Groundhog Day cast: Where are they now?

Bill Murray (Phil Connors)

Thanks to Saturday Night Live, Caddyshack (1980), Ghostbusters (1984), and Scrooged (1988), Bill Murray was already a huge star when he made Groundhog Day in 1993. Murray starred as TV meteorologist Phil Connors, who wakes up every morning reliving Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, Penn.

In 1998, Murray worked with Wes Anderson for Rushmore, and, soon after, appeared in a string of critically and commercially successful films, like Charlie's Angels (2000), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), and Lost in Translation (2003), the latter for which he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar.

Murray has starred in several more Wes Anderson films, won an Emmy for his role in the 2014 miniseries Olive Kitteridge, and co-wrote and starred in 2015's A Very Murray Christmas. Other credits include voicing Baloo in the live-action The Jungle Book (2016), cameoing as Martin Heiss in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, and reprising his role of Peter Venkman in 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Murray also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Lord Krylar in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023).

Andie MacDowell (Rita Hanson)

After appearing in St. Elmo's Fire (1985) and making a critically acclaimed turn in Steven Soderbergh's Sex, Lies, and Videotape in 1989, Andie MacDowell starred in Groundhog Day as TV news producer Rita Hanson. The film introduced her to mainstream audiences, and in the following year, she starred opposite Hugh Grant in the box-office smash Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994).

In the years since, she's continued to appear in ads for L'Oreal — for which she's been a spokesperson since 1985 — and continued her TV and film work, appearing in Footloose (2011), Magic Mike XXL (2015), Ready or Not (2019), No Man's Land (2021) and the Netflix miniseries Maid, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination playing the mother of her real-life daughter Margaret Qualley's character.

Chris Elliott (Larry)

Comedian Chris Elliott was known mainly for his work on Late Night With David Letterman (earning four Emmys for writing) and Get a Life before appearing in Groundhog Day, where he played cameraman Larry.

He added to his film credits with roles in There's Something About Mary (1998) and Scary Movie 2 (2001). On TV, he starred on Adult Swim's Eagleheart and had recurring roles on Everybody Loves Raymond as Peter MacDougall and How I Met Your Mother as Lily's father. He went on to play Roland Schitt on the Emmy-winning comedy Schitt's Creek, for which he and his costars won a Screen Actors Guild award.

Elliott is also an author, with several spoof books like Into Hot Air and The Shroud of the Thwacker to his name.

Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned Ryerson)

Character actor Stephen Tobolowsky joined Groundhog Day as Ned Ryerson, the annoying insurance salesman who runs into Phil every morning.

Tobolowsky's full filmography includes other memorable roles as Max in Thelma & Louise (1991), Eric in The Insider (1999), and Sandy in Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000). He's also known for his many TV guest spots, with recurring roles on hit shows like Deadwood, Heroes, Glee, Californication, The Mindy Project, and The Goldbergs. Tobolowsky took on a costarring role on Netflix's One Day at a Time.

Michael Shannon (Fred)

Back in 1993, Michael Shannon landed his very first film role as an ecstatic newlywed in Groundhog Day.

From there, his career took off, as he scored parts in movies like Pearl Harbor and Vanilla Sky in 2001, High Crimes and 8 Mile in 2002, and Revolutionary Road in 2008, for which he scored his first Oscar nomination.

His star power rose even further in the 2010s, with big-screen gigs in Take Shelter (2011), Mud (2011), The Iceman (2012), and Man of Steel (2013), and a television role on Boardwalk Empire. He earned a second Oscar nomination for his supporting performance in Nocturnal Animals (2016) and costarred in other acclaimed films like The Shape of Water (2017) and Knives Out (2019). Additional TV roles include Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers and Showtime's George & Tammy.

Shannon also received a Tony nomination for the 2016 Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night.

Brian Doyle-Murray (Buster Green)

Saturday Night Live alum Brian Doyle-Murray has appeared alongside his brother Bill Murray in several films including Groundhog Day, where he played Buster Green, the man in charge of the festival.

After Groundhog Day, Doyle-Murray appeared in Bakersfield P.D. and The George Wendt Show in the mid-'90s, going on to pick up roles in As Good as It Gets (1997), Snow Dogs (2002), and 17 Again (2009).

He's also lent his distinct voice to several shows, most notably voicing Flying Dutchman on SpongeBob SquarePants and Captain K'nuckles on The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.

Angela Paton (Mrs. Lancaster)

Angela Paton played Mrs. Lancaster, the owner of the B&B where Phil is staying.

Her memorable film roles after Groundhog Day included Lolita (1997) and American Wedding (2003). She's also guest-starred on shows like The X-Files, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Medium, and Grey's Anatomy. Paton died in 2016 at the age of 86.

Rick Ducommun (Gus)

Early in his career, Ducommun picked up bit parts as the prison guard in Spaceballs (1984) and a city worker in Die Hard (1988). He also played a barfly named Gus in Groundhog Day.

Ducommun continued to work steadily into the early-2000s, with gigs in Scary Movie (2000), MVP: Most Valuable Primate (2000), and Like Mike (2002), but largely stopped his acting career in 2004. Ducommun died in 2015 due to complications from diabetes.

Rick Overton (Ralph)

Drinking buddy Ralph in Groundhog Day may be one of Rick Overton's most memorable roles, but he's hardly slowed down in the years since the comedy's release.

He appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993); episodes of Married...With Children, Clueless, and Mad About You in the '90s; EDtv (1999); and episodes of Charmed, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and My Wife and Kids in the 2000s. He won an Emmy for writing an episode of Dennis Miller Live in 1996, and took on guest spots on The Office as Pam's father, The Middle, Bones, and Veep. He also had a recurring role on the short-lived Showtime series I'm Dying Up Here.

Robin Duke (Doris the Waitress)

The Murrays weren't the only Saturday Night Live alums to star in Groundhog Day. Robin Duke, who acted and wrote on SNL from 1981 to 1984, played Doris the Waitress.

She continued her big-screen work with Stuart Saves His Family (1995) and Multiplicity (1996), also appearing in episodes of Boston Common and Monk in the '90s and 2000s. She had recurring roles as Wendy on Schitt's Creek and Patti on Man Seeking Woman.

Marita Geraghty (Nancy)

Marita Geraghty scored what is likely her most memorable role as Groundhog Day's Nancy, the excitable townie with whom Murray's character continually flirts.

The Hiding Out star continued her acting career with roles in '90s episodes of Seinfeld, Frasier, Chicago Hope, and 2000s turns on Judging Amy, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Touched by an Angel, but she largely left the entertainment industry in the late-2000s, with her last listed credit being a 2009 episode of The Ex List.

Harold Ramis (Neurologist)

Where there was a Bill Murray role, writer/director Harold Ramis often wasn't far behind. Before Groundhog Day, Ramis wrote Caddyshack and wrote and appeared in Ghostbusters and its sequel with Murray. He went on to write, direct, and make a cameo in Groundhog Day as the neurologist.

Ramis continued to see success as a comic multihyphenate as a writer (Analyze This), actor (Knocked Up), and director (episodes of The Office) until his death due to complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis in 2014.

Willie Garson (Kenny)

After picking up gigs in Troop Beverly Hills (1989), Mobsters (1991), and episodes of Family Ties and Cheers, Garson appeared in Groundhog Day as Phil's assistant Kenny.

From there, he went on to more film success, particularly in Farrelly brothers movies like There's Something About Mary and Fever Pitch (2005). Much of Garson's career was on television, where he played memorable recurring characters such as Stanford on Sex and the City and Mozzie on White Collar.

Garson died in 2021 of pancreatic cancer, at the age of 57.
