Rip Porter (Barry Pepper) has just been released from prison and reunited with his wife Wendy (Mira Sorvino), who confesses to him that she had his son and put the boy up for adoption while Rip was away. Rip, who had not given consent, decides to seek custody, overturning the lives of Jack and Molly Campbell (Cole Hauser and Kate Levering) and their beloved son Joey (Maxwell Perry Cotton, giving a remarkable performance). The plot doesn't express the movie's power; the emotional impact comes from the vivid, lived-in performances and attention to detail. When Joey comes to visit the Porters for the first time as part of an acclimation procedure, the scene is a fusion of hope, fear, and awkwardness as the Porters realize the complexity of making a family with a 6-year-old boy. As the Campbells grow more stricken by their impending loss, they pursue a rash solution; this could have turned into melodrama, but again, the movie's thoughtfulness keeps it from being manipulative. When tears come, Like Dandelion Dust has earned them. It's based on a Christian novel, but the film has no religious agenda. The extras are also engaging, including interviews with the book's author and one of the movie's producers about their own adoption experiences and an outstanding commentary track from director Jon Gunn and two producers, who discuss the film's production with humor and insight. I loved this little movie. I had never heard of it and saw it in the grocery rental and gave it a try. What a sweet delightful movie! The acting is good, the plot well created and plausible . At times a bit heart-wrenching but it all comes clean in the laundry to so to speak. It is a very sweet reminder of what people will do for their children, putting them first as it should be done. If you want a well crafted little movie with no violence, no horrendous bad language (which seems to permeate a lot of newer movies) this is for you. A gentle family movie.

Like Dandelion Dust  This is an excellent dramatic movie (in my opinion and understanding). This is what a Christian film should be like - dealing with real life, difficult as it may be, and yet showing and displaying the love and grace of God even in the most subtle of ways. Sometimes, life can place people in such difficult situations, that it looks like whichever way they choose someone will lose and lose badly, and this film shows it and yet it is able to signify the divine and leaves an excellent redemptive moment. This film is a gem. Beautiful and excellent.

Because I read the book before seeing the movie, I was a little disappointed that some of the facts covered in the book were not included in the movie. The details of the Adoptive parents overall plan to make sure they kept their son could have been included. Understanding the intricacies of how the plans started to come together would have been very interesting as it did not just include the mission trip with the church. I enjoyed the movie and will share/recommend it to my friends. The book's writer has become my favorite author. She has the knack of bringing fiction to life. The way she mixes the story line with the reality we can personally experience is outstanding, Even though the movie didn't include a lot of her detail, it was well done.

I really enjoyed this movie. The story line was great and acting was amazing. Just like so many other books made into movies this one really missed an opportunity to actually be like the wonderful book that was made. I was looking forward to see the message of the book be displayed in the movie. The message of trusting in God, but it was really only mentioned a few times and in a song at the end of the movie. But, I did enjoy the movie and would with out a doubt recommend it. I wish the people who made the Love Dare movie would make a version of this.

"Wie Pusteblumenstaub" würde im Deutschen die wortgetreue, etwas schwülstige Übersetzung des englischen Titels dieses gänzlich unprätenziösen Filmdramas lauten. Inzwischen wird dieser Film auch unter dem Titel '' Wie ein Staubkorn im Wind '' vertrieben. Hinter beiden Titeln verbirgt sich die eindringlich und unglaublich berührend geschilderte Geschichte einer Adoption und ihrer Folgen. Diese erfolgte kurz nach der Geburt des Kindes, wird nun aber wegen eines dabei seinerzeit unterlaufenen Rechtsfehlers für ungültig erklärt. Man zwingt damit den mittlerweile schon sechsjährigen Joey, zu seinen leiblichen Eltern zurückzukehren. Eine Entscheidung, die nicht nur dem Kind selbst, sondern auch den beiden, in die Angelegenheit verwickelten Ehepaaren in Folge schmerzhafte Bewährungsproben auferlegt.

Joey wird zunächst an verschiedenen Wochenenden "zur Probe" zu seinen leiblichen Eltern geschickt, um diese kennenzulernen und damit das Kind und die leiblichen Eltern Wendy und Rip (Mira Sorvino und Barry Pepper) sich einander annähern können. Der Adoptivvater (Cole Hauser) akzeptiert diese Regelung nicht, versucht zunächst, juristisch Einfluss zu nehmen und so den Verlust des Kindes zu verhindern. Da dies misslingt, begeht er einen fatalen Fehler: Er missachtet die Adoptionsauflagen, fährt nach Ohio und bietet Rip eine hohe Summe Geld, um seinen Adoptivsohn freizukaufen. Die Gesamtsituation verschärft sich dadurch erheblich, denn der alkoholkranke Rip wird, zutiefst gekränkt durch das gemachte Angebot, rückfällig. Das Drama nimmt seinen weiteren Verlauf.

