The definitive overview of producer Lee Perry's years at the legendary Black Ark, and indispensable even if you're just a casual Perry fan. The first two discs consist primarily of the hits that emerged from Perry's studio (Max Romeo's 'War in a Babylon' and 'One Step Forward,' Junior Murvin's 'Police and Thieves,' et al.), followed by their dub and/or deejay versions, while the third emphasizes rarities, alternate takes and Perry's own quirky but fascinating vocal performances ('Soul Fire,' 'Roast Fish and Corn Bread'). Along the way, the listener encounters one isolated gem after another: 'Don't Blame on I,' an outtake from the Congos' brilliant debut album "Heart of the Congos"; 'In These Times,' Errol Walker's somber reimagining of George Gershwin's 'Summertime'; the simple, charmingly upbeat 'Rasta Train' by Raphael Green (with a little help from Dr. Alimantado); and 'Vibrate On,' a moody, atmospheric melodica piece by Augustus Pablo.

Pure bliss, and includes an informative, photo-packed booklet. Four and a half stars.
