Like Abba, the New Seekers were a mainstream seventies pop group featuring two female singers, one of whom was blonde. Also like Abba, they enhanced their reputation as a result of competing in the Eurovision song contest, but that's where the similarities end. While Abba relied almost exclusively on their female singers to provide the vocals, only occasionally featuring one of the men as a lead vocalist, the men in the New Seekers were good singers who got plenty of chances to show it. And while Abba wrote all their own material apart from one medley, the New Seekers were quite happy to record songs from a variety of sources although they also recorded original material including songs written by members of the group.
Keith Potger, originally a member of the Seekers, formed the group but this time he was content to limit himself to being the manager. Eve Graham and Marty Kristian were founder members and remained with the group throughout their hit-making days. Three other founder members (Sally Graham, Chris Barrington and Laurie Hearh) quit before the group had really established themselves although they actually participated in the recording of a few tracks. Lyn Paul, Peter Doyle and Paul Layton replaced them and, with Eve and Marty, became the most familiar line-up. Peter Doyle was the first to quit (in 1973) being replaced by Peter Oliver. The group disbanded in 1974 but re-formed two years later as a foursome without Lyn Paul, who had gone solo, and with Danny Finn replacing Peter Oliver. That line-up recorded two albums that between them included three minor UK hits (I wanna go back, It's so nice to have you home, Anthem one day in every week). This music focuses exclusively on the music recorded up to 1974 but you can find most of their later music on a different compilation,
Flashback: The Best of the New Seekers
, that I've also reviewed. Since then, a comprehensive collection of their later material
Together Again/Anthem
has been released but I haven't heard that.
Here you can find all their classic hits including I'd like to teach the world to sing, Beg steal or borrow (their selected Eurovision entry), Never ending song of love (a Delaney and Bonnie song), Circles (a Harry Chapin song), You won't find another fool like me and I get a little sentimental over you. The group recorded six songs as possible Eurovision entrires and they're all here, the five not selected being One by one, Songs of praise, Out on the edge of beyond, Sing out and Why can't we all get together? The other tracks include covers of Melanie songs (Look what they've done to my song Ma, Nickel song, Beautiful people), the Beatles (Something), Neil Young (Dance dance dance), the Move (Blackberry Way), Bread (Look what you've done), Todd Rundgren (I saw the light), Neil Diamond (Song sung blue), Fleetwoods (Come softly to me), Dusty Springfield (Goin' back), the Who (a meddley of Pinball wizard / See me feel me), Carole King (Beautiful) and the traditional Morning has broken, possibly inspired by the Cat Stevens hit version. The song Evergreen is, of course, not a cover of the Barbra Streisand classic, which came later in the seventies anyway, but a completely different song that you may know by its more familiar title, How I love them old songs. Apart from all those familiar songs, there are some other gems here, my favorite among the obscurities being Jean's little street cafe.
With impeccable harmonies from five talented singers, this double CD shows what a brilliant group the New Seekers really were in their heyday.

Hier endlich ein umfassender Sampler der die erfolgreichsten Jahre der britischen Top-Band (14 UK Chart Hits) New Seekers portraitiert. Ausser ihrem Eurovisions-Hit BEG, STEAL OR BORROW (2.

Beautiful People, Beautiful Music!
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 12. Juni 2011
I have fallen in love with the New Seekers in the last year, and don't regret it at all. They had a few minor hits here in the US, but stateside obscurity has never stopped me from listening to anybody's music! Often compared with Swedish group ABBA, I have to say I find the New Seekers less polished and more refreshingly honest with their quintet harmonies. Mind you, I love ABBA, but this group had more style and edge, whether due to Keith Potger's guiding hand or not.
Let's face it; this is a great collection of their hits and then some. Melanie Safka covers and "I'd Like to Teach the World" aside, there is plenty of good material here, deftly handled by five strong vocalists and excellent musical arrangements. I got into this lineup mostly due to an old single on our jukebox called "You'll Never Find Another Fool Like Me," and it escalated from there. Chock full of great hits that never completely made it here, I was more than pleased to hear this compilation feature more work from the male members of the group. Everyone knows Lyn Paul and Eve Graham were the two major vocalists to front most of the NS hits, but it was Peter Doyle's voice I fell in love with. What a gorgeous, soulful instrument he owned! Not only that, but he wrote "Move Me Lord" and the stunningly beautiful "I Can Say You're Beautiful," both included on this anthology.
Other great pieces here--if you're not into collecting all the group's albums--are an early piece called "It's a Beautiful Day," "Blackberry Way," Lyn's beautifully phrased performance on "Ain't Love Easy," funny and touching "When I Was Small" sung by both Peter and Lyn, Eve Graham on charming "Jean's Little Street Cafe'," "Captain Stormy," Peter's passionate performance on "Holy Rollin'," and the uplifting "Somebody Somewhere."
Some people say ABBA killed off this group's potential. I can't say because I was a little girl back then, but I know I don't have to choose. Both units are great in their own rite, but there is just something more appealing and tangible about the New Seekers. I'm glad I came on board for this ride, because this group is a pleasant way to go with their optimistic outlook and their wonderful layered harmonies. This collection is more than worth it for newcomers to check out. Also, may the late Peter Doyle rest in peace. We've lost another wonderful, underrated vocalist way too soon.

Simply The Best: a unique collection from a unique group
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 21. Februar 2006
Of all the New Seeker cds available (and there are several greatest hits type compilations out there), this is by far the best. With 56 tracks carefully selected from the group's back catalogue by a life long fan, this 2 disc set offers great value for money.
The now familiar hits are all here but it's the album cuts that have made it onto cd for the first time that make this compilation truly special.
Whether tackling covers of tracks including Carole King's 'Beautiful' and Todd Rundgren's 'I Saw The Light' or lending their perfect harmonies to songs such as the dreamy 'Captain Stormy' and upbeat 'Out On The Edge Of Beyond', there is no doubt that this 5 piece created their own distinct sound which still seems as fresh today as it did 30 years ago.
Three guys and two girls that looked great and could cut it live too..... now that is something new.

Not before time!!!
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 8. Februar 2006
Wow! That list of tracks sent my mind winging back to 1970 and memories of albums that were treasured for years. Albums such as 'Beautiful People', 'New Colours', 'We'd Like To Teach The World To Sing', 'New Seekers' and 'Now' are represented here and there are even a few tracks from 'Together' for good measure. It has taken thirty years for someone to finally realise that these albums deserve to be recorded onto CDs and thank heavens it has finally happened. Now if those responsible for this album could please see their way to giving the same treatment to the complete albums 'Together', 'Farewell Album', 'Together Again' and 'Anthem' there will be a lot of ecstatic New Seekers fans!!

Mixed Bag
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 20. April 2011
This is a good compilation but I just have a feeling it could have been better. For instance the absence of Day By Day - a minor classic from Circles - and the presence of several dreary Eurovision numbers persuades me that the CDs were not designed to be the very best of the New Seekers' output for that period. However, Roy Wood's Eurovision entry, Songs of Praise, is rightly included - it is a great gospel song and did not deserve its last place in the UK contest !

Wonderful CD but unfortunately had to send back as I already purchased this without realising I already bought this CD
