Considering that the CD features the guitar-playing of John Williams, it is no surprise that this dellightful music is performed at a very high level. Williams has been around long enough to be familiar with all the main guitar repertory, so his rather eclectic choices for inclusion provide a good guide to what's worth hearing. A lot of standards are here, but also a few not-so-familar items. The Andrew York offering " Sunburst" was new to me, but I was impressed with its originality and its restless energy as well as its creative artistry. Albéniz's Asturias is very frequently found on disks of Spanish guitar music, even though I believe it was, as was most of Albéniz's msuic, written for the piano originally. "El condor pasa," originally an atmospheric bit of Peruvian folklore was made very popular by a Simon & Garfunkel recording. Jorge Morel's arrangement doesn't retain much of the Peruvian folk atmosphere, however, being a well-crafted, rather classical treatment of the theme. Theodorakis is a bit of a surprise here, as is O'Carolan, but Bach and Scarlatti transcriptions are quite often heard on guitar. Vivaldi gives us another gem of the classical baroque The slow movement of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez is as unforgettable as it is hauntingly lovely. The Argentinian Piazzolla offers us--no surprise--an example of the national dance of his country, a tango, of course.
There is very little, if anything, to criticize about this collection of guitar music, and I recommend it highly to guitar music lovers as well as to all lovers of good music. A loud "bravo!" to John Williams, to his collaborators, and to the composers who created the evocative guitar music found here.
trying to find the title for years & years. The guitar is a very sexy instrument, and this is an excellent album.
