Cumberland High School Reviews

Personally, I have had an adequate experience at Cumberland High School. I feel very prepared for college and will be attending CCRI for my senior year in the Running Start Program. Along with this I have been a varsity athlete since my Freshmen year on the volleyball team and have had an extremely positive experience with the team. Although these experiences have been great, there are plenty of negative encounters at Cumberland as well. For instance every teacher recently just received a smart-board in every classroom that have caused nothing but issues for the teachers and there was originally nothing wrong with the projectors they previously used. Our school spent thousands of dollars on these boards and there have been holes in the gym roof for multiple years now. These holes pour rainwater in constantly throughout the year and damage the floors. There is also, major behavioral issues within the student body and the deans avoid these issues more often than not.
My experience at Cumberland High School has been positive. The large student population provides endless opportunities to meet new people. The strong teacher-student relationships are admirable. However, there is a lack of diversity, which can make me feel out of place as a person of color. The cafeteria food is often flavorless and unappetizing. Increasing diversity and improving the quality of lunch food would enhance the overall high school experience for all students.
Cumberland High School is a decent school, I’ve never felt endangered there or like something bad was going to happen. The halls and cafeteria are usually clean, and the food is good. These are all things that appeal to parents and students. However, there is little to no college readiness other than a meeting at the end of Junior Year. You can request a meeting, but I found my guidance counselor unhelpful in teaching me how to apply for scholarships, when to apply for scholarships, or how to find a college based on financial return, instead of the novelty or aesthetic of the campus. We never went over the process of applying to college, we were only told that it was an option in our classes. Any help given to students is performative. The use of Naviance, a college readiness site, ended in middle school. The high school also advertises CHS pathways, which are ways to graduate with certain credits. It was never mentioned to students who get in for free, only outside students who pay.
