So does Fantano not like Alanis Morissette?

One of my favorite albums of all time is jagged Little pill because as a young woman it just speaks to me in ways that I’ve never had any other piece of art speak to me (funny enough The same with fetch the Bolt cutters but he gave a seven out of 10 which is insane in my personal opinion)

I’ve always wondered why I don’t see him talk a lot about jagged Little pill when it’s such a monumental album or any stuff Alanis Morissette has put out. Not that his opinion will change how I feel or what I think about her as an artist or the album but I saw something where he thought the deep cuts in the album worth that great when I actually think the exact opposite that the deep cuts of the things that make the album even better along with how great the singles were.

Does anyone know if he doesn’t like her or if he said anything about jagged Little pill in the past? I’m seeing replies to a tweet from like 2012 but it looks like he deleted the tweet. Would really appreciate it!

He doesn't think it's that impressive and usually takes jabs at it whenever he comes across it/someone mentions it. I think the biggest criticism he has of it is that he doesn't thinks a a good amount of the album is "filler"; which I completely disagree with.

I also have it as one of my favorite Rock albums ever (along with FtBC too, which I also think is a 10), as it's SOOO consistent from track to track. Outside of being a guy and being born 2 years after it was even released, the attention to her lyricism in how she perfectly tells her stories with enough emotion to make it captivating yet not too much to where it's off-putting for those not in its "target demographic", makes it impossible to dismiss. Also, every song is phenomenal as well, where the deep cuts are just as gripping as the lead singles.

Last thing!

Because it was such a monumental album ( yet I feel like Alanis Morissette gets kind of forgotten about in a weird way she’s still underrated despite her immense success), I feel like it deserves one of those classic out of 10 reviews that he does for albums of the past. He even did Fiona apple and I love her but likes to pretend Alanis doesn’t exist or that she didn’t have a huge impact or have a great album 😂

Sadly I don’t think I’m gonna get a classic out of 10 review that I really want for this album because it deserves it because it was so groundbreaking and just plainly GOOD! Of course imo

I highly doubt it'll ever get a classic review as it's usually about albums that he loves himself, rather than "objectively" critically respected stuff. I think it doesn't get the respect it probably deserves due to it being a mainstream female album from the 90s, whereas the retrospective praise often goes to those underground/alternative ones that get reassessed due to those subgenres gaining popularity in the following decades. The connotation around music geared FOR women for much of music history was that it was very vapid or intellectually empty compared to male music (when looking at the lyrics of some of those classics, is downright hilarious to even think that, ESPECIALLY in 90s Rock).

I think her music got lumped in with being "generic Pop" that's too "accessible to be compelling" just due to how massive she was at her peak, and partly due to her not matching her effort with her following releases. I think people just dismiss her as a passing fad without really looking deep into her music; which unsurprisingly happens a lot to female artists in male centric music spaces.

Edit: sorry for the long response I didn’t realize how much I wrote until I was done😖😂

Yeah the only thing I’ve seen about him actually saying anything about the album is that he thinks “the deep cuts aren’t good but the main stuff are bangers” When somebody mentioned it was an essential album for them and everyone should own the album in their list of five albums everyone should own sort of video. The vibe I’ve gotten every time someone brings up Alanis Morissette is kind of the same vibe I get when he talks about my beautiful dark twisted fantasy, an album that I’m not even a huge fan of if I’m honest. It really feels like “I don’t get it? why do people like it? ” vibe from him😂

Do you have any other examples of where he may have taken a job edit other than the video I mentioned and the deleted tweet? Just curious.

That critique doesn’t even make sense too because what is “filler “ on an album? Like the album isn’t even that long it’s only like 11 or 12 songs which may be at the time was long but now people make albums with 20+ songs and each song is so meticulously crafted. Obviously I’m biased because I like it but even if I try to look from a third person perspective not a single song on there is filler in the sense where he just seems like they wrote it just a pad out an album. Sounds like perfect and forgiven, wake up and not the doctor or so either emotional and gripping or cleverly written in my opinion.

