Charlotte Pence

December 16, 1929 - April 20, 2024

SARTON, WV – Charlotte Erica Graham Pence, age 94, of Sarton, WV, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Peyton Hospice House. She was born December 16, 1929, in Douglas, GA. She was raised in Savannah, GA, by her now deceased parents, Bill and Marion Ruth Graham.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millard B. Pence; two daughters, Patricia Sims (Delbert) and Penny Stover (Harry); brothers, Frank Graham and Edwin Carrol (Bud) Graham; and sisters, Eloise Moore and Clarice Lynch.

She is survived by one son, Millard B. Pence Jr. (Cheryl) of King, NC; two daughters, Linda Kendrick (Reid) of Kernersville, NC, and Connie Dunbar (Donald) of Sarton, WV; one sister, Martha Flyte of Savannah, GA; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Charlotte was married at age 16 to Millard and came to the rural area of Sarton, WV, not knowing what to expect. She adapted well and learned to love West Virginia as her home. She was a homemaker most of her younger years, then worked outside the home for a while.

She attended the Mt. Alexander United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was president of the United Methodist Women for many years. She also was a lay speaker. Her hobbies included sewing, dabbling in painting, wood crafts, and other forms of crafting. She loved to plant flowers on her front porch to look at and attract hummingbirds.

Charlotte loved going with her husband when his gospel quartet went to sing at various churches and events. Additionally, she was a member of the Red Hats for a few years.

In lieu of flowers, Charlotte requested that donations be made to the Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV (1265 Maplewood Ave, Lewisburg, WV 24901).

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV, with Pastor Terry Utterback officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Alexander Church Cemetery in Sarton, WV. Visitation will be held from 1:00PM until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
