This CD is Sony Classical # SK 89141 "Classic Williams: Romance of the Guitar," released in the year 2000. Its 19 tracks provide a total of 74:27 minutes of music The contents are a very widely varying collection of pieces, played by the well-known English artist John Williams on an instrument made by Greg Smallman. Original recording technologies are not specified, but recording dates suggest that all tracks could be purely digital. Tracks 1, 2, and 7 are new recordings, taken on December 20, 1999; the others are older and some have been released previously. Some tracks are played by Williams solo, and others with orchestra and/or additional artists. The program is:

1 - Romance, a lovely anonymous piece, arranged for guitar with string orchestra
2 - Gabriel Fauré: Pavane, arranged by John Williams for guitar with string orchestra
3 - Andrew York: Sunburst (for solo guitar)
4 - Agustín Barrios: Una limosna por el amor de Dios (La ultima canción)
5 - Isaac Albéniz: Asturias, from Suite española, arranged by John Williams
6 - Erik Satie: Gymnopédie No. 3, arranged by John Williams for guitar with small orchestra
7 - El condor pasa, traditional Peruvian folksong arranged by Jorge Morel
8 - Stanley Myers: Cavatina, from The Deer Hunter, with orchestra
9 - Astor Piazzolla: Verano porteño (Tango), arranged by Benítez
10 - Manuel Ponce: Scherzino mexicano, arranged by Díaz
11 - Leo Brouwer: Berceuse
12 - Antonio Lauro: Natalia (Venezuelan Waltz)
13 - Manuel de Falla: Dance from La vida breve, arranged by Emilio Pujol, played by Williams with guitarist Timothy Kain
14 - Turlough O'Carolan: Planxty Madame Maxwell, arranged by Gerald García
15 - Mikis Theodorakis: Epitafios 3
16 - J. S. Bach: Prelude, from Suite for Lute No. 4 in E Major, arranged by John Williams
17 - Domenico Scarlatti: Sonata in E Major (K. 380, L.23)
18 - Antonio Vivaldi: Allegro, from Trio for Violin, Lute, and Basso Continuo n C Major (RV 82), played with violinist János Rolla abd Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra
19 - Joaquín Rodrigo: Adagio, from Concierto de Aranjuez for Guitar and Orchestra

Considering that the CD features the guitar-playing of John Williams, it is no surprise that this dellightful music is performed at a very high level. Williams has been around long enough to be familiar with all the main guitar repertory, so his rather eclectic choices for inclusion provide a good guide to what's worth hearing. A lot of standards are here, but also a few not-so-familar items. The Andrew York offering " Sunburst" was new to me, but I was impressed with its originality and its restless energy as well as its creative artistry. Albéniz's Asturias is very frequently found on disks of Spanish guitar music, even though I believe it was, as was most of Albéniz's msuic, written for the piano originally. "El condor pasa," originally an atmospheric bit of Peruvian folklore was made very popular by a Simon & Garfunkel recording. Jorge Morel's arrangement doesn't retain much of the Peruvian folk atmosphere, however, being a well-crafted, rather classical treatment of the theme. Theodorakis is a bit of a surprise here, as is O'Carolan, but Bach and Scarlatti transcriptions are quite often heard on guitar. Vivaldi gives us another gem of the classical baroque The slow movement of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez is as unforgettable as it is hauntingly lovely. The Argentinian Piazzolla offers us--no surprise--an example of the national dance of his country, a tango, of course.

There is very little, if anything, to criticize about this collection of guitar music, and I recommend it highly to guitar music lovers as well as to all lovers of good music. A loud "bravo!" to John Williams, to his collaborators, and to the composers who created the evocative guitar music found here.

I heard it on xm satellite radio and wanted to use it as a closing segue for my classical music radio show on WFCF 88.5 FM here in St. Augustine, FL; our station can also be heard world-wide on i-heart radio. I properly give credit to composer & performers with a bit of sidelight information about the piece...(when it was written, where, etc.) This CD was advertised in "very good" condition; and it certainly is. Thanks to Amazon and its network of music sellers.

I really like this CD. I bought it because I have always liked the song Cavatina from the movie the 'The Deer Hunter' which I have always thought was the most romantic song I have ever heard. I have cable music channels and I happened to hear the song: 'Berceuse' and I loved it's romance and playfulness as well, so I bought the whole album and don't have any regrets about it.

Satisfactory/adequate for a pre-owned CD.

Beautiful music. I listen to this in my car and helps me deal with ignorant + bad drivers, because it's soothing to me. This is a very talented guitarist and I wish I had discovered him sooner! Would love to see him in concert.

I absolutely Love this CD. Even though it is one of Williams' older CD's, I think it's his best. I first heard it when we were at a tailgate before a concert. We were out among nature, it was peaceful and quiet. A friend had this CD playing in the background. I had to have it and I got it. It's wonderful background music at home when friends are over for cocktails. Love it!

I'm trying to get more relaxing music to slow me down and this one is great. His guitar is so melodic and beautiful that you can get lost in it and listen to it all day! I first heard of John Williams from the local Boston Classical radio station and this is my first cd of his. Great and I'll probably get another one of his.

I chose this for one reason, it has "Pavane" as one of his pieces. It's a haunting melody, one which I've been
trying to find the title for years & years. The guitar is a very sexy instrument, and this is an excellent album.
