  of course, i had a blast watching this movie, and here are some reasons: 

  1. it has ivan mykolaichuk
  2. it has the most iconic slap in the face (father & son scene)
  3. it has really gorgeous humor 

  the actress who played one of the three chorus girls said at the screening that moscow forced the director to cut out a lot of scenes because the film was too ukrainian for them. when the director re-edited the movie & brought it to the censors one more time, moscow stated that the film still had a "nationalist spirit.” the director replied that he could cut out many things, but "it is impossible to cut out the film’s spirit" ❤️‍🩹

  The director's new to me, but this strain of Ukraine folk-surrealism is already familiar and well-loved. Think "The Eve Of Ivan Kupalo," but played for comedy. Magical-realist tall-tales: "I was on my way to visit the Czarina, but I got drunk and sold my soul to the devil instead, and then..." If you can imagine a 1930s children's book called The Five Doofus Cossacks, probably illustrated by Maud and Misha Petersham, you can almost vaguely imagine how delightful this will be.

  Неочікуванно добре. Дивився його на екзамені в Карпенка і прям здивувався. Писав на це рецензію там же. І для мене це фільм про конструювання владою образів. Образу себе, образу громадянана, героя, країни і тд. Проте це конструювання створює образ влади, тому що її насправді немає, а є лише її репрезентація. 
  Знову всі сильні героїні жінки - відьми. 
  Ще класна екранізація шляху героя кемпбелла
  І я прям охуїв від того наскільки він розуміється в дискурсі нової французької хвилі. Цікаво чи Івченко все бачив, чи це така ізоляційна перлина.

  Surreal and absurd imagery, folk songs combined with comedy... Ukrainian Poetic Cinema at its best! Fully understanding it might be too much to ask but the vision of hell makes the film already worth seeing. "Tale" comes alive so strongly that the film could be considered as definition of what tale in cinema means/should mean. Magical, mysterious and most of all hilarious!

  ця картина простіша, мені здається, до розуміння і виокремлення шарів змісту, аніж інші поетичні фільми періоду радянської окупації, проте це не робить її менш вартісною, ба навіть навпаки, вона майстерно працює з масовим глядачем, кодуючи глибину і важливість тем у прості форми та пречудовий гумор. після перегляду дуже захотілось почитати Гоголя, саме раннього, до того, як він спіймав шизу і взяв ґендер русні. сюреалізм, бароковість такого ніби простого фільму вражають. мені дуже подобається в українській мові слово "химерний", це саме воно. 

  наприкінці додам очевидностей, Миколайчук – людина-титан, людина-велич. дякую йому за те, що він такий у нас був.

  I rarely do this, but I'm not assigning this movie a rating because it was beyond inaccessible to me due to knowing nothing about its context and what have to be the worst subtitles of all time. "You got a gorilla on your mind. But I have a diploma." I honestly believe there's a real chance the subtitles were written by someone who claimed they knew Ukrainian and did not. Even the Apostles Creed, which I'm quite familiar with, was so terribly butchered that it would be difficult to recognize without that familiarity.

  It's not fair to the movie for me to rate it, but I did not enjoy this one bit.

  Вмикав простіньку комедію, а отримав містичний артхаус із алкотріпом та бєсовщиною.
  Відчувається як можливість глянути через шпарину на те, що за інших історичних обставин могло бути українським аналогом вестернів чи самурайського кіно. Заслуговує на помітне місце в культурному каноні. Операторська работа у характерному, чудовому стилі.

  А головне: ще одне нагадування що всі жінки відьми

  Дюнкерк - багато. Марсіянин - багато. Паразити - багато. Титинік - багато. Джанго - багато. Початок - багато.
  - Пропалу грамоту дивитись не будемо. Вовк із Волл-стріт.
  - А мо подивимось трішечки?
  - Нема сили відмовитись. Трішечки. Але епізод про корчму шість раз. Ну десять... раз.
  - І ще епізод про коня.
