John Waite who had some success as a solo artist in the mid 80's got together with some of his former band mates (who had joined Journey) to create this new band. Their first album had some airplay, but the 2nd one not so much. The problem is that they try too hard to emulate the hair metal bands of that era that were already on the decline. Bad English was a bit late to the party and it shows.
The songs that work better are the ballads for them, but the moment they try going loud it fails.

Highlights: So This is Eden; Straight To your heart; The Time Alone; Pray for Rain; Make Love Last

Bad English had disbanded, and with good reason, by the time Backlash shipped in 1991. The ten-song disc of highly polished songs flatlines from the off with the five-minute "So This Is Eden". The 1989 self-titled debut LP from John Waite and company moved major numbers, while the group's second, and final studio effort, was left for dead upon release. I paid a buck for a used copy of the over-produced Backlash... I should have been paid to remove the lame disc from the previously-owned rack.

JUST PLAIN BAD!

Bad English with second cd " Backlash "; though not quite up to par like there debut album, with this album they to lack energy, its mostly built up of power ballads, but not a bad album a few memorable tunes : So this is eden, time stood still, and pray for rain.4 stars...............

Backlash is the second and last album reflecting Bad English's brief excursion into pop metal and arena rock and, on the strength of this, it's hardly surprising they went no further. Not that this is bad - far from it. The production is flawless, the sound is pitch perfect, the vocals are clean-cut and the guitar solos cut through the ether as if laser-guided. For this genre, the songs are way above the average, alternating between powerful ballads and artificial rock songs which would no doubt be accompanied by much leather-clad posturing and pouting. So what you say, that's exactly what to expect. And you'd be right. And it's something I'm not averse to. So what's wrong?

Well it's too squeaky clean, too perfect. There's no passion, no belief, no real energy. This is a band going through the motions and, seemingly, having no real interest in the finished product. Bearing in mind we're talking blokes who've been round the block a few times. John Waite, Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain (Journey, The Babys, etc.) are hardly new to this game. Maybe boredom has set in. Certainly the liner notes would suggest they knew it was over as both Schon and Waite thank the rest of the band and acknowledge 'The End'. It's a great shame that what should have ended as an almighty bang has ended with a wimpy whimper.

The follow up to the debut album and as always a difficult 2nd album (as it resulted the final album) Not quite on a par with 'Bad English' but this maintained the power balled rock style of the 80s and early 90s. I still play this album today and still enjoy the quality of a much under rated band

If their first record was intereseting as AOR, able to keep your attention with catchy melodies and a few rock punches, all that is gone for the second record.

The type of music and the interpretation is similar, but there is no energy or something to hold on to through the songs. There are too many ballads. I can stand love songs, but there is noting but love songs in this one, so it´s a failed exercise.

Good second album featuring "So This Is Eden", "Time Stood Still", & "Pray For Rain". Not quite as cohesive as the debut, but similar.

Decent material from Schon hampered by Waite's limited range.
