The Avesso whites in the north bank of the Douro river
Published : 05/10/2024 - Categories : Taste Room
The Vinho Verde region is currently one of the largest wine-growing areas in Portugal, so the profile of the wines produced there varies greatly depending on the climatic and soil conditions.
If in the past the region was known for its lightly carbonated white wines, due to the addition of sugar at the end of fermentation in order to lower the acidity of the wines, nowadays the result of several factors, such as the climate changes or the work in the cellar, allows less intervention wines that reflect the profile of the terroir and of the native grape varieties.
In Vinho Verde there are several sub-regions from which completely different and unique wine styles emerge, most are highly influenced by the river that bathes them.
The Monção and Melgaço sub-region, land of the Alvarinhos, bathed by the river Minho and the Lima sub-region, land of the Loureiros, bathed by the Lima River are the ones that most people know.
Baião sub-region is the newcomer, land of the Avessos, it´s also called the Douro Verde because it’s located in the northern bank of the Douro River, land of great reds and the Port Wine.
Baião is the new trend in this vast region of Vinho Verde. Here, the red wines profile is much similar to the elegant wines of the Baixo Corgo in the Douro region and the main white variety is the Avesso.
For years this variety was used in batches along with other white varieties. Nowadays there are a lot of good samples of single-varietal Avesso wines, usually wines with an intense color, open straw, with greenish reflections, a mixed aroma between fruity (orange and peach) and almond (dried fruits) and floral, with the dominant fruity character, delicate, fine, subtle and complex, and fruity flavor, with a slight acidity, fresh, harmonious, full-bodied and persistent.
It’s a versatile variety that allows the aging of batches for the production of sparkling wines but also possible to produce great late harvest wines, from the result of delaying the harvest until the grapes reach the raisin point.
Being a difficult variety in the vineyard, when well worked in the vineyard and in the cellar, the result is great wines for immediate consumption but also with a good ageing capacity.
If you are a fan of white wines from the Vinho Verde region, then come and try something different from a sub-region highly influenced by the Douro River.
