Whether you are a binge-watcher or a casual fanatic, Netflix has a full house of exclusives stacked for 2023 to keep you entertained at all times. Perhaps the most anticipated of them all is Chris Hemsworth‘s Extraction 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 2020’s action thriller, which now has a set-in-stone release date of June 16, 2023. The streaming giant announced the news via its in-house Tudum blog, charting all the movies slated to hit the service this year.
After a long hiatus, Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake and crew will soon be back for another round of pulse-pounding action with Extraction 2. Both the movies draw inspiration from Ande Parks’ 2014 graphic novel ‘Ciudad,’ which included a story from Parks and Joe & Anthony Russo, with illustrations by Fernando León González.
Netflix’s Extraction tells the story of Tyler Rake, an ex-Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) operator turned black-market mercenary tasked with a contract to bring the kidnapped son of an Indian drug lord back to safety. However, the rescue mission turns out to be a pretty tough nut for Tyler. The movie ends with a badly wounded Tyler falling into a river after returning the kid safe and sound.
But as we all know now, the story doesn’t end here for our badass mercenary. Extraction 2 will pick up from where we last saw Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, who appears all geared up for another deadly mission. The official description for the upcoming sequel reads: “After barely surviving the events of the first movie, Rake is back as the Australian black ops mercenary, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.”
Besides the release date, Netflix even shared a brand-new still from Extraction 2, which reveals Hemsworth and his co-star Tinatin Dalakishvili in the middle of a prison firefight. While talking about the film’s action and fights, the 39-year-old Aussie actor revealed that Extraction’s sequel has, “the most detailed and exhausting fight training” he’s “ever been a part of.”
That says a lot considering the actor has done quite a lot of action for Marvel movies portraying the God of Thunder. But Hemsworth humbly and respectfully added that both production styles come with their fair share of advantages.
“There’s something so satisfying about that,” Hemsworth added. “Not to take anything away from the special-effects-filled sort of Marvel film, but you have a lot of help in post-production there. Obviously, I can’t fly, so they help through me that. Whereas in this film, the action is grounded in reality, and so much of it is on camera. So, it’s a different energy, and the preparation is a lot more extensive.”
Extraction was packed with great action sequences, fistfights and car chases that not only felt real but also thought out and well executed. And we expect the same with the upcoming follow-up. Sam Hargrave, who made his directorial debut with Extraction is back on director duty. Joe Russo has returned to write the script for the upcoming sequel. Hemsworth and the Russo brothers will be producing the whole affair via their AGBO production company.
Alongside the Russo brothers and Hemsworth, Hargrave, Mike Larocca, Angela Otstot, Patrick Newall, Eric Gitter, as well as Peter Schwerin will be producing the sequel. Benjamin Grayson, Steve Scavelli, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, and Jake Aust will serve as the executive producers of Extraction 2. On the cast side of things, Hemsworth will be joined by Tinatin Dalakishvili as his co-star, while Golshifteh Farahani will be reprising her role as Nik Khan from the first movie.
