Lore[]

In the heart of Oldegård, young Abella found solace amidst the loving embrace of her kin—a sanctuary punctuated by the joys and innocence of a serene upbringing. With the mantle of eldest siblinghood upon her, a fervent desire to shield and support her loved ones burgeoned within her. Though the call of war beckoned, her tender age thwarted her ambitions. Unfazed, she veered towards the realm of engineering, intent on mastering the intricate dance of mechanics and electronics. As the years flowed, the shadows of war drew close, ensnaring those dear to her. The sting of powerlessness gnawed at Abella, even as her prowess in engineering soared. One fateful eve, destiny unveiled an enigma—a wounded stranger, gasping, a gunshot branding his abdomen. A search revealed his allegiance to the Kingdom of Rondon. Abella stood at crossroads: to deliver him to Oldegård's guardians for a bounty of 9 shillings and a fortuitous coin or nurse him back to vitality, receiving in gratitude his officer's blade. Regardless of her choice, the clandestine realm of "Nameless Liberty Underground", abbreviated as NIL, beckoned. Should she choose the latter, the wounded man's plea would echo: to ferry critical parchments to Rondon's heart. An encounter with a NIL emissary, coupled with discourses on Eastern Europa's shifting sands, culminated in an invitation—to lend her engineering genius to a cause running thin on comrades.

With allegiance sworn, Abella became NIL's cornerstone, crafting arms and snares. Yet, whispers of grander machinations emerged. The Eastern Union, amidst the landscapes of Bohemia, brewed a storm—both Prehevil and the Bremenites, covetous and relentless, sought its essence.

As Bremen's might overshadowed Bohemia, NIL's agents, dispatched to its heart, vanished into silence. Compelled by a mix of duty and intrigue, Abella's gaze turned to Prehevil, armed with a singular clue: the crimson shoes of NIL's Bohemian chief. Yet, the cosmos wove a grander tale—under the gaze of the beguiling Moon deity, Rher, Abella's fate intertwined with the epic of the 14 Termina gladiators...

Traits[]

Abella is capable of wielding two-handed weapons and guns. She starts equipped with a Pipe wrench and Sturdy overalls, and, if selected as a starter character, will have by default a knife in her inventory.

If not the main character, she can join permanently on Day 1, far quicker than any other human character, and with two learned skills: the first one, Wrench Toss, a battle ability that remains relevant through the entire game as a semi-reliable non-magic stun, and Short Circuit, which allows her to unlock electronic locks for the player when the opportunity arises. Recruiting her early is a good way to have backup for the fights ahead, as well as having easier access to some areas of the bunkers.

Location and recruitment[]

Abella is one of the earliest recruitable characters: she can be found on on Day 1 Morning. Once the player has opened the hatch in the forest close to the starting area (which leads to the bunker), Abella will approach and offer to join up with the player. Note that if you already have a party of four because of Necromancy, Abella will not make the offer to join, nor will she offer again if you return with a smaller party. If you do have a full party, make sure you return to the train to drop off someone and enter the hatch with a party of three or fewer.

Recruiting Abella will lead to Henryk disappearing from the Mayor's Manor on Day 1 Morning. Alternatively, helping Henryk first will make Abella disappear and mutate into an enemy. The choice seems to be made upon either opening the hatch or entering the manor.

Moonscorched[]

Through moonscorch, Abella becomes the Chaugnar, a elephant-like creature with impressive muscle mass, rock-solid skin and a mutated head that makes one wonder if she was ever a human to begin with. As her head tissue looks especially alien-esque, there is a possibility her transformation could have started from the head or an outside organism could have attached itself to her face (as Abella herself had to wander through the Maiden Woods to reach Tunnel 7, she could have possibly been attacked by a similar parasite to the one that has attached itself to the Woodsman).

This terrifying foe can be found stalking the hallways of Tunnel 7, the bunker area. Loud bangs and noises will be the cue for her presence before she barrels down a hallway to chase after the player. If the player is caught by her while wandering through the derelict area, be prepared for a tough encounter. She will reappear if one enters the elevator in Tunnel 7, bursting out of the elevator shortly after the player and chasing them.