Der Film erzählt diese Geschichte ohne Schnörkel und unaufgeregt, aber mit akzentuierter Anteilnahme. Denn er bleibt so nah bei seinen Figuren, die alle das Bestmögliche wollen und auch meinen, dies zu tun und dabei dennoch vor Fehlern nicht gefeit sind, sodass man die aus der Grundsituation herrührende Schmerzhaftigkeit für die Beteiligten zu jedem Zeitpunkt mitempfinden kann. Dem Zuschauer wird dabei in eindringlicher Weise deutlich gemacht, auf welchem dünnen Eis alle Beteiligten in dieser Angelegenheit gehen. Der Film urteilt und verurteilt nicht, und als Zuschauer ist man geneigt, für alle Seiten Verständnis und Sympathien zu entwickeln. In seiner Darstellung bleibt der Film dabei zutiefst menschlich, vermeidet und erspart den Zuschauern ebenso möglich gewesene Gewaltdarstellungen und überhaupt jegliche Art von Effekthascherei. Dieser Umstand verleiht dem Film einen ausgesprochen warmherzigen Charakter, und die Geschichte bleibt auch in der zweiten Hälfte weiterhin glaubwürdig, wenn sich die Handlung etwas abenteuerlich entwickelt. Auch wird vermieden, die beiden Parteien am Ende als Gewinner und Verlierer bzw. als Sieger und Besiegte zu brandmarken. Das Ende erweist sich als zu Tränen rührend ergreifend, bleibt für meine Begriffe dabei aber dennoch frei von Sentimentalität und Kitsch.

Kritisch wurde an anderer Stelle angemerkt, dass der Film möglicherweise eine Wertung zugunsten der reichen Adoptiveltern vornähme und sich somit gegen die leiblichen Eltern wenden würde. Man kann dies so sehen, doch halte ich diese Sichtweise für etwas vordergründig. Bedauerlicherweise leistet die letzte Filmszene während des Abspanns diesem Eindruck dann doch Vorschub und wäre vielleicht besser entfallen. Doch sollte dies nicht dem gesamten Film angelastet werden. Denn insgesamt fällt positiv auf, dass der Reichtum der Adoptiveltern nicht demonstrativ oder unangemessen ausgestellt bzw. als besonderer Vorteil im Umgang mit den Gegebenheiten charakterisiert wird. Vielmehr werden auch Jack und Molly als Menschen gezeigt, die in der Angelegenheit ebenso Gefangene ihrer Gefühle und dabei in ihrer Haltung und ihrem Handeln den materiell schlechter gestellten Wendy und Rip keinesfalls überlegen sind.

Das thematisch sehr behutsam gestaltete Drehbuch, gerade aber die beeindruckenden und meines Erachtens herausragenden Darstellerleistungen von Mira Sorvino und Barry Pepper tragen wesentlich dazu bei, dass Wendy und Rip als leibliche Eltern nicht zu Klischeefiguren eines "sozialen Prekariats" abgewertet, sondern in erster Linie als Menschen gezeigt werden, die vor einem inzwischen größeren Erfahrungshintergrund frühere, in ihrem Leben gemachte Fehler nun korrigieren wollen und dabei Stabilität in einer Beziehung mit Kind, ihrem Kind, suchen. - Möglicherweise hat bisher der etwas sperrige, auf die Handlung wenig Bezug nehmende englische Titel einen größeren Erfolg im deutschen Sprachraum bisher verhindert. Ich hoffe daher, für diesen Film eine Lanze brechen zu können, sodass er zukünftig eine größere Verbreitung findet und weitere Zuschauer ähnlich begeistern kann wie mich.

Auf der Produktseite zu diesem Film wird auf andere Filme mit einer explizit christlichen Thematik hingewiesen. Angemerkt sei, dass dieser Film hier eigentlich nicht in diesen Kontext passt. In der Buchvorlage " Like Dandelion Dust " kommt ein christlicher Impetus wesentlich bedeutsamer zum Tragen, in der Filmfassung findet das Thema Religion dagegen nur einmal am Rande Erwähnung. - Zur Menüausstattung der DVD: Das Sprachmenü beinhaltet Deutsch und Englisch, desgleichen bei den Untertiteln. Die Extras umfassen entfallene Szenen sowie ein Interview mit der Autorin der Romanvorlage, Karen Kingsbury.
