This is the only Giant Sand CD I've heard, so I'm no expert, but I didn't like it. Don't get me wrong, there are some sublime moments here but he/they let themselves down with some rough moments which are hard to understand. I guess you would have to listen to it, but imagine listening to it with a friend, enjoying the good stuff, and then suddenly it goes all guttural on you and your friend turns to you with that funny look? I don't mind accepting that the fault is more with me than Giant Sand, but I don't liker sudden surprises in my music - just keep it even, or more even than this anyway.

I really hope to return and wright a full review of CotU, since it has been a 'life changing' album for me. This, along with 'Ballad of a Thin Line Man', "Swerve" and "Valley of Rain" are some of the most played of all my CDs. So much can be said about Howe Gelb's quirky, creative and satisfying vocal, songwriting, and playing style, as well as the musical company he keeps; his stylings helped spawn the genre "Desert Rock".
I just wanted to point out that I don't think I've ever heard a more amazing tone than that of the guitars on this album. I believe Howe plays through an Octavia type effect and uses a Talk Box (like a Heil type) as well, but certainly gets a much nastier and complex tone than one is used to hearing from Frampton or Walsh.
At the very least, for all electric guitarists, this is a MUST HAVE.

This cd is sheer brilliance; rapturously played, varying from brief bursts of energetic hardcore noise to jazzy flounderings while being at the same time a very traditional album. Insightfilled lyrics, playful as ever. I always get this wonderful, strange feeling of crying with happiness when Howe starts singing about "Good cop Yang and bad cop Yin.. strap on cuffs and take him on in.." And I've recited 'Loretta and the Insect World' aloud dozens of times. Happy sad ?
Their best record, as fine as the rest of them are. But also this is perhaps more of an "acquired" taste than some others so for a soft and spellbinding start you could try "Chore" before entering here. But try something you should or you're missing something unique & wonderful.
