Ben Carson, neurosurgeon, conjoined twins, role model, inner city, reading, poverty, success, hope

As a boy, my mother continued to talk to me about my attitude and began to make an impression.

She didn’t lecture because she was discovering more subtle ways to encourage me. She memorized poems and famous sayings and kept quoting them to me.

Thinking about it now, Mother was incredible, memorizing long poems like Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” She often quoted to me a poem called “You Have Yourself to Blame” — a poem I’ve never been able to find in print. But it’s about people offering excuses for failing to do their best. The bottom line was that we have only ourselves to blame. We create our own destiny by the way we do things. We have to take advantage of opportunities and be responsible for our choices.

Mother stayed on me until I fully grasped that I am the one ultimately responsible for my life. I had to take charge if I wanted to amount to anything.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Gifted Hands by and about Ben Carson, M.D., is the inspiring story of an inner-city kid with poor grades and little motivation, who, at age thirty-three, became director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. Gifted Hands will transplace you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world, and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. In 1987, Dr. Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head -- an extremely complex and delicate operation that was five months of planning and twenty-two hours of actual surgery, involving a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Gifted Hands reveals a man with humility, decency, compassion, courage, and sensitivity who serves as a role model for young people (and everyone else) in need of encouragement to attempt the seemingly impossible and to excel in whatever they attempt. Dr. Carson also describes the key role that his highly intelligent though relatively uneducated mother played in his metamorphosis from an unmotivated ghetto youngster into one of the most respected neurosurgeons in the world.

The story of Dr. Carson is the most inspirational history I have ever read. I devoured this book in three hours, and I am not a speed reader in any sense. Dr. Carson makes you laugh out loud, brings tears to your eyes, and pulls it off in down to earth, easy to read language that engages readers of all levels. This is a book that every young person should read, overflowing with the messages that make the American Dream, which has been elusive to many in recent times, seem absolutely attainable given the right attitude. The tribute to God in this work is incredible, and Dr. Carson makes it very apparent that without the intervention of a loving God, he would not be where he is today, and yet the tribute to God is not accompanied by any attempt to sell religion or convert anyone; the tribute to God is mentioned as a series of matter-of-fact observations on the important presence of God in Dr. Carson's story. Excellent read whether you are religious, atheist, conservative, liberal, whatever. Six stars if that were possible!!! I read this on my way to a PA school interview, and was so thankful to get the reminder that there is hope, especially for the minorities, which is huge message of this book.

Gifted Hands is "the" most inspirational book I have ever read in my life. And that includes six others of Dr. Carson's latest books, along with at least 100 non-fiction and autobiographies of other famous people in history. Dr Carson is an amazing man, and he explains his personal events and achievements in his life beginning at the age eight and continuing through his successful career. He explains what it took to overcome the challenges he faced, and how he came to the decisions he made to do it. Gifted Hands should be read by any adult preparing to have children, and any parent of a child still living at home. The younger a child is taught the principles contained in this book, the better the results will be, and the easier it will be to accomplish. I can only wish I would have been required by my parents to read two books a week like Dr. Ben, instead of out in the backyard playing wiffleball and other kid games with my big brother. After reading Gifted Hands, I couldn't wait to read another one of Dr. Carson's books. The nest one I chose was Think Big. After that, I was addicted to Dr. Carson's books, and followed it with One Nation, America the Beautiful, One Vote, Take the Risk, ending with The Big Picture. At the time of this writing, Dr. Carson is considering running for the U.S. Presidency after an outpouring of encouragement to do so by members of organizations that he is invited to speak in front of. If all of our presidents would have had as much common sense and used as much logic and wisdom in their decisions, our country would be in a much greater state than it is right now. Financially and morally. We can only pray that enough voters find out about him and what he stands for before the primaries in the coming election to get him to the big stage. If so, the U.S. can begin our recovery with the greatest chance of succeeding. I recommend everyone that reads this, to read not only Gifted Hand to find out what Dr. Carson is all about, but to read One Nation and America the Beautiful to find out what Dr. Carson can do for our country. Then read One Vote to find out what you can do to help save our country. God bless all of you, and The United States of America.

I absolutely loved Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story! This book was so inspiring and truly shows the power of perseverance and dedication. Ben Carson's journey from growing up in poverty to becoming a renowned neurosurgeon is truly remarkable. His story is one of hard work, faith, and never giving up on your dreams. I couldn't put this book down and found myself feeling motivated and inspired after reading it. I highly recommend Gifted Hands to anyone looking for a powerful and uplifting read.

I really enjoyed the stories he shared about saving those children. I’m fascinated by the brain given the fact that I’ve had my own ordeal with blood clots in my brain. I appreciate his level of detail describing the parts of the brain and various types of procedures and surgeries. I am also moved by his undying faith and devotion to God.

I loved the way his single mother raised him in spite of challenges in her own life. The discipline of reading which she instilled in her children and the keen interest she showed in the studies of her children. The diligence and commitment of Dr Carson to his studies in college and in the preparations for his surgeries is awesome. His deep faith in the Lord Jesus and his trust in God is a great example to all people, especially to youngsters. This book will inspire you and help you to overcome challenges in your life.

I bought this book a month or so ago but have only just got around to reading it. It's not that big a book but that makes no difference. This was probably my favourite read of 2018 and its one of those books that I wished I had read many years ago when I was a young lad finding my way in this world. The advice Dr Carson gives are gems and the book is full of inspirations.