On the second half of your statement I 100% agree. I was born about 5 years after the album and as a young woman it has hit me in ways I think make the album timeless to being a woman coming of age and going through life in general ….and shit for men too!

I wouldn’t go as far to say as Anthony is misogynistic (as some have claimed after the FTBC eh & SexxyRed great reviews) because I don’t think that in any way shape form or fashion but he does have a weird bias against white women and their femininity or “life as a woman” albums which is kind of a trend I’ve seen (and I only say that because I’m black and I’ve seen him review albums with very similar content from black women and didn’t NEARLY have this sort of reaction to it. He treats the albums from Fiona and Alanis as if they’re pretentious or fake deep ) 😂 Again it’s literally the eye don’t get why people like this so much but he is at the end of the day a guy and I feel like for the bolt cutters is especially female and the deep cuts on jagged Little pill is especially female also. I don’t know….it’s just weird. I hope to be able to ask him one day because in my mind, and the consensus of damn near every music critic from the time period And now (especially in retrospect), it’s one of those hands-down exceptional and groundbreaking albums (kind of like the album I don’t get, my beautiful dark twisted fantasy 😂)

I can't think of any video off the top of my head, but it may have been in the hundreds of those "Hot Takes" videos where it probably said something that made me do a quick eyebrow raise lol.

I also wouldn't say he's misogynistic, but he isn't deeply in love with many of the "great" female centric Alt Rock albums, particularly from the 90s like Last Splash, Live Through This, or Exile on Guyville (a few of my favorites from that period); all which where the feminine experience and perspective are central points of the albums. As long as the songwriting is vivid and honest enough, I personally don't need it to be "relatable" in order for me to love it. As a black dude in my mid 20s, the MAJORITY of Rock music has been out of my "area of experience", so coming across a feminine one is pretty much no different tbh. He may view it differently as I know he often gets called out my a few fan bases whenever he gives albums created by women a "low" as he would often overlook the emotional depth of the lyrics (which could be just a bunch of stans being salty, so I didn't really put any weight to it).

Also, he thinks Courtney Barnett's Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit is a 5, whereas I think it's one of the best Rock albums made in the past 10 years or so. We all just have different viewpoints, no matter how questionable they may be :)

How much do you think he’s going to talk about an album from the last century anyway? (It’s not “monumental” either)

yes, it was. i lived it in real time

Thank you !

It’s sold over 33 million copies (at least), Is one of the best selling albums of all time, is the best selling album from a debut artist like a debut album and is one of the best if not the best selling female album of all time. It’s one of those too but all of this is on the Wikipedia page and the album is literally massive and cultural impact for women in rock and women in music. There’s a reason they keep doing anniversaries for it and it’s a Broadway play. I just don’t think you know much about music history as you think you do

Not to mention the endless amounts of awards including at the time the youngest album of the year winner ever end it had like six or seven singles that were all platinum and one being Diamond I think .

Also I just realized do you even watch Fantano’s channel he does reviews of classic albums all the time he literally just finished a series a few months back where he went decade by decade since the 60s.

And you say from the last century as if it was in the 50s it was literally 1996. You sound incredibly rude and bitter for no reason (and showing you don’t know what you’re talking about at the same time)

u/throwawayjaydawg avatar

lol not everyone has to like everything you like. Grow up.

I literally said that multiple times not only in the comments but also in my original post that you clearly didn’t read. But go off then😂

You’re the one butt hurt because you started talking about a topic you clearly knew nothing about and we’re just factually incorrect

u/throwawayjaydawg avatar

You’re unhinged. You’ve written paragraphs of text for a post that nobody is interested in or interacting with about an artist that hasn’t been relevant since the previous millennium. Get a grip, maybe some meds

Zero upvotes. Nobody wants to talk about Alanis in 2024
