Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 1 Huskies Explode Past DePaul on Wednesday

CHICAGO – The No. 1 UConn men's basketball team (23-2, 13-1 BIG EAST) won its 13th in a row with a 101-65 rout over DePaul (3-21, 0-13 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena. Six Huskies finished in double-figures in the romp, including all five starters.

UConn's 13-game conference winning streak is the longest for a BIG EAST team in league play in nearly 20 years, second only to another Husky streak of 14-straight in the 1995-96 season.

Alex Karaban (Southborough, Mass.) led a balanced Husky attack with 21 points, one of six to finish in double-figures on the day. Stephon Castle (Covington, Ga.) added 15 points and six assists, while Cam Spencer (Davidsonville, Md.) went for 14 points with five rebounds and five assists. Also atop the scoresheet were Jaylin Stewart (Seattle, Wash.) with a career-high 11 points and Donovan Clingan (Bristol, Conn.) and Tristen Newton (El Paso, Texas) each with 10.

How it Happened

After a quiet start, UConn rattled off a 9-0 spurt that pushed its early advantage to 22-7 and forced a DePaul timeout with 11:46 to go in the first half. Later in the frame, a Hassan Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) steal and score pushed the lead to 20 and forced another DPU timeout with the Huskies up 40-20 and 5:23 to go in the half.

Connecticut would take a 52-29 lead into the break, getting 12 points from Karaban and shooting 54.8 percent in the opening stanza. The second half started with more of the same, as a 7-0 run for the Huskies early in the frame gave them their largest lead at 66-37 before a timeout on the floor with 15:32 to play.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Karaban stretched the lead to 72-39 barely a minute later and forced a DePaul timeout. From there the Huskies continued to assert themselves, pushing the lead to as many as 39 in the second stanza of the 36-point victory.
