's a double shame because the show does no justice to the obvious justice to the obvious energy, talent and appeal of its star.

What the show does not manage to do with any freshness is wring real humor out of its core conflict: On one side is the adolescent searching for identity and testing for limits; on the other are parents uncertain about how much freedom to allow.

Cute, if you like cute, and pretty enjoyable.

Moesha isn't a great sitcom, but its heart is usually in the right place, and with a family show, that counts for a lot.

      Full Review | Feb 7, 2024

Overall, the show seems to be making some right moves -- a strong emphasis on family and respect for adults and learning among them.

      Full Review | Feb 7, 2024

There's something embarrassing about this battle of wills between the loving stepmom and the snooty Moesha. Such a family rift is better suited to an analyst's office than a sitcom.

      Full Review | Feb 7, 2024

Anchored by R&B singer Brandy, the first season of this show has portrayed a proud household that's about as close to being an authentic middle-class black family as TV has ever gotten.

      Full Review | Feb 7, 2024

Moesha is painfully short on laughs, plot and chemistry, though viewers should warm up to Brandy as an actor.

      Full Review | Feb 7, 2024

The writing has the smart, freewheeling feel that comes from being sure of itself. It gives the show what this season's parade of "Friends" knockoffs never found: a spark of something original.

The themes -- from experimenting with alcohol to infidelity and pre-marital sex -- are topical, and families could benefit from watching the show together and discussing what happens in each episode.

She's a likable kid, and her supporting cast of girlfriends - especially Countess Vaughn as the boy-crazy Kim - are sassy and full of street talk and slang; cast's chemistry manages to transcend the rather stale storyline.

There are a few weak jokes, but in its substance, look (fly fashions), and sound, this could be a real trendsetter.

      Full Review | Original Score: B+ | May 31, 2019

Smart, fast, and confident, Moesha sets a new standard for kid-friendly family entertainment.
