I have been wondering this fo quite a long time, Bens character is really camp and always has been but i just thought that was because of the person playing him but now that they are doing this current storyline i am wondering if he is gay or if all that campness was done on purpose to get to the current storyline up and running.

I was actually thinking this the other day. Since they seem to be running this storyline that he is gay as he writes 'Leon is fit' in his diary next week and then blames it on Louise, I was wondering if Charlie Jones has actually come out in real life. Like some kids do come out at 13 years old and I find it hard to believe that EE would do a story like this if the child isn't actually gay.

He is more camp than Sean Tully so I would guess that yes he is gay.

Charlie Jones (born 23 June 1996) is a young English actor best known for the role of Ben Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

He's been playing the role of Ben since was 9 or 10 years old, I don't imagine that the EE producers at the time were looking for a gay child to play Ben. Thirteen is extremely young, for someone to be sure that they are gay.

I think his character is purposely supposed to be sensitive and soft, remember he shares the same gene pool as Kathy and Ian. I think if EE took the root of having a gay school boy, it would elicit outrage from the viewers and media.

Would making Ben gay, fulfill people with exciting entertainment?

I'm sick of seeing this every single day.

No-one here knows whether Charlie Jones is gay or not, and to be honest none of us should care.

yeah me to, their seems to be a mass obsession with been gay on these forums.

13 years old?, christ my mates and i were all climbing trees at 13 yrs old, we didnt even give thoughts as to whether we were gay or not. Let alone going out intimidating people forming gangs or taking drugs.
Whys society so quick for everyone to grow up now adays?

I know blokes that speak a tad feminine and their happily married and wouldnt look twice at the same sex. I'd hate to be Charlies family reading these forums about their little lad.
I just see a lad on tv trying his hand at acting, good or bad who cares, he'll be replaced if the director doesnt like him. i certainly dont sit there wondering or not whether hes gay, who cares, let him discover his own path when hes had chance to grow up abit. Yukki in Casualty oh hes a fantastic character i must say:rolleyes:, i dont hold it against the guy its the lines hes been told to rehearse im sure hes a lovely confident guy in real life !!!

A better idea for a storyline would be if Ben turned out not to be gay. This would shock the whole country!

I've heard he's actually nothing like Ben in real life and he's quite confident and 'boyish'. Which means he's doing a pretty good job as Ben.

He probably hasn't hit puberty yet since his voice is so high. I'm just saying what everyone is thinking!

hmmm yes ! which is what acting is all about - taking on and playing a completely different character! and quoting the lines your bosses have given you, and acting them out how you've been told to.

EE producers may turn around in 6 yrs times when his voice has broken and shout "Your a thug " act like one, i hope he pulls it off :D

Bless i just feel sorry for the lad he gets so much shit thrown at him on these forums and hes only a baby. Im not a huge Ben fan but i like to see diversity in characters and you certainly get that in albert square. I sometimes get the impression that people just want to watch a load of chelseas/staceys living on one square. life aint like that, we have heathers, shirleys, peggys in real life ! :)

I think when Ben was younger, they wanted the character to be a sensitive type as a contrast to Phil, which led to the Billy Elliot type storyline of the boy who wanted to dance. They've probably seen how the actor does 'camping up' well (I hope the lad was well paid for his Girls Aloud, Lady Gaga and Pretty Woman performances! He must have been ribbed something rotten by his mates in real life) and they keep taking this aspect of his character further.

This could now go in either direction for later in his teens - either him coming out, or remaining a sensitive straight male with a love of the performing arts.

At times I cringe when Ben is on screen, but this 14 year old actor really doesn't deserve the vitriol he receives from some.

Yes, I'm one of them! (Apart from the being married part :D)

I'm quite feminine, and proud to be so. I get asked often if I'm gay, and my mates make jokes about it. I don't care though, I'm confident in my sexuality and I absolutely love women! :D

Glad there are sensible people on this thread! The people obsessed with Ben's sexuality need a serious lesson on the difference between being gay and being camp/effeminate/ whatever you want to call it. The two don't have to go together.

Would they be as happy to discuss the sexual preferences of a 13 year old girl?

No all gay men/boys are camp either, so that generalisation should be thrown straight out, and not all camp men/boys are gay either.
I do find it wierd people seemed to be obessesed with Charlie's sexuality on here.

I don't care whether the actor is gay and 14 is very young,
Looking back at myself at that age, it is now obvious I was gay but I was up in arms if it was mentioned....

I DO wonder how EE cast the part, whether this has always been the intention and HOW they broach the subject with the kid and his family.

There are very few kids at that age that would be open to showing themself like this. Adult actors who play gay have problems from "fans" yet alone a kid who is doing his own growing up on and OFF screen.

I think the storyline is good, brave and I want to see how it pans out. So many gay storylines in soaps are about older people, who suddenly decide they are gay when they meet someone of the same sexdand are normally in another hetrosexual relationship....todd/tony/syed/della/ sonia etc etc gay love triangle is a soap fave really...
