Sir Winston Churchill is the overarching protagonist of the BBC drama Peaky Blinders. He is based on the real life historical figure, unlike his real life counterpart, this version is a highly corrupt official allowing for different crimes such as murder to be committed in the interests of The Crown.

in the first series, he is portrayed by Andy Nyman. In the second series, he is portrayed by Richard McCabe. In the fifth series, he is portrayed Niel Maskell.

History[]

Series 1[]

Winston Churchill first appears in the first episode, meeting Inspector Chester Cambell on a train to discuss his mission to retrieve the stolen guns. Cambell assures him he will locate them, and Churchill warns him that they are not in Belfast, and that any killings committed by Cambell must be properly disposed of, or they will appear in the papers and the guns will effectively be advertised for sale. He later calls Cambell upon learning of a protest led by The Peaky Blinders in which mass burnings of the King took place, and warns Cambell to investigate and provide results. At the end of the series, he meets Cambell on the train again, congratulating him upon finding the guns and mentions that he saw the Prime Minister smiling, which he rarely does unless a political opponent dies.

Series 2[]

Churchill and Cambell collaborate again to assassinate Field Marshal Henry Russell. He allows Cambell to recruit Thomas, even after he openly admits his hatred for him and that when the job is done, he will have him hanged anyway. Thomas then sends a letter to Churchill requesting an Empire export license. He reads this in front of Cambell and other associates, revealing to them that Tommy was a tunneller during WWI, and grants his request. When Tommy manipulates events so that he will not be arrested or executed after the assassination, Cambell hires three Ulster volunteers to kill him. However, one of the volunteers betrays his comrades, and reveals to Tommy that at some point in the near future, Winston Churchill will want to speak to him in person, as he has a job for him.

Series 3[]

Churchill is not seen in series 3, but is mentioned in the first episode. When Tommy meets Tatiana Petrovna, a meeting that is first began via a code name, Tommy tells Petrovna that whoever had contacted him had given the wrong name. Churchill had warned him that anyone who gives the wrong name is a spy from the Soviet Embassy and must be killed, he then refused to continue the meeting with her and demands their agreed upon payment of $10,000

Series 5[]

When Tommy becomes a Socialist MP, Churchill watches him speak in The House Of Commons. In the series finale, Tommy meets him in his office, and the two discuss Tommy’s spying on the socialists, as well as his recent allegiance to Oswald Mosley, a fascist MP. Churchill has learned after enquiring with some of the worst people in Whitehall, that Tommy is not actually allying with Mosley, but spying on him. When asked why, Tommy state she is no longer sure, Churchill then recalls the two’s time in the war, and that he sees the same thing he does: another war growing up around Mosley’s feet, after confirming that Tommy will break the law to stop Mosley, he gives his permission to do what he has to do. As they depart, Churchill considers having dinner with the Shelby family one day, as they sound interesting.
