‘Mothers’ Instinct’ Trailer: First Look At Thriller Starring Jessica Chastain & Anne Hathaway 

Here’s your first look at Mothers’ Instinct, the upcoming thriller starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway. 

Billed as an “edge-of-your-seat thriller,” the pic follows two best friends and neighbors whose perfect lives in ‘60s suburbia are shattered by a tragic accident involving one of their children. The story follows Alice (Chastain) and Céline (Hathaway) as their sisterly bond is gradually undermined by guilt and paranoia and a gripping battle of wills develops, revealing the darker side of maternal love.

French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme makes his directorial debut with the film, which also stars Anders Danielsen Lie (The Worst Person in the World) and Josh Charles (The Good Wife) and is based on the book Mothers’ Instinct: A Novel of Suspense by Barbara Abel. The screenplay was written by Sarah Conradt.

Hathaway and Chastain serve as producers on the pic alongside Chastain’s partner Kelly Carmichael under their Freckle Films banner. Neon is releasing stateside, while StudioCanal is releasing in the UK. 

Discussing the feature early last year, Chastain compared the film to Robert Aldrich’s 1962 feature What Ever Happened to Baby Jane.

“Annie and I, have a lot of fun in that movie. And it’s a throwback to another…I like to think of it like a little bit of ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?‘” told Indiewire. 

She added: “Chastain continued, “Of course, it’s a different kind of film, but it’s this idea of these two actresses coming together and playing this…the tension I think is very interesting. Thank god Annie and I love each other, so it’s a little different than that experience.”
