Clark Atlanta University formed when two independent, historically African-American schools – Atlanta University and Clark College – merged together in 1988. Student athletes can try out for the many Clark Atlanta University Panthers sports teams, which compete in the NCAA Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Many notable people have passed through Clark Atlanta and the two founding schools, including Henry O. Flipper, who became the first African-American man to graduate from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, and civil rights activist and writer W.E.B. DuBois, who taught social work at the university.
