Arrowverse star Grant Gustin discusses his acting future following DC Universe rumors that cropped up about him being rumored to play The Flash again, after a DM conversation with James Gunn. The DCEU movie timeline is over, and the Arrowverse will officially be finished by the end of the year, with Superman & Lois season 4 wrapping up the franchise. However, one established DC actor many are hoping to see back in Gunn's DC Universe is Gustin, nearly a year after he finished his decade-long gig of playing Barry Allen on The Flash.

In an interview with Men's Health, the Arrowverse expanded on the news from a few weeks ago about Gustin having a talk with Gunn over social media, which fueled many rumors about him potentially coming back as The Flash for the DC Universe. While elaborating more on how he isn't in a rush to suit up again, Gustin shared the following:

Men's Health: Are the doors closed for any characters you’ve played before? Is signing a multi-year contract too much of a commitment now with other projects you’re looking to play in the future? I know every outlet is picking up on your innocent DMs with James Gunn.

Grant Gustin: Look, there are no doors right now that are slammed shut for me in any capacity. And that's why I said what I said about James Gunn. I love the Guardians movies, I love what he's done, but the soundbite that's getting picked up everywhere…

Men's Health: It was talking as a fan about Superman.

Grant Gustin: Yeah. I fell in love with Superman because of Christopher Reeve. I loved those movies as a kid, and have remained a Superman fan my whole life because of those movies. When Brandon Routh was Superman in Superman Returns, I was 16, and I had just gotten my driver's license. I drove to the midnight premiere to see him, with Superman insignias on my car in chalk.

I don't know if he was already following me or not, but I just DMed him and said, 'I can't wait to see what you do with that.' So he just hit me back up and then, yeah, he said he thought I was talented and said that he'd love to work with me someday, which is a very general nice thing to say.

Men's Health: There was no contract, I’m guessing.

Grant Gustin: Yeah, that did not happen. [And] I don't know what's next in my career. I have a family; I have a second kid on the way. I have stuff to take care of.

While Grant Gustin didn't show up in The Flash movie, the Arrowverse Barry Allen outdid some of Ezra Miller's moments as Barry in his series.

How Grant Gustin Could Fit Into James Gunn's DC Universe

Even though it may not happen in the foreseeable future, there are a number of options for Gustin if he were to appear in Gunn's DC Universe. One of the biggest concepts in The Flash mythology is multiverse travel, as various speedsters have the ability to jump from one universe to another. If Gunn really wanted to have Gustin back as his main version of The Flash, the actor could take part in a multiverse crossover arc where the DC Universe and Arrowverse get to cross paths.

Gustin's Barry could, in a fun way, serve as one-half of a Flash of Two Worlds adaptation, especially if it is to cross paths with whoever plays the Scarlet Speedster in the DC Universe. Another scenario that could be worth exploring is Gustin taking on a legacy role, perhaps as a young Jay Garrick, one of the many Flashes in the comics. It would be similar to how John Wesley Shipp, who had his own The Flash TV show in the 1990s, joined the Arrowverse in multiple roles, including playing Jay.

Given that Gunn and Gustin are fans of each other, it wouldn't be surprising if they worked together at some point in the DC Universe. For now, DC Studios is focusing on their Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters" movies and TV shows, allowing new actors to take on a lot of the roles that were featured in the Arrowverse. But hopefully, in a couple of years, the DC Universe may even feature some familiar Arrowverse faces, including Gustin in some capacity.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
