Deep Purple – Phoenix Rising

Really excellent package
The concert and documentary are first rate.
The encoding and mastering are excellent.

The CD is 70 minutes of highlights from Long Beach 76 (2009 master) and Tokyo 75 (the 2001 remix with Tommy Bolin’s guitar higher in the mix)
Both of those are out of print and increasingly expensive.
Given how cheaply this set is selling at time of writing you could say it’s worth it just for the cd
I think the 8 tracks are really well chosen to show what this line up was all about.
Gettin’ tighter (tokyo) absolutely floored me the first time I heard it . Tommy is loud, upfront and wailing like a demon. When Glenn screams Tommy plays the note back to him with the same intonation like a human voice.
The other highlight for me was the Lazy-Drum solo-Homeward strut section.

They attack Lazy like jazz guys and Tommy briefly plays some zippy lines reminiscent of his work on Spectrum.

During Stormbringer they ad lib a bit of Sly Stone’s thank you

I’m on my second unplayable copy of this release what on earth is going on?

Although there is a clip of the legendary California jam 74 performance in the documentary to illustrate the trajectory of Mk3, the compilation is tracks from Tokyo 75 and Long Beach 76
Don’t buy this if you just want to see Richie’s epic guitar carnage

this was a great release about 5 years ago of a great live show in long beach ca at the very tail end of the deep purple mark 4 line up, the band would split up within 5 weeks of this gig, regardless this is a great live lp remastered to sound its best and this also comes with an awesome dvd with great interviews and vintage 70s mark 4 footage, this is a very well done purple live release like they usually are, not a cheap budget release THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL GERMAN ISSUE.............