If defeated or grabbed by the Chaugnar, the player character will struggle in her grip, trying to get her strong hand away from their face while they are lifted in the air. In the end, it is a fruitless effort, as she crushes the player character's skull in her grip.

If the Chaugnar spawns in Tunnel 7 and the player leaves the area without defeating her, she may not reappear until Night of Day 3. At that point, the monster may be encountered in Tunnel 6.

Strategy[]

Being one of the moonscorched contestants, Chaugnar is one of the most difficult of them all. It is best to avoid contact with her as much as possible. One can use a beartrap against her outside of combat. While it won't stop her in place, it will slow down her speed significantly to the point that she will match the player's walking/running speed, allowing the player to use hit and run tactics against her, as without a beartrap she can outrun the player.

The Chaugnar has an ability called Doomsday trumpet that can kill anyone within 2 uses. The first hit damages the player or one of their teammates by around 40 mind. The second hit is an instant kill, exploding the victim's head from the loud noise and pressure it causes. Fortunate enough it seems that her head is easier to hit than the usual humanoid enemy so attacking the head once the battle starts is recommended.

Beware, defeating the Chaugnar in combat on the first level of Tunnel 7 isn't the end of her. She is still very much alive. Going down the elevator in the Tunnels to the level 2 area will make her appear from the elevator (after the player has walked a few meters away from the elevator) and chase you again. However, she retains limb damage from the first fight, making the second encounter a little easier. She still has her Doomsday trumpet attack though, so caution is recommended.

She won't chase the player again once they go through Rher's symbol in the sacrificial circle.

Trivia[]

  • Abella's name is a Spanish variant of Elizabeth and a shorter form of Isabella, which comes from the Hebrew name, Elisheba, which means 'God is my oath'.
  • If the player were to fight Chaugnar in the lower levels of Tunnel 7 as Marcoh their head will never explode and merely continue taking mind damage from her trumpet. With it likely being a bug, this may not work with other characters or under certain conditions.
  • She bears a strong resemblance to Ragnvaldr, but with some differences like gender and hairstyle. This could be because Ragnvaldr might have been used as a base for her character, or she could be a descendant of him. This has yet to be confirmed though.
  • Playing as Abella and speaking to August outside the train at the start will confirm they both come from the same region and provide unique dialogue on August's life story.
  • Henryk comments on her rear and her figure, seemingly having a crush on her based on her physical appearance. It's not too far off because in the Discord poll put up by orange~ on which character should be made available next, Abella came out as number 1 most desired character to be made playable, followed closely behind by Daan. Interestingly, Henryk did poorly in the poll, having the least amount of votes alongside the Salaryman Tanaka and the Journalist Karin Sauer.
  • The person she is looking for is seemingly the girl with the red shoes, as the leader of the Bohemian branch of NIL is wearing red shoes. It is unknown currently if the girl in the dream is tied to NIL, but she might play an important part in the Festival because of everyone having been able to see the same girl in the initial dream in the Workshop.
  • While Abella is in your party, if you kill Olivia on the train, she will restrain you and tie you up in the back of the train. You will struggle against the ropes until the night of Day 3 where the ropes will mysteriously be loosened.
  • Stealing from Abella will give 4 Bolts, 2 Duct Tapes, and 1 Bench Grinder.
  • When playing as Abella, she will start off with a completely different outfit. When getting introduced to the others, Abella will change outfits to check up on the train.
  • Sleeping in the Mayor's Manor on Day 1 as Abella results in a cutscene where Caligura attempts to sexually assault her. This prompts a fight to the death.
  • Abella's moonscorched form, Chaugnar, is named after Chaugnar Faugn, an elephant-like eldritch god created by writer Frank Belknap Long as part of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
    • In the game data files, it is labelled as 'Big Boy'.
  • Until the contemporary newest version of the official game, she is the only character that can save all participants except herself. You can achieve it by playing as Abella and getting Ending A on Day 1 Morning.
  • She is also the only character who can read the notes written in passcodes. However, if the other protagonists attempt to read those notes while she is in their party, Abella will take the note to translate it and says that those notes are illegible. It might imply that she is hiding the answer from the party for a particular subject.
  • Although you can find her doppelganger in the game file, you can not find it in the game as of now.
  • As of this time. Abella is the oldest of the playable female contestants at 27.
