Gryphons Wrap up Penultimate Game of 2024 on the Road at Old Westbury

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team fell in both ends of a Friday afternoon rescheduled doubleheader to the Panthers of Old Westbury. Game one saw the hosts take a 14-0 victory while a closer 10-1 score followed in the nightcap. The Gryphons will look ahead to Saturday, May 4th as they wrap up their 2024 season with a matchup against the Knights of Mount Saint Mary. The Gryphons will celebrate senior day prior to the contest with a brief ceremony.

Top Performers
  • Anna Brand drove in the team's lone run after reaching on an error by the Panthers
  • Kyra Johnsen scored the team's only run after tripling in the fourth inning of game two
  • Kristin Vargas led off game one with a hit but was stranded on base

How it Happened

SLC senior Kristin Vargas opened the first game of the night with a hit, but it would be one of just two SLC hits in the contest. After going down in order in the remainder of the first, the Panthers struck early in the bottom half of the inning, putting up five runs on five hits, with three stolen bases helping the hosts get out to their early lead. The second innings saw the OW bats come alive once again, scoring seven more runs, including an inside-the-park grand slam to give the hosts a 12-0 advantage. Two more scores in the third inning would give OW a 14-0 lead and the SLC bats would go quietly as the Panthers claimed a shutout victory. Game two saw the Panthers jump ahead in the first two innings once again, with nine runs in the first two frames asserting their lead early in the contest. After a quick third inning for both sides, the Gryphons threatened to put up a score after Shirin Pechefsky reached on an error and Johnsen tripled. Pechefsky would be thrown out at home on the play as the Panthers kept the Gryphons off the board, but Brand would reach on an error in the following at-bat, driving in Johnsen and putting SLC on the board. The Gryphons would go down quietly for the remainder of the contest and an RBI double by the Panthers would bring around the final run of the contest, giving OW a 10-1 victory.
